Greetings Liz and Mike! Thank you for not getting between the building and bank. The ground is going to need much drainage before your done, never seen a hill that was saturated around here like you kids are dealing with? Most likely the weep hole is a pressure relief valve for when you dead head the pump. Be safe around the unstable earth you are dealing with. Was on a job site many years when a bank caved and killed a laborer.

Dude, I feel for you guys. You should have a raffle. Just raffle anything to get money for the retaining wall. I know it’s going to cost a lot of money. Good luck. Jim in Round Lake Beach, Illinois. I hope the grass seed helps. Make key chains or bracelets anything. No more negative comments from me. Just helpful suggestions.

Hey Mike and Liz- have you considered getting some Hesco Bastion- they are large wire cages that have filter fabric in them and you fill with rock. We build military defensives with them and they are heavy solid for a retaining wall. I would think with a bit of looking you could find them at a reasonable price a government auctions or surplus. Not super pretty but you could back fill the tops with solid and plant. I feel for you that bank needs to move and be supported

No matter how far back you take it back it will still be a mud slide. You have free timber. Cut it back and build a fre wall out of large timber . If youcan place large rock between the mud and wall. This will be your filter.

I don't know how far you can move that road back at the top of the hill, but I think that moving it way back and stair stepping the slope down gradually is your best and safest alternative to doing this yourself at this point. Take care and good luck.

Mate, you need to dig out the bank along the side of the building wide enough to get your tractor along it ,then taper the bank back on about a 45degree angle, then put a road round the top.

Double-check the filter housing, it looks like the arrow is pointing to the tank instead of toward the nozzle, which could cause back pressure and leaks at that port, or not!

Good catch. I also noticed that. Seems the arrow should be pointing in the direction of the flow of fuel. The inlet to the pump is in from the tank.

Just have to say: 1) take the tape off of the pipe and get it out of the diesel tank. Diesel will degrade the tape. 2) listen to Kevin Casey’s comment, and start from in front of the Subaru and excavate 2x the excavator width all the way along the side to the back of the house. In other words, the whole place you put the grass seed has to go. Then slope a bit. Pile the dirt by the Subaru to make a new road access. And over the side.

Wow guys that mud problem you have sucks. There is common Bermuda grass also called Cynodon dactylon which has 8 foot roots , that should surely hold that mud. As one viewer noted you need to lessen the slope angle. Also, hope you are saving the ashes from your wood stove for the garden. You can also help the soil by burning that pile of branches in the garden area before you plant naturally. Love the videos, stay well and safe.

Mike, you need a much less acute angle on the ledge above your shop. If you can take your excavator and slope it back to at least a 30 degree angle, it would keep the dirt from sloughing off the hill above. Then you could plant some low growing ground vegetation to anchor it down. You should also cut a drainage ditch below your top cut close to the hillside.

Mike, all of us are pulling for you guys, but myself and so many people are saying and it doesn't appear to be sinking in, until you get a 2:1 slope or 30 degrees as others say, you will continue to have this problem. Your not done excavating, the grass seed you just put out you might as well have put in the garbage bud. You have the equipment now, 90 degrees to the building so you don't dislodge chunks, scrape up at a 2:1 angle which is 27 degrees, anything that or less steep will solve your problem. 2:1 on the mountain is not achievable the whole way but it is if you terrace. Wait for a better day, excavate once correctly then stabilize with seed or what ever.

A logical grade for good grass growth should not be larger than 50 degree angle. You're looking at a complete cut out and a bridge to keep the road, or an extensive retaining wall.

grass seed takes a long time to root. if your going to waste seed at least use a annual rye grass deed its up in a few days and mass of root system, i would have that fixed up in a day or 2 with the equipment you have, we have weight restrictions on our roads starting April 1st but we can if needed get half loads in, so half of 180,000 Lbs. but like i have said that problem should have never been left like it was.drain tile qand water seal the wall back filled with sand like all basements are done, its like building a home an not putting in drain tile an stone then sand and leaving it open all winter for the frost to bust up the footing. the longer you leave it, the bigger the chance of a chunk the size of a bus brakes off an plows though the wall.. thats what lay do.. sure you cut a ledge on tp all the better to weaken the clay wall

That mountain slope is going to keep giving you problems. Can you drill down in the ground and put poles in to make a solid wall? It is not going to stop breaking off if you don't stop it. The fuel pipe. Your tape will melt when fuel gets on it. You have the right idea. But tape wont do it in my opinion. Always something I realize. Thanks for sharing. Iowa cares. It's rainy here today. 43 degrees. Be safe guys.

look your best bet is to start digging at the back of your garage , dig in about 8or 10 feet before you start digging up the side , after digging back , before digging up the side , dig down 5or 6 feet below the grade of your garage , then as you start digging up the side swing everything into the hole and keep your digging clean, then it gives a place for the dirt to land instead of dragging it upslope , everytime you move take care of the fill before you continue to dig

I never comment on youtube, but I cant help myself. Ideally you would have built your place a bit further away, but what is done is done. Your problem is not so much the steepness of the slope, its the water that is traveling over it/through it. Its not a coincidence that you loose more of the hillside when you get a large rain event. If you can keep that slope dry, you will not have the issues you are currently dealing with. In my opinion, the cheapest, quickest way to solve your problem would to install a french drain at the top of the slope (Ie the shoulder of the road above) to catch any subsurface water traveling down the hillside and direct it somewhere where it wont cause more erosion (somewhere that has well established vegetation with a gentler slope.) The bottom of the trench for the french drain should be aprox .5-1' into the native clay below the topsoil. The subsurface water will travel on this clay layer below the topsoil therefore trenching into the clay is necessary. After you get the french drain installed, I would cover the hillside in plastic(re-enforced visqueen would be best) to protect the slope from being eroded by rainfall until the weather drys up a bit. At that point you can decided on a more permanent solution to retain the soil a bit better. Good luck.

When putting down grass seed add a good layer of straw. It will keep your grass seed moist and also help with erosion. Also use a blend with ryegrass as it will come up very fast. One more thing, pray!

Hey Mike, The adjustable suction tube can also be problematic for air leaks. I suggest replacing with a piece of straight pipe cut to length just short of the bottom of the tank with an angle cut on the bottom to prevent sucking the fuel on the bottom of the tank. This will prevent water from sucking into your filter if you happen to acquire any from source or condensation. I would try it on the old pump first and if the old pump works return the new POS you paid good money for.

With that kind of slope you need a much bigger root system to hold that dirt.i think the best cure for your dirt problem is dig out a road behind your shop then use large rock or those retaining stackable brick 2 -3 high bring the dirt out to the top of the retaining wall leveling another area and stack more rock or brick thus terricing it. I've seen mud slides and I know it's not a cheap route to take but that hill doesn't look good at all

I think your close to the Angle of Repose very little, I believe, will be sluffing off threatening the retaining wall. The notch you cut was the best thing you could have done, a good stand grass maybe some trees later, done. Your work has already been tested with the rain. Huge clean up though. Leaking blow off valve may have relieved excess pressure to protect positive displacement pump. Keep up the great work and Stay Blessed

It may sound like a dumb question, but have ya'll looked into waterproofing that wall to the top of the block, and backfilling it? It would almost seem like a walkout basement on that side, but Mother Nature gets what she wants. I have a feeling you might wake up one morning to a whole bunch of trees on your cars, excavator and tractor if you keep undercutting that bank. you are tossing seed on ground that is already overhanging, that is going to come right down. seems like you need to cut the bank back and lose half the road. 30-40 degrees slope.

i think you will have to move your road back more and take a lot more dirt out. i would take out as wide as the tracks so you can drive all way thru. engineer was wrong it's very unstable. i think that is a relief valve leak. i think the fuel will eat the electric tape up and it will fall to bottom of tank. the pick up that came with my tank slide up and down because all tanks are diff. heights so your pick up may be ok see if it pulls in and out when you replace pump it sucks to have to redo every thing i know i have a pump like yours that you have to tap with hammer to get it to run i think brushes may be bad. good luck ,take care, be safe and well

You might want to research that pump or ask other people that like contractors that uses those because it might be possible that that whole that you were talking about over that port could be something similar to like a pressure release so that your whole pump doesn't build up pressure when you're using it to fill up your excavator or after you get done using it. I have never used one of them but I have but I have been around those tanks sitting on the back of the trucks when I worked in the oil field the oil company that I work for would send them trucks out to fuel up the equipment that we were using like the excavators and dozers and such and I had noticed that on top of the tank there right at the pump area or where the pump is is located there fuel stain around the pump on the tank not just figured it might been some spillage that might have come out of the nozzle when they hung it back up I mean I didn't know so that's why I'm saying that it could be a pressure release to allow some fuel to come out of the pump so that pressure doesn't build up inside the pump like I said you may want to research that cuz those pumps may be designed that away for pressure release

AT TIME STAMP 4:17 it looks like your leak is from the smaller pipe you put in the top. If you look close you can see a small dark stream coming from the pipe down the side to the weep hole. It's a very fine line it's may be a 1/16 of an inch wide stream running down to the weep hole... AND THEN DOUBLE check that you have the pump going the right way. The arrow should be pointing toward the hose. When you were putting it on it looked like the arrow was pointing the wrong way. I couldn't pause the video in the right spot to see... It's looking like if you don't do something with the slope behind the house soon your in danger of loosing your house! What happened to the professional advice you received?

if you dont have professionals do this with the proper retention wall you are just wasting time and more importantly you money, the approach you are using WILL NOT WORK!

In a few videos later (in the future) you try to reconcile with why people that were pushing back on your installation of the pump filter direction...well at 9:41of this video you should clearly see why with your presentation people were confused, me being one of them to be honest. You clearly pointed/referenced the wrong direction of flow dude. Then I saw you addressing that in a future video as if you had no clue why the confusion...seriously, you can't put that together?

Quality isn’t what it used to be….. you would think that would have been bench tested after assembly to know it was good, least wise for $300.00 it should have been….

At least you know that the work you did on the tank was done right. As far as the mud, we’ll you are fighting Mother Nature which we all know can be a nasty mother. Hang in there some day you will look at this and laugh. Until then thanks for sharing.
