Great video, I was wondering the difference in slings, now I know a little more, as soon as my shoulder is better I plan on joining the online comp.

Gotta give props to Ray, he's getting so much better! Channing, I competed with a single strand this week...I feel like I sling at my same speed, I just compensate by leaning into the throw more. I'd be interested to see if you agree once you see it

Great video! Thanks Channing! Slinging is so complex and difficult to be analyzed even for a physicist. There is not a one size fits all sling and it all depends on distance, power, projectile and shooting style

Great video! One thing is that Pepe is from Malaga so mainland Spain not the islands. He makes them in the "Balearic" split pouch style though.

Great video! I also like a heavier sling. They accelerate faster to high speed and give more impact energy. That's cool.

Great videos. Balearic slings are more suited to heavier stones 125 - 175g Tennis ball are awful light for slinging but also safe, so good to have a safe slinging 'range'. 125g hardened clay glandes 'mini usa footballs' are great. Make a mould. Different ammo different sling - 4oz cast steel balls 30mm dia and paracord overlap leather pouch. Target at about 60 paces. I love heavier ammo - but safe places to sling, and find ammo again are rare. A magnet on a string is a great way to pick up the 4oz steel balls, the clay glandes do not roll far.

Having used thinner and lighter slings, I prefer thicker, heavier slings. They just feel better to me for the figure 8 slinging style I use

One thing I noticed with the Balearic sling is that, overall, the shots seemed more consistent in terms of aim point.

You need a heavier projectile for the light sling, your muscle memory is telling you to release too early, and going slower helps you feel out the throw. Theoretically you want the lightest sling possible so that the highest percentage of energy put into the system is in the projectile.

ok. i understand the demonstration. tennis balls are not stones or shot. i can feel the momentum of the heavy projectiles and send them fairly accurately. i don't get that physical feedback from tennis balls and am always less accurate. but, nice demo.

I'm looking to braid a paracord style (found a tutorial here on KZfaq) split pouch with paracord to learn with using rocks (having never used a sling before). Good start? Or better to have it be a "solid pouch"? I want power and accuracy and, preferably, would like to avoid hitting myself in the face. 👍 Looking to make one about 80 cm (me being about 188 cm). Good starter length? Also looked at a double fingerloop (tutorial by the same guy); more or less accuracy/power?

I get way snappier shots with my light sling. Its kevlar string and leather.... I think that you're just used to the heavier slings
@MedievalTrebuchet
@MedievalTrebuchet 2 жыл бұрын
Wait, you are saying that a heavier sling can allow you to throw a tennis ball faster than a lighter sling? I think I am on board but I'm not sure I could explain how that adds up, physics-wise
@riley9107

Momentum will build up as you spin the sling. This increases the speed the ball releases at
@andrewmoore135

Physicist here. Sorry Riley, but that’s really not how it works. Heavy slings are not transferring more momentum to the ammo. It actually requires more energy to get the heavier combination of sling+ammo up to the same speed as the lighter one. People who swear that heavy slings are more powerful are victims of a psychological trick. People believe heavy slings are more powerful because they “feel” more powerful... because they are less efficient and take more work to accelerate the same ammo to the same velocity. Velocity experiments by both Irongoober and Mersa have confirmed what should be obvious at the theoretical level for anyone who has a cursory understanding of Newtonian Physics: for the same input, higher velocities will be achieved with lighter slings because the same energy is used to move less mass.
@MedievalTrebuchet

@@andrewmoore135 you should work on your conversational skills. Your comment is condescending and patronizing ("sorry Riley, that's not how it works (because you are not as smart as me...)") and you all but call Riley an idiot by implying that "it should be obvious" and he "doesn't have a cursory understanding of Newtonian Physics." You come off as an arrogant physicist that nobody would want to be friends with. You could have made the same point without putting yourself on a pedestal and calling the other guy stupid. With that said, I can see your point about how heavier slings "feel" more powerful and would be deceptive. Do you happen to have links to the experiments that Goober or Mersa did?
