Shows how to make two different slip stitch edges also called chain edges for knitting. I show what I call a twisted chain edge and an open chain edge. This type of edge eliminates the bumps that appear with garter and stockinette patterns.

Was doing a slip stitch edge on a baby blanket. Put it aside for a while and when I started back I realized that one side no longer had the nice edge. I could not remember how I did it in the beginning. Found your video, figured out what I was doing wrong and am back on track. Baby won't notice the 2 inches done wrong! Thanks!

I tested the different techniques you showed, and the slip the first stitch Kwise, Purl the last stitch works best because of the 4 interspersed purled rows. Yay! Thanks for you rhelp.

This video was great! I'm a new knitter and needed clarification on how to slip a stitch- doing a *beautiful* beaded scarf, and the pattern says to slip the first stitch for a more professional, "tailored" look. Your video SHOWS me the difference, which I greatly appreciated. Even more a pleasure is to see the shout-out to my hometown- DEEETROIT!!! The only difference is, as far as I can tell, that she uses the one like your yellow swatch, but she comes up thru the bottom of the last 2, instead of one. I don't know why. @eventingirl001 When working slipped edges you work the edges the same way on every row whether you are on the right side or wrong side. So to make the yellow example you slip the first st of every row as if to purl and knit the last stitch of every row. In between the first and last is your pattern that you work as it states; this is why you'd add 2 sts to a pattern that isn't written for slipped edges. So If your pattern says CO 24 you would CO 26. I hope that answered your question.

@Zephulastar Hi! It doesn't matter what you are doing in the middle. Just always work the chain edges exactly the same for every single row regardless if it begins/ends with knits or purls. This is why you cast on two more sts than the pattern says. As I recall the purl stitches you see are in the middle of my pattern. My example is basically a small square in stockinette st with garter stitch edges.

@j8nnyl A garter stitch border is not nearly as stretchy as seed stitch or ribbing but you should still cast on loosely since a long tail cast on doesn't have as much stretch as knit stitches. Hope I haven't confused you!

@MamaPalma Yes, if your pattern doesn't already have a slip stitch edge worked in either by telling you how to work the edges in the directions or written into the pattern, then you will want to add 2 stitches to what ever your pattern says to cast on. So if your pattern says "cast on 25 stitches" and doesn't say anything about how to work the edge sts either in the directions or written into each row then you would cast on 27 stitches (25+2). Work the 1st edge st then pattern row then last st.

Hi Marlene, Great video. I have a question, I am doing a double moss pattern, can i still slip 1st knitwise and purl last stitch with every row? Sometimes the second stitch ( after slip stitch) is a knit stitch and sometimes it is a purl stitch, the same with the end, sometimes the stitch before the last stitch (before purl last stitch) is a knit and sometimes it is a purl stitch. will it make a difference? In your video all your stitches are knitting between the slip stitches. Thank you

Thank you so much for this video--the best on KZfaq!! My question is: Will this edge be appropriate to knit applied i-cord to? I started my blanket this way because I thought it would be easier to see the bigger stitches to pick up for the i-cord. It's hard for me to see where to pick up the stitches when there is a "bump" so I thought this edge would be great for adding an i-cord. Am I right?
@MarleneD1216
@MarleneD1216 9 жыл бұрын
bett3242 An applied I-cord is a method of binding off. I have not noticed any deformity using this side method when it comes to binding off with either a traditional bind off or sewn bind off. I have not personally used an I-cord bind off. You could do a quick swatch with an I-cord BO before you get to the end and see if you like the results before getting too much further.

@andreww661 Are you getting bumps? Double check to see that you are moving your yarn to the correct position. Since this video shows several ways of making the chain edge I'm not sure how to elaborate on yarn positions. If you accidentally knit an end stitch when you should have purled it, this too will create a bump on the edge instead of the chain. You may see a very small bump on the first row after you turn from the cast on; I pull the tail out of that and weave it when done.

Now to decide if i should rip out the 12 rows of a baby blanket i started, to chain the edges.... ;o) baby is due in 6 weeks, Ack, forget it - maybe i will rip it out and make a seed stitch border instead of the existing garter border, wdyt? Thanks for the awesome video in any case, it is great info. I hope i can start to remember to always do a slip st border from now on.

@tamaraskilton Hi Tamara... I sent you a video link. And YES, if the huge loop you're getting is where the tail of your yarn is it's fine... that happens. Just try to keep it all together until you're able to knit the next row and it will kind of fix itself. You can tug on the tail end to snug up that loose stitch. Another note is that is the slip stitch spans 2 rows when it's done so yep, it can look a bit longer, but shouldn't be a big loop - that happens just on the cast on.

@MarleneD1216 13 жыл бұрын

Hi Marlene. This is great, thanks! I'm making a mitered square wrap and love the chain edge for ease of picking up stitches. There are a few rows where you purl on the wrong side to create a few stockinette rows for variety. Do you just use the same technique for those (I'm doing the middle one, Sl 1st ST purlwise, K last ST) or do you have to reverse it somehow when the edge isn't in garter? Thanks!

What about the return rows? I didn't hear any mention of those, and they would certainly affect the outcome. Do you garter the edges, slip the first stitch, or repeat the instruction that you used on the front? It isn't much use to know any of these 3 methods if you can use them on only one row, and don't know how to return. Otherwise, this was very clear.

So you're basically adding 2 stitches to a pattern for the slip st and purl at the end or you just change what the pattern calls for for the 1st and last sts of a row? It seems like it would throw the pattern off.
@MarleneD1216
@MarleneD1216 9 жыл бұрын
Yes. Cast on 2 stitches more than the pattern calls for. The edge stitches are elongated so it really doesn't add much width. I wouldn't change a pattern that needs to be very specific to the gauge without testing it first. You could knit a small swatch without adding 2 and turning like normal and another small swatch where you add two stitches and slip stitch the edges to see the width difference between the two.

+Marlene Desert So when you say "exactly" does that mean I slip the first stitch KNITWISE on a purl row - that would be exactly the same. And what about the last stitch, if I'm doing exactly the same as the knit row, I would not change the last stitch because that's already a purl - correct?
@MarleneD1216
@MarleneD1216 8 жыл бұрын
+Julia French For each row regardless if it is the knit side or purl side, the right side or wrong side or if the row starts/end with a knit or a purl, you slip the first stitch knitwise and purl the last. I show 3 different ways to get the chain edge (you can see them written in the opening 'scene'). For each way to create the chain edge you do exactly the same on each row regardless if it is the front/back knit or purl. I personally prefer slip the first knitwise and purl the last; I knit continental and find it the smoothest. By my recall the outcome of each is nearly the same. I haven't watched my own video in a LONG time :)
