Jodie Foster presents the Oscar® for Writing (Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published) for "Sling Blade" to Billy Bob Thornton, and the Oscar® for Writing (Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen) for "Fargo" to Ethan Coen and Joel Coen at the 69th Academy Awards in 1997. Hosted by Billy Crystal.

1996 was a great year in cinema! Fargo, Jerry Maguire, Trainspotting, Breaking The Waves, Secrets & Lies, Sling Blade, Scream, Lone Star, Independence Day, Bound, etc.

I agree with Fargo, but I think that Hamlet should've won. Trainspotting was also very good, so I'd put that as a close second.

FARGO was an original screenplay. HAMLET and TRAINSPOTTING were not. Branagh didn't spin that script out of thin air.

I don't think it's rude. They're just not a schmoopy couple that shows off in public. They are very modest and authentic. I guess they'd rather kiss at home and not in front of cameras
