deirdre I know, right? I think there's a way to change the sounds, although it can damage the system a bit. Then, you could take an old sound or make your own awesome sound and use it instead.

Fiber Silkington They disabled changing startup sounds in 7 unless you want to mess around with dll files and even then it's not totally guaranteed to work.

Fiber Silkington well i actually changed the start up and shut down sound in my windows 7 machine (plus i gave it a classic look, vaporwave themed) and it doesn't damage the system as far as i can tell. Also , it was pretty damn easy to convert the win 95 shut down and start up sounds in another form so you can use them for the users login and shut down sounds.

You can actually tell not even the companies and people involved in making these products feel that way anymore. The 90s and early 2000s were full of these "holy shit, the future" jingles and sounds, and now it's all just a ding or beep, and advertisements are often just regular radio music.

I love how mystical the startup chimes of the mid-to-late 90s sounded. It's a shame that OS design has trended so much towards minimalism that startup/shutdown chimes barely exist anymore.

The whistler and longhorn is fake sound. Most builds use XP sounds. Whistler used 2000 sounds until 2481. Longhorn used XP sounds until later on in Post-reset.

Yeah, and not even four months ago did I upgrade to a better computer, went from xp to Windows 8. Big jump for me. In my opinion, xp was, and still Is, the best os so far, and it took them 6 years to come up with a new os that just had a search bar XD but still, xp is the best for graphic designing, movie making, or video editing. So, I'd agree with you on that one.

Hearing the starting sounds of Windows 95 and 98 was often the best thing during the day, similar to the sound of my Playstation booting up. Those sounds meant that school was over and I could kick back and play some Diablo, Counterstrike or Need for Speed.

I'm only 13 years old, but this video makes me feel old between the Windows 95 (first computer at home), Windows 2000 (computers of school), Windows Xp (my old pc), Windows Seven (my actual PC) and Windows 8 (my friends' PC). All that sounds are a part of my life. And I like Brian Eno so Microsoft Sound is part of my life too.

Florian Decros i'm 13 too but i had a laptop with XP then a computer with vista and a netbook (mini notebook) with 7 but it was slow so i continued to use my dad's pc (laptop but connected to a monitor) with vista (he has still vista on the laptop) then i bought my actual laptop with windows 8.1 (now updated to 10) oh and at school all computers now have windows 7 on EDIT: My dad's laptop now has linux(but who cares, we are talking about winodws)

@@transam33o Sorry for seeing this just now, but some of the cancelled versions were Beta versions that were probably going to be used in the original versions that were coming out, or as a test version to see if it'll work. But they probably got cancelled due to some bugs, errors, not coming in handy anymore or something else. Couple of examples: - April 1985 Windows 1.0 Beta was scrapped, but later became the framework of the first version of Windows. - 1996 February 29- Cairo (a "true object-oriented OS") planned after Windows NT 4.0 and had the same primary and secondary version numbers. - 1999 December 27- Windows Neptune, the first planned version of Microsoft Windows NT to have a consumer edition variant, based on the Windows 2000 codebase. A version was sent out to testers but was never released. - 2000 January 13- Windows Odyssey, a version intended to be an update to the Microsoft Windows NT 5.x codebase. The teams working on Neptune and Odyssey combined to work on the Whistler project,later released as Windows XP. - 2005 February 28 - Windows Longhorn cancelled and became Windows Vista in Fall 2006. - 2009 October 26 - Windows 7 Workstation editions cancelled.

my graphic design class in high school had old windows 98 laptops so that chime would come on every 4 or 5 seconds when someone opened up the laptop. It was wonderful just hearing them all. Now its my notifications ringtone on my phone
