About the Original Song
"Slip Slidin' Away" is a 1977 song written and recorded by Paul Simon which appears on his compilation album Greatest Hits, Etc. It was one of two new songs to appear on the album, the other being "Stranded in a Limousine". Backing vocals on the song are provided by The Oak Ridge Boys. The song was originally recorded and considered for Simon's 1975 album, Still Crazy After All These Years, but Simon decided not to include the song on the finished album. A demo version appears on the 2004 re-issue of the album.The song was also included on Negotiations and Love Songs (1988).
Billboard Magazine found the melody to be "catchy" and the lyrics to be "sensitive. thoughtful. melancholic and evocative."
"Slip Slidin' Away" was released as a single in October 1977 and became a major hit, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. The song eventually became a hit at both Simon's solo concerts and Simon & Garfunkel concerts.

Perhaps that understanding is coming. Back when trump first ran for president, then when he won, comments that I made were slammed by some Americans as being none of my business, butt out. That style of thing. I am an expatriate Canadian living in Australia, Tasmania to be exact. Can’t get any further away from the US. But what happens there affects what happens here and particularly affects my relatives in Canada. So when Americans used to say their country was the world leader, the greatest etc, they were sort of right, in a way. Just not how they meant. So I most emphatically hope that future presidential hopefuls, or those vying for any elected office, are subjected to a thorough background check, such as any employee undergoes before being accepted by an employer. Trump should never have been even vaguely within reach of the possibility of launching a campaign, his suitability for the job was non existent. It was obvious to me and others then and was proved subsequently. The idea that anyone can become president was not meant to indicate this low a bar was a possibility

@@jandrews6254 I am a lover of and ally to and member of a "liberal western democracy" as an American. I do not for one minute think that we can wield the influence of empire without accepting that responsibility that comes with electing national leaders who will make decisions that influence the world and especially our allies, without whom we cannot continue, either. It is mutual and we have all done a lot together since WWII when exercising what is known in the diplomatic trade as "soft power," a la the Marshall Plan. We cannot leave our treaties and agreements behind and must do all we can to reform and strengthen alliances like NATO. Democracy is a mess, but it is the best humanity has found as a system of governance thus far. And America is "exceptional" per Alexis de Tocqueville because of how it was formed, without common bonds of ethnicity, religion, national origin, etc., but with adherence to a Constitution that is a philosophy of secular self-governance allowing all to grow from their present estate to hoped for betterment. It was never intended to mean we are special in any other way. We were not formed by adjacent geography or blood ties. It has to be for us all a devotion to principles of level playing fields and the common good. We got way bigger than many of our allies and that requires huge responsibility. We cannot maintain two huge military bases in Australia that help us further our interests and security and not accept that the reciprocation for that is that we provide what Australia may not have enough of if it is ever attacked and strained beyond its ability to provide warriors and materiel. It's human commitment and relationship, but writ large on continental levels.

Boy this comment didn't age well at all. Economy's in the dumpster people can't afford gas to get to work. Even if they do get to work they're struggling to buy food for the table.
