Great to see Slingerland coming back. Everyone will be watching to see what DW does with them, very carefully. Such an great American iconic brand.
@Paisteconvert4 жыл бұрын
Good luck with that DW/Slingerland thing. I'm still scratching my head as to how they're going to fit "Slingerland" into their line-up. I don't see them having it as a more expensive line than the Collector series. Will they re-brand the "Classic" or "Jazz" series? 'Course the "Jazz" series seems more in replicating the Gretsch "Round Badge" than anything else. Will they do away with the Performer series in order to have a "Slingerland" brand that's competitively priced with say.... the Classic Maple Ludwigs? Will they rebrand one of their import PDPs? Where will DW place the "new" Slingerland line as far as their recently acquired Gretsch product line? Will I still be waiting on a reply for a simple replacement part for a pedal three years after the inquiry? Is it really in the interest of American drummers to have the USA-manufactured market domination that DW seems to be bent on?

Slingerlands of this era talk back to you, whispering what comes next. I have the '63 Modern Jazz, though with big 16x16 floor tom. It used to fill the high school stage auditorium un miced. I'm using Evans Calftone all around, maybe not as loud, but fine tones all around.

I owned a chrome over wood Slingerland Avante kit in the early 70s. It had three mounted Toms in a triangle pattern. One of the best sounding kits that I ever owned. They sounded like this kit. I now play a Gretsch BroadKaster kit. I hope DW doesn't make them sound like DW. 😎

@Paisteconvert3 жыл бұрын
It's not a "standard" or catalogued Slingerland size and neither is the 16x13...especially in 1963. Most Slingerland kits presented in their catalogues also had 20x14 bass drums. And NO Slingerland rack tom eve sounded that good with the abomination Set-o-Matic tom mount. My first drum kit was 1968 Slinger/Leedys with the 1st gen Set-o-Matic. A resonance-killer if there ever was one! www.vintagedrumguide.com/slingerland_drumsets_1963.html

Here is the story. Plain and Simple Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich made these drums talk with their innovative mind boggling ideas and phrasings. I am also so happy that Gene and Buddy did not resort to the mechanical ROBOT Rock patterns. They had the chops and man they played new innovative patterns every night. Miss you Gene Krupa Miss you Buddy Rich big big time.

The company management were brain dead. Too slow to introduce "magnum" hardware, and the hardware was overkill. The company was floundering so badly that Neil Peart had to bail to Tama. He called the company (early 80's) "headless"

Slingerland was never owned or run by "drummers" as the Slingerlands were business folks, not musicians. So the story goes, Buddy Rich wound up with Slingerlands initially as his Dad was looking for an new kit for "Traps the Wonder Boy" and he first went to Ludwig & Ludwig, but there was no one onsite that could make an endorsement decision. So he and the young Buddy went over to Slingerland and there was no such hesitancy...they signed him up! 'Course Buddy wound up endorsing Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers Fibes and even Trixon at various points in his career. I had Slinger/Leedys back in 1968-72 (initially 20/12/14 and then 20/12/13/14) and really wasn't all that impressed except with the "Shelly Manne" COB snare (same shell as Slingerland sound King). The "Set-o-Matic rack tom holder was crap. You should read the Slingerland book by Rob Cook.
