As crazy as their video is, this songs is actually quite accessible to a new metal listener, which is what makes it a classic. The vocals are clean and understandable, and the rhythm is dope.

Fun fact: The original song was written to be more bassy, more guttoral, and chunky. It was Rick Rubin that cleaned it up and stripped it down- one of the many reasons Slipknot refuses to ever work with him again.
@dyldog

@@SonOfNonefair enough, everything he touches becomes “stripped back and simple”, I listened to this one Kesha album a while back and was like “this has gotta be a Rick Rubin” and sure enough it was

@@SonOfNone I didnt know about that, thats unfortunate. Its definatly their decision to not work with him again but like or hate the song it was probably way better for slipknots career it came out how it did. Its like the original poster said its where A LOT of new metal listeners start, its where I started in metal, literally with this song an a few other of what people say are "pop" slipknot songs. Eventually it lead me deeper an into crazier stuff, bridging the gap in music isnt always bad, it would have been bad if slipknot had changed everything they did but they didnt, thats my opinion

here's some fun facts: this video was filmed in a fan's house, nearby the Joey, the drummer's house and they paid a sum for the damages - the home was already due for renovation. Mick, the lead guitarist with that silver mask, was a music teacher. Their masks smell bad, really bad. beautiful playing in the beginning btw!

The second guitar in the verse that plays that opposing riff is such a cool effect. It's right on the edge of being out of tune from the rest but it works somehow. Slipknot is well known for doing that with the 2 guitars. Almost like the opposite of a harmony. Really interesting stuff

Really appreciated the Gymnopedies intro I'd say Satie is and was a great pool of inspirstion for metal riff and composition. Maybe not intentionally for most but you can definetly hear the same note progressions and choices in a lot of darker genres, that's just my impression ofc, am probably wrong and biased because of my love of Satie's work.

Beautiful intro by Judson! And I totally understand you here, talking about the grace note: you add more subtle spaciality. Gives it a light breeze of air in between the notes. It is more calming and soothes the song. Duality is a great choice, because we know that Judson does not really enjoy the 'gutteral stuff' and he likes a little melody to it :D This song proves that Corey Taylor is a very diverse singer. The almost drone alike conversing with us through the lyrics of the verses and then on the chorus he screams his lungs out beautifully, like his heart is always bleeding. And you are so right Richard: Corey really got angry with the critics condemning Slipknot for being more of a freak act than an actual lyrically strong band that will endure the first 'hype'. O, and Vermillion pt. 2 is indeed one of their greatest songs. Psychosocial also being a personal favorite of mine. Thanks guys! Keep up the great work!

Gutarist here: Thickness of the strings is one way to not get spagetti strings if you go low. Many also in extreme deep tunings use baritone guitars or a normal guitar with extended neck, kind of what you would do for an E-Bass that has also longer neck to hold the strings in tune.

The music video of Duality was actually 1 of the main reasons why I wanted to pursue to play drums as well. And now 14 years later, I've gradually built my empire from learning the 5 main instruments of a classic rock ensemble over time. And have explored & learned so many genres & playstyles. And also am very interested in writing classical symphonic scores for horror or other ambient cinematographic pairing. It's still so surreal to me, how impactful a single music video on MTV can be for a child, in wanting to dedicate his entire life to music. Thank you Slipknot Im forever grateful for your inspiring music. And despite their attire & aggressivenes, their message is actually very wholesome & pure. Bless you all

A couple of thoughts when it comes to ‘profanity’. One: what is considered profane or not profane is so subjective that it almost feels meaningless. The complaint should never be “you’re using too much profanity” (because sometimes that’s the point). What should be said instead is that you’re using too many of the same types of words; profane or otherwise. Because, like you said, ‘like’ can be overused as well and becomes repetitiously annoying. Two: one of the reasons profanity is so popular is the rebelliousness of it all, and metal has always been a haven for those rebelling against the established order. Then ‘profanity’ becomes a small way of rebelling every moment of the day and it can feel quite good to make other people uncomfortable with your language - especially given they’ve likely made you uncomfortable at some point. (Bonus) Three: the way profanity and ‘like’ are used when speaking is usually as a moment of pause to think about what you’re going to say next. Some people, myself included, find verbal communication difficult and can be derailed easily so you use things like ‘fuckin’ to lengthen the sentence to give your mind a second to finally retrieve the word you’ve been trying to think of since you started the sentence in your head. I find this preferable to saying ‘um’ or ‘uhhh’ since those words make me feel as if I’m communicating poorly instead of keeping up the flow I had going prior to suddenly missing a word from my lexicon.

I was a big AC/DC fanboy and couldn't get into anything heavy. As a guitarist I used to just make fun of the idea of Slipknot being simple basic bullcrap. This song and before I forget got me into these guys. Next I bought Slipknot live 9.0, after that it was over I went back and listened from the beginning. One of my favorite bands now. Now Trivium!
