what size crochet hook do you use ? beautiful work
@Yarniversity4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Barbara! I don’t remember what size hook we used, but generally it would be the same size hook as we used for the squares (same mm size of the squares were knitted) or maybe one size smaller.

I love this demonstration. Q: what size crochet hook should I use with thick yarn?
@CynthiaHyslop4 жыл бұрын
Usually your yarn will come with some recommendations on the ball band. If the recommendations are for knitting needles sizes, I generally use the same size hook. But the best way to tell is to crochet a swatch and see what kind of fabric you're getting. Then you can use a larger or smaller hook depending on what kind of project/fabric you'd like to make.

@@CynthiaHyslop Kia ora Cynthia..thank you so much for getting back to me all the way in New Zealand. Hope you are all keeping safe and well. My blanket squares edges/ tops and bottom rows not as neat as yours so I am still working out whether the crochet or the slip seam is a better way. I will let you know how I get on xxx

can you do a video of how to sew them together if theyre different sizes???
@CynthiaHyslop4 жыл бұрын
Oops, sorry Kiarra, I didn't see your comment earlier. If they're different sizes, it becomes tricky to sew them together without puckering on one side. If you're making a blanket, as we were doing here, I'd suggest putting a border around the smaller square to make it the same size before sewing them together.

Hi Carmen, sorry about the delay in posting a reply. We did post a link to the pattern further down in the comment section but I should have put it here also (a long time ago!) The pattern is by Rowan: Martin Storey Pure Wool Superwash Worsted Knit Along 2016: www.knitrowan.com/designs-and-patterns/online-collections/martin-storey-pure-wool-superwash-worsted-knit-along-2016. Rowan produced a lot of videos to support this project and you can find them here: www.knitrowan.com/designs-and-patterns/patterns/martin-storey-kal-2016-final-making-up

CM K Hello and thank you! The blanket is the first Martin Storey KAL project. If you visit knitrowan.com and search for Martin or look for his KALs, you should find it. You’ll need to join the Rowan page and the pattern is free for members.

Both yes Cynthia. i tried to keep them the same size but it just didnt happen
@CynthiaHyslop6 жыл бұрын
Okay. You could try blocking the squares to try and get them to conform to a similar size. Or, you could try knitting/crocheting a border around them to make the smaller ones bigger. You can sew them together in a kind of "jigsaw" look but you'd likely need to knit/crochet some "filler" pieces. I'd recommend blocking first.

Such an interesting pattern - is it your original or can I find it someplace?

Hi Aileen, it is a Rowan pattern and you can definitely find it. Scroll down just a little to read the comment under Carolyn Wright. You'll find a link to the pattern and Rowan has great video support as well. Happy knitting!

When you start to join the squares together how do you fasten the beginning so that it doesn't come undone. I hope it makes sense.
@CynthiaHyslop2 жыл бұрын
Hi Cathy, so sorry about the delay in replying. It's usually not a problem in the beginning if you leave a long enough tail. About 6 inches of tail should be good. If it's being troublesome, you can weave in the tail first and then use it, anchored, to begin the slip stitches.

I just wanted to check with you lovely ladies as I am knitting Martin Storey's Bountree pattern from Simple Shapes Cotton Glacé. I am at the part where he asks to "Slip stitch button band in place." The button band is done in moss stitch & will be stitched onto the garter stitch fronts. Will this stitch you've described beautifully work well on the wrong sides of this project for me?
@CynthiaHyslop7 жыл бұрын
Hi Maggie.I think this method works brilliantly for all kinds of seaming, including buttonbands. It's such a neat technique that you can use it on the right side or the wrong side. But the best answer of course, is to tell you to just try it. If you don't like it it's very easy to remove it and try again. We'd love to see a picture of your finished garment.

Hmmm... that's interesting! We'll try to work on one like that. (We'll have to see if we can get Barb to work on a project with squares of different sizes!) You must be in the middle of something like this? Are they different widths as well as lengths?
@suemauer59656 жыл бұрын
I'm assembling a 12-square knitted afghan, and there is a lot of variation in stitch count on the squares. I am using an i-cord join which requires picking up stitches before knitting the join. I am compensating for the variation by skipping stitches along the longer edges. The locking stitch markers help immensely - I put them in evenly spaced so it is not too hard to see where to skip. This would work the same on a crocheted join. Feel free to share this suggestion if you want.
