I appreciate the language you’re using here. So many people when trying to teach use the common buzz words (pull, reach back, explode, rotate etc.) but they aren’t describing how it actually feels to execute it so their words have no meaning and it doesn’t translate well to the learner.

Wow. Such an undertated video. I speak from recent experience in saying this is true. Just went from 300 to 415ft in 1 day just a few weeks ago after I figured out hownto keep my arm lose. All my throws felt powerful but I was only getting just over 300 ft.... them boom, I tried it once to see and I threw 400. Tried again and got a 403. Disc after disc over 400ft... it was like a light bulb had turned on. Immediate distance. "Pull like you're starting a lawn mower" , "rip the disc", "explode out of the power pocket", "pulling in a straight line will increase power"....we have all heard these on the course and on youtube, even from some pros. While these have truths in them, they are rarely taken as they should be and end up hurting new players. But you managed to debunk some of these myths.. Keep up these videos. Break those disc golf myths man. Save people time, injury, and frustration. Great video dude, great job.

I’m the prototypical stocky white boy with no hips. I’ve been doing the “starting the lawnmower” pull through and trying to figure out how to engage my hips. This makes so much sense. It’s not about how many times you try it nor how many times someone explains it. Sometimes it just takes 1 really good explanation to click. This makes soooo much sense!
@slingshotdiscgolf1897
@slingshotdiscgolf1897 3 жыл бұрын
You DONT engage the hips with your hips. You do it with legs (video yet to come but it’s on the way) and your back/abs/left arm. Your hips are merely a swivel for power. The video doesn’t really tell the whole story until you watch all the videos. Also, all the videos still makes up a small percentage of what I have to share. It will take time for me to get all this on KZfaq with decent explanations. Keep grinding! I appreciate the support Alex!

I've been throwing 300 ft for a while now, been playing about a year. I don't practice a lot, and I'm ok with that - it's for fun. But after watching this and changing my mental model of the throw, I went and played a casual round and threw a 413 ft drive. The concept of a loose arm and treating it like a whip is MONEY ! Hats-off for figuring that out.

413 is a bomb! great job. Although this video paints a very small picture of what needs to happen to slingshot at full potential, but it certainly is a good start. As you add the left arm/back/legs you will start whipping it much further. Thank you for using the info and I’m thrilled it helped.

This makes sense! I was standstilling a bit today, and thought about it, that you can break the standstill throw into 4 parts. 1) Rotating slightly forward to get motion, serving the disc a little bit forward 2) reachback 3) getting the disc back into the pocket 4) releasing the disc out of the pocket And i realised, 4 happens AUTOMATICALLY. From now, im gonna focus more on reachback and how i use my hips/legs to get the disc into the pocket, because as i wrote...#4 happens automatically

This video is spot on my friend! As a predominant FH player, I struggled BH for years and would rarely use it - I could never achieve good distance no matter how hard I "pulled" or "threw" the disc or how many videos I watched about the x-step, timing, reach back, weight shift, etc. Then just recently through pure dumb luck while doing some field work, I stumbled upon this same idea of keeping my arm loose like a noodle and letting it whip across my body very similar to what you explain in this video - presto - it worked and felt way more natural! I couldn't believe it - I gained significant distance and actually felt like I wasn't working as hard. I wish someone had explained this to me long ago. Now on the tee pad, I tell myself stuff like "stay loose - turn - don't throw" as a reminder. And...I'll keep watching your videos to improve my form as mine still sucks. Thank you!

This is a great explanation and really helped me. I switched from club golf to disc golf about a year ago. There are so many similarities in the 2 golf games. I am a 5 handicap in club golf. To get any distance in golf, you have to stay relaxed and let the big muscles do the work (legs, abs, etc.). This creates a lag in the golf club head which results in a whip action that greatly increases the club head speed. What he is explaining is actually the same thing. Using this method, you create arm lag and a whipping action which greatly increases release speed. Thanks so much for this video!!!

As someone who usually tops out at about 250-270 feet, and have been playing for about 16 years now, if this is finally the video that makes everything click, I'll climb to the highest mountain and scream my praises for you. Seriously though, I've watch I dunno.....I've lost track......probably hundreds of videos on YT on how to increase distance, proper form, selecting the right discs, etc. Some videos never really click with me mentally, I'll watch it and nothing really seems revolutionary to me. Sometimes I'll watch a video and it'll immediately make me wanna grab my disc bag and head to the nearest course, convinced that what I just saw would finally solve all my problems, only to still find myself still stuck throwing under 300 feet. After watching your video, the first thing that caught my attention was when you were talking about how it's impossible to swing your arm quickly if you keep it firm and locked. I've always felt like that's one thing I have a huge issue with.......my arm always feels tensed up when I throw. I've always had issues with gripping things too tightly, but in my mind I always thought I was supposed to keep a pretty firm grip on the disc all the way up to the release, so I've never really thought about changing this aspect. I definitely don't feel like my arm is loose like a noodle when I'm throwing.....I feel like I have to keep my arm perfectly straight, at least until I draw my arm back. So yeah, that very well could be at the root of my problem, my arm being relatively rigid and tense instead of keeping it loose and trying to whip it. I watch some of these guys throw and it blows my mind how smooth and effortless their deliveries are and they get massive distance. I've always excelled at throwing when it comes to anything from a baseball to a football, even a bowling ball. I've always been able to throw balls far and with velocity, and with disc golf I've NEVER been able to do either! It's always frustrated me and I watch all these videos, and I've put in the time, put in the practice, and I don't throw any farther than when I first started playing almost 2 decades ago. The problem isn't that I haven't put forth the practice and effort......its that I haven't been using proper techniques when practicing so instead I've just been drilling in bad habits for a long time. I almost wish I had a reset button and I could forget all my experiences throwing disc golf and wipe the slate clean, and then watch this video as my introduction to the sport instead of trying to unlearn all my bad habits and techniques. I'm going to try my best to throw in the next day or 2, and I will 100% focus on trying to keep my arm loose. I have a feeling it'll be easier said than done. Maybe I can take a muscle relaxer lol

I think the worst advice I took was starting the lawn mower idea. I understand the hand has to be the tip of the whip, and that the hips drive it, but my arm always wants to take control and start the lawn mower. Maybe I'll try setting the disc on a wall and try to completely relax the arm, not even keep it level with my deltoid, and see if I can noodle the arm and drive it. Good video, thanks.

I was able to add another 50-75 ft on top of the 100 I gained from this video. I use my non throwing hand and hook just one finger under the back of the disc very loosely. As I'm moving my throwing arm forward I use a little resistance with the hooked finger by pulling slightly backward. When the force of your throwing arm becomes greater than the resisting arm it will naturally break free (dont try to let go with the back hand, it will break free on it's own if your holding it right). That exact moment of breaking the rear grip will add more force to your drive and push the disc further. Works for me everytime
@Jason-Moon
@Jason-Moon 3 жыл бұрын
This is great stuff. I'm convinced that when many pros complete their reach back, their wrist is up with the disc tilted up, then they relax their arm completely when they rip and their wrist actually falls naturally in that time to flat as they sling.

But in general the bigger my run up the worse my throw and I know that something is fundamentally wrong with my sequencing and I'm capable of throwing 500+. I had the problem where I would reach back thinking my shoulders came along with it. Nope! I filmed myself and I basically had no power with my first technique. I kept questioning, why the heck was I only throwing 300 max? Then I fixed my shoulder issue and that gave me an extra 75 ft. Then I figured out my grip wasn't the power grip and I broke the 400 ft threshold. Thanks to you I broke 450 with this, along with pushing your left shoulder for the RHBH throw. It really is about technique. I mean Eagle is a scrawny guy but he can throw it 700 ft. That tells me its not about strength either. So thank you again!

Anyways, I love videos like this because I lost SOOO much distance in my drives and finding things I can do with my upper body to add distance is about all I can do. Great video. I've recently been pondering how the pros can all easily throw over 400' without much apparent effort. Speed guns show their release speed is well over 70mph. So the question is how do you get your hand to be moving that fast at the moment you release the disc? And it shouldn't be super hard, but rather a fluid motion. I think a whip or slingshot is a good analogy because the idea is that the motion starts out slow but is accelerating the whole time until the point of release. Tristan Tanner is the poster child for a slow X-step that accelerates smoothly to the point of release. If you focus on "pulling", chances are your hand is moving the fastest as it approaches the pocket but then actually slows down after that point when instead it should be speeding up like the tip of a whip. When I look at guys like Simon when he's throwing at his 70% effort level I realize that trying to throw harder isn't the answer. One of my mantras is "let the disc do the work"-- try to give it lots of spin and snap rather than trying to throw it "hard", and what do you know, it goes farther!. Danny Lindahl's "slow is smooth and smooth is fast" isn't quite right. I think it really is more like, "accelerate smoothly and fluidly like a whip, and your release point will have maximum speed".

For sure an excellent explanation that I've needed. It's clear the big drives don't need big muscles as many of the pros look nothing like body builders. With great power comes great responsibility though, and so the work on accuracy begins. Thanks

5:35 "You are gonna use your abs..." I watched this video and slowly went through the motions in my living room before heading out for some field work and to play 18 yesterday. When I woke up this morning, I couldn't roll out of bed because my abs were so sore from working on including what I learned. Maybe that means that I'm doing it right. Thanks for the videos. I'm only a couple months into playing disc golf, but you have definitely helped me refine my form.

Reciprocating Dingle Arm. The "power pocket or sling shot pocket" angle or position will vary by player and speed which is why I just say the disc comes inward or narrow to your center then redirected back out wide away from center. The faster you turn, the more the shoulder angle collapses, but you are resisting the collapse to create a bounce or sling effect. But many players try to spin too fast and collapse the shoulder joint completely with the upper arm hugging the chest and can't redirect the disc from their center and then has to go around it/rounding.

Up until this video, I've always wondered why forehand shots are considered the weaker or less desired throw since for me I can throw both about the same distance and typically get more accuracy with a forehand. This video makes that clear since it doesn't seem like you would get the same slingshot momentum from a forehand. I also find it interesting that so many people commenting are maxing out around 300 ft before adopting this technique because that's pretty much the average max distance I've been stuck at, regardless if I'm throwing a mid or distance driver.

I like to ask new players to drop their discs, stick their off hand in their pant pocket, and then just turn their upper body around, letting the throwing arm hang relaxed and heavy, to help them feel the acceleration the rest of the body puts on it, and hopefully wake them up to how little the arm really needs involving.

You are explaining proximal to distal throwing techinque applied to disc golf very well. Hips go first and upper trunk rotation happens later. Elbow doesn't work the same way in backhand than in throwing a ball or forehand which are more typical examples of throwing mecahnics. Explaning the elbow as a whip is a very good idea.

This is excellent! And shows how a 10 year-old kid with true noodle arms can outthrow the 250lb bodybuilder with giant arms. Your arm IS a whip, let it happen. Core strength is key, the faster you rotate your hips the faster your noodle arm whips the disc. My and my noodle arm are going to go throw some discs now.

Okay, revolutionary. Watched dozens of videos, and none explained the loose-arm technique as you have. Very nice. I didn't get an extra 100 feet, but in one day went from regular max of 310 to 330 to one of 350 to 380. My goal is 400, which is a long way for a 54 year old, in my book.Thought I would never really get past 350, but you have renewed my hope for 400. While the whip concept is very helpful, I had heard it before, but never quite understood it. Your talking about the arm being a noodle, and dead weight, was super helpful. Another idea is to talk about the fact that you are not THROWING the disc, but FLINGING it, helps create the mental shift one is after. Not muscling it, but using the body rotation to catapault it. Even my wife is catching on, and super excited about her new distance!

This makes so much sense. I’m going out on the field tomorrow to practice this and hopefully see the improvements. One thing I wanted to know is that once you are tucked into the Slingshot Pocket, is it then time to manually swing your disc arm out or does your arm naturally keep noodling out from the rotation? Also I think one of the main reasons that us beginners/intermediate players have only just started to understand this Noodle Arm/Passive Arm method is that we were always taught to Pull a lawnmower ripcord or Bash down a door with our elbow and to me I visualize Pulling my disc arm across my body with brute force to achieve those things. Thanks
