Day 10- After an unexpected extended stay on the archipelago, I finally got my car back and was presented with an afternoon of next-to- no wind, I packed my gear up while wating for the tide to drop and headed out to try and land one final monster pollack.
Ever since I started to fish, I've been obsessed with catching one of the UK's hardest fighting fish and to catch a double figure (weighing above 10lb) from the shore with lures has been a dream of mine. I've travelled all over the country, visiting many remote and sometimes hard to access locations, trying to find them this video documents one such lure fishing road trip. The style of catching is very important to me, and I always use balanced, light lure fishing tackle. Will I finally succeed after all these years of trying?
Tackle-
Reel- Daiwa BG Mag Sealed 2500
Rod- Tailwalk Hi-Tide SSD 83MH- 15-50g
Braid- Tasline Elite 20lb, 1.7PE
Landing net- SPRO Freestyle Xtender 3.8m
Follow me on Instagram- bit.ly/slippyinstagram
Affiliate Links- I get a small percentage of purchases made through these companies, but I only do this for products and companies I like. No rubbish!

Eyup Nathan. I once got stuck on an island hopping trip with my missus in the nineties. The wind blew up, ferries didn't sail from Sifnos and the plane went without us. No credit or bank card, almost no cash and a phone card with three quid on it. Now get out of that! We did of course. Thanks for the extra fish, the extra mile and the extra beard is just what happens to proper wild feral fishermen getting amongst it in a big way. Stripes earned there fella. I'll sithi after, Dave.

Like you I learnt about car keys a long time ago, I used to attach a spare key by magnet when away from home (not at home) in a secret place when I got out first time, and recovered it returning home. You are long overdue a small campervan my boy. By the way you're perfectly ok fishing between the dan buoys as the pots lie on the bottom . I.e. even if the string of pots are close cast between the buoys, so wind and tide don't get near the buoy line (vertical line), then when coming near the line of pot make sure your lure is well up in the water, when past let it sink again.
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets Жыл бұрын
When I was into mountaineering, I used to take my spare set and give them to a mate, but seem to have got out of that habit when fishing. Yes a small campervan would be ideal for me and still may get one. Totally get you with the pots, and I do do as you've suggested but the dan ropes were exactly where I need to cast to hit the reef😔 Thanks for the comment and tight lines👍🎣

Would you ever consider using 3ft of wire pike trace? It can be incredibly limp compared to the piano wire everybody used to use and I can’t imagine in lower light conditions it would make much of a difference in terms of visibility.

He's right but it's a tough place to fish, compared to places like Skye. Mainly the weather but if you live there then I guess you can choose when you fish. I met 2 lads who had fished for 8 hours on a beach and only had a whiting and a couple of flounders between them, they said to me 'hope you haven't come up for the fishing?' Another great session on the big pollock. However please take some friendly advice from an old hand. You need to look after those big fish much better than your doing, by getting yourself a big soft rubber net. Under no circumstances whatsoever should you be dragging those big pollock up those barnacle encrusted rocks to descale them + return them very gentle rather than dropping them in the way that you do. Those big pollock are very rare and if you want to catch them again, make sure you look after them.
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the advice, much appreciated. I nearly always release the fish i catch and always want them to swim off in the healthiest state they can, especially these brutes. We did have a net but because of the angle of the rock it was nearly impossible to land them in it. Instead we waited for the swell to deposit them on the rock, rather than dragging them up it. When it came to the release, I didn't take any photos and just got the fish back the water as quickly as possible and the fish we'd released on the previous session, into the deep gully behind, seemed to struggle to swim back without a lot of coaxing. They seemed to swim back much more freely this session.

Hello fishing friend! I've been following you for a while now, and congratulations to you, these big colins are well deserved! I live in France and I also have a passion for this fish. My biggest, in the pebbles, accused 8 pounds and I fish them with the rubber eel. What is your jig and do you have any to advise me? I would like to try your throw-and-retrieve technique. In any case, congratulations again!
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets Жыл бұрын
Hi! The jigs are called Razor Claw Silver Minnows, I was using the 40g version to help deal with the strong wind and tides. They're very cheap but effective, just make sure you change the hooks because they're terrible. 8lb is a great fish so sounds like you don't need any tips, but I found that just letting the jig hit the sea bed, give it one lift with the rod, start winding and did nothing else worked well. Hope this helps you and you get into some bigger colins👍🎣

That's an easy one in this location, they match the bait fish, but more importantly they gave me more distance so I could reach the reef where the pollack where hanging out. Hope this answers your question and thanks for the comment👍🎣

Distance and control. A friend of mine caught a welsh shore record pollock (which we released without a thought) on a dexter wedge. A decade or so ago. We both say it was over 20lb. Was a very big fish I remember that much. We had no scales no camera of course. It was a very similar mark to that and the Current record is only 18. Dare to dream maybe and throw some really big lures now and again.

Overall... Well done you! But... I bet it'll be a bit strange coming back down to 'light' braid and gear...?

In all honesty, it felt strange going up to heavier line, now that I'm back on the lighter tackle it feels like I'm back in the right place

Thanks Barry. It's a Tailwalk HiTide SSD S83MH, beauty of a rod. It's had a good work out with a 60lb blue shark and now some double pollack on it.

Which knot do you use to retie on your leader to the braid as some knots are fiddly and i’d say not easy when you have limited time to fish
@SlippyLimpets

I use an FG knot, seems fiddly at first but can now tie it in about a minute. The benefits of it out weigh the length of time to tie it.

@@SlippyLimpets you’ll need to do a video on tying it as one way I’ve seen which does help would be difficult in windy weather and some way of supporting the flouro reel
