This is an informational video, describing how to make a slit lamp in proper focus.
And the video also shows the different lighting controls on the Haag Streit 900 slit lamp.
Ophthalmologists and Optometrists routinely use slit lamps, yet some of them seem unfamiliar with how to get a slit lamp back in focus, if someone else has changed the controls on their slit lamp. This video shows how to reestablish proper focus of the slit lamp.
At 4 minutes into the video, I show how to MISALIGN the slit lamp beam -- so it is no longer in direct focal alignment. Why would ANYONE use a slit lamp that way?
The answer: “Retroillumination”
Sometimes to view a corneal defect or a series of corneal guttata, it is helpful to lock the focus on the cornea -- then shift the light towards the iris. Then the corneal defects are illuminated all at once, by the indirect “retro” illumination of the eye.

I am now retired. During the last 20 years of my optometry career, I also did optical maintenance of equipment for over 100 eye exam rooms, annually.
I made assorted videos about the repairs & maintenance, and posted those videos on-line.
I hope to inform other “do-it-yourself” optometrists who want to know how their equipment works - and how to repair their equipment, when possible.
I posted the videos initially on “Vimeo” - and they are now also posted on KZfaq.
On Vimeo, my actual name is listed.
For my KZfaq videos, I use a pseudonym - “Energy Conservation in Housing” - which is the name of a book I wrote in my youth.
