A look at slow speed control and how that helps with U turns.
I was inspired to make this video after watching other creaters on KZfaq and providing feedback in their comments that were well received.
Remember, a video can't replace time on the bike, so be sure to talk to your local school if you're learning or getting back into biking.

Hi steve, I am and Advanced Rider. I do my slow turns using your method, but I've seen many videos on slow riding which discourage the use of the back brake. Personally I find the back brake steadies the bike. Good video Steve, cheers.

Hi Stevie, i have completed my CBT on Sunday, just gone. I have also just passed my theory today! 😁 things like this arw invaluable! Ive never ridden a bike before Sunday, and getting as many tips as possible before going through the direct acces is so useful.

@stevie_rides look forward to seeing them. One thing I found on my cbt, when riding at slow speed, whilst the instructor was walk alongside. I really struggled to keep the bike straight, I'm not sure if it was because I was too tensed up? Or maybe I didn't have enough throttle a clutch control combined with rear break. But I couldn't keep the handle bars straight. I didn't put a foot down or anything. But it's something that's stayed with me. I didn't have any issues like that out on the road. But it's something I wonder about and what the reason could be. Any ideas?

@GT.Bugger as I haven't see you ride, I'll have to go with common factors that cause this. 1. Where you are concentrating. Often I see people looking at their bars or very close to their body. This results in over compensation. Try looking further ahead. You can test this by standing on one leg and looking at you foot, then try looking at a fixed point on a wall about 5m away. You'll see the difference. 2. It's too slow. Slow control works best at about 4-5mph, that's the average walking pace. 3. Find that sweet spot on the clutch. Finding where the clutch is slipping nicley and the right amount of power takes a little time. But once you find it, you'll know it. Good news is, this is easier on the bigger bikes, as you move onto mod1/2 you'll experience that. I take my students on a "conversion lesson" where we do a combination of slow skills based on the mod 1 for an hour, followed by a road ride for an hour to get comfortable with the bike. 👍🏼👍🏼🏍🏍

@stevie_rides thank you for the reply. I have been told that I will go on a progression lesson, which was described exactly as you have. Perhaps I was looking down and not in the distance. I didn't have that issue with any other slow manoeuvres, though. I've also heard that the bigger bikes are better to use when it comes to things like this. Thanks again.

I think there is a market opportunity to sell slow manoeuvring course to qualified (mature) riders, because I see an awful lot of very unsure riders these days trying to park up.

Do you teach proper gear selections? ie, you should always be in the most responsible gear for the speed on any given bike? I get so upset at the short shifting get into 6th asap brigade - but they're the ones who need a 1200 of course ;-)

@I_am_Thursday hiya, when it comes to gear changing, I teach my students to react to what the bike needs. You don't want the bike bouncing off of the rev limiter and equally you don't want the bike being lethargic. This is really important with CBT students who may need to shift down for hills, etc. My personal preference is to be in the mid range of a gear, allowing me to be reactive with the throttle. This allows the bike to be responsive if I require a bit more from it, equally if I shut off the throttle we start to slow. I will also admit to short shifting when following students as I know I need less from the bike and can save some fuel. Thank you for the question 👍🏼 ride safe 🏍
