Thanks for the video. I am working on not panicking when my horse speeds up on the trail. I find my anxiety makes my horse anxious too. This is easier said than done as a relatively new rider. I will work on this exercise in an arena.

In my class yesterday I was given a horse who had just arrived to the stable two weeks ago. At the rail it was obvious how worried he was about his head and feet, and the second we started on the trail with my class he was the quickest to the front of the group. My classmates (all at mixed skill levels) thought he looked happy, but his ears told me differently. Lucky I found this video again - it makes perfect sense now that he was all nerves during my riding class, and I'm even more determined to try and help him when I ride again next week.

The quickness can also come from how quick you post in the trot. The slower you post, the slower your horse will go.

I have two voice tones. One to slow down my horse and one to make it go fast. I don’t even need to kick my horse. I love my horse

I ride a pony called Paddy. He is small. He looks like a school master. He looks lazy. *gets on pony* *taps with heals - barely evens touches* Pony: *yeets me down the arena* (Paddy is sweet, he took off in canter with me down the arena but I stayed on.)

Your videos have helped me so much with my mare, I have always ridden trained horses and she is the first horse that I started training with natural horsemanship as a foal with all of the ground work of course with the help of trainers. She is green under saddle and so sometimes new challenges come up that I don't know how to handle as I don't have a trainer right now. Learning to slow her down and why she is going fast etc has been invaluable and works! Your slowing the trot video has helped us tremendously in only two riding sessions. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and for making it free on top of it all!! I can ride with confidence when i feel I know what to do to correct her behavior in a fair manner that works for both of us, so helpful!!!

I have found that keeping your balance and never bracing your legs (which also braces your upper body and pushes you forward) is key to slowing and relaxing your horse. Part of this is making sure your stirrups are not too long as this will make you straighten your leg and thus create the lean forward which gets everything speeded up as well. I agree that leaning back and keeping soft yourself is really key - horses are sooo sensitive to our movements and weight, we are often to blame to speeding things up without even knowing why!

I just stumbled across your videos on accident and I really like them! I'm definitely sending all my students to your channel. Thanks for all of your effort and your clear, concise explanations! I just wanted to add one little comment to this topic of horses who continually speed up under saddle--in addition to the reasons you mentioned, often, speeding up can be a form of evasion, especially as we start to challenge the horse for more engagement or collection or extention or beginning lateral work, etc. Horses are built to go fast, so that's not really that hard for them to do compared to some of the other things we ask of them. So, when we apply a leg aid for shoulder in, for example, some horses decide that it's easier to just speed up rather than offer the more challenging move. When they speed up to avoid engagement of the hindquarters, however, it can very quickly morph into a hurried attempt to regain balance since they will inevitably fall on the forehand in this scenario and thus begins the downward (speed) spiral. All in all, great video, awesome advice, keep up the good work, and thank you!

It is so nice to see a trainer, training people and horses and wearing head protection. 3 years ago a friend of mine had an 8 year old daughter who's head was stoved in- while in a pasture. She wasn't riding. She was just talking to her horse and another ran by- kicked its heels up and the damage is permanent. Normal is a completely different reality for that little girl for the rest of her life. So thank you, for being one of the truly few trainers I have seen who wears helmets just like their students. What a great example.

I ride a Saddlebred Arab cross horse named xerox. He is 19 and absolutely SPUNKY so fast and energetic. He is very quick and loves to evade everything. Catching it and collecting your balance, I mean catching every time. Will bring him back to earth, letting them get it they take it as a reward, and will never stop.

We do not use the term quick for this and it sounds sort of odd, to us. "quick" to us is a term we use to describe a horse that can move low very fast like a cat, for instance in cutting. We call a horse that wants to increase speed "hot". Once I translated the language for our purposes this was a very handy vid. How very astute of you to mention the posture of the rider. You get very high marks from me for stressing the release!

another thing that most dont bother trying is getting the horse to use its "thinking" side of its brain instead of its "reactive" side like spooking, or anxious etc.. thinking is having them do things that stimulate their brain instead of the same ole thing like flatwork on rail. doing unique pole patterns or stepping onto small platforms etc. do that for a few minutes then go do some regular workout. be sure to use this as a tool whenever ur horse is using its reactive side of its brain, it really helps!

I ride a Paso Fino who knows no other thing than SPEED 😂 She doesn’t trot and only paces and does a 4 beat gait every time before canter- she finds it easier to canter from walk which I find very weird! This video helped a lot, thank you!

I'm a beginner and I rode a horse that would just go faster as we're on a walk. Since I was nervous I was like leaning forward a lot and pulled the reins strongly trying to get him or her to stop (I can't remember the gender). Thanks for uploading this!

I ride a 10 yr old mare, Arabian Welsh cross. She is really spunky at the trot and canter. She likes to speed up a lot on the long sides of the arena. My instructor told me to have a rounder looser back. Not like really hunched over but not arched and stiff. Your horse can feel the tension. It was a big difference, a lot more controllable

My horse is 3 and won't turn when he is loping/cantering, he will either run right into the fence, stop if I ask for a turn, or run into a wall. I have rode him all over and he has run into something every time. He won't listen if I ask to slow down either. He is absolutely amazing at the walk and jog/trot. I ride him with just a halter and lead and he will do everything asked until I ask for the canter/lope. If he is in the round pen, he will do what is asked, rider or lunging, walk, jog, trot, lope, canter, and gallop, but when I am in the arena, he will make sharp, uncalled for turns to the middle, go to a gallop and act like he is going to slide. He has never had any reining training, just western pleasure, trail, and equitation. He will also lope/canter if someone is lunging him in a big area as long as he doesn't have a rider. He does not have any back or pain issues. Does anyone have any tips?

I am riding a horse who is very quick at trot... She sweats, breathes heavily and exeperience a lot od stress... I decided on a bitless bridle and it helps... Also I am trying to sit on her all the time in trot... It helps.

I would love to see a video of "how to slow down a quick horse from ground". I take care of a Shetland pony who is clearly too small to be ridden. He walks most times really slow or the same pace as me but when trotting he really runs off and I haven't found a good solution for it yet

I really need help with balance in the trot and control in the trot 😊

I find the horse I ride gets hot, particularly in the canter. Im only an amateur but these things work. 1. Be very relaxed. If you tense up the horse will tense up & they'll go faster. Its called escalation. 2. In any gait I want to be relaxed. For example, if I'm in a slow trot I'll only ask for a faster trot if he's relaxed. There is no point asking for faster motion if he's not relaxed at the existing tempo. 3. When he's rushing in the trot I try and get him more collected with a little more tension in the outside rein & using my core. As soon as he stops rushing I release the rein & core resistance. 4. When he's a bit hot he wants to jump from the trot to the canter. I find if I have him collected in the trot with good contact on the outside rein (i have the rein quite short) he can't. Initially he tries hard but then he relaxes when he realises he can't jump into the canter. I want him to accept the contact with the bit & relax. 5. I know its very basic I find its very useful to go back to a walk and do a lot of walk stop transitions. Sometimes I tap him on the shoulder & say listen. Once he is listening then Ill go back into other gaits. With the horse I ride he knows perfectly well what to do but he just stops listening. The walk stop transitions coupled with a tap on the shoulder with the whip gives him the message 'he's not in control & he needs to turn on his brain and listen'. Essentially riding in any gait should be extremely relaxing. If its not get lessons or think of solutions. Im only an amateur but these are things that work for me. Last time I rode him I practised all these things & he was so much calmer. I rode for 50 minutes & it was peaceful

I agree with this video to a certain extent. Except for the opening rein and tipping nose into the fence. Knew someone who was taught to do that, her horse was also a jumper.. She used the technique you’re describing and her horse tried jumping the fence, she fell off, horse landed on top of her and she died instantly. Not saying this happens all the time, because it was kind of a freak incident, but just be aware that things like this do happen. It’s best to not use the fence for training (or balance) issues.

Two of the horses I ride are young mares who think that they're racetrack horses in the trot. They're a pain to trot because they're so fast ;u;

I rode bareback and never had a teacher. You learn how to get on by yourself, and how to squeeze your legs. Had them get spooked and jump sideways, I never got dumped.

When the horse stretches does it make it harder to balance? Also do you have a video that talks about or gives tips for riding English?

I've been trying this with my horse and the problem that I keep running into is that once I release even just a little bit he speeds up even if I get him to the walk and release just a bit he goes right back up to a trot and same thing from trot to canter

From the title, I thought this video was going to be about taking the horse to the drive in and him trying to get to second base.

Can you guys maybe help me figure out a way to help my horse bend. So what happens is he starts going extra quick, and I start giving a series of little tugs and say easy and his head is going the opposite way that we are going if that makes sense. So like his head is going to the right when ewe are trekking to the left, when he is meant to look to the inside. I have tried multiple things but I don’t know exactly what I should try.

any one have tips on a horse that was trained to go go go by the previous owner? ie: rushes jumps, can't stay in the trot (goes into the canter), and takes off to a really fast canter? It is almost like he gets scared of being excited kinda. he also likes to throw his head up and since his little neck is so short he hits me with his forelock. My horse Willy use to get quick when he had to switch his leads at the canter and he gets quick when he canters over jumps.

Any advice/videos for slowing down a horse on the ground? 23 year old mare walks like her tails on fire and no matter how much we work on walking together, whoa, ground work, she won’t walk slow. She’s always in a hurry and not paying attention. She trips over everything and spooks because she’s in a constant rush. No medical issues, 10 year problem.

hi i used the tip you gave me in this video but none of them work on my pony. whenever i do a half halt then release when he slows down, he goes faster and turns towards the fence and trots at an angle. i can still use my inside leg to try and push him back onto the track but none of it works. any tips that you could give me? x

When you’re tipping her towards the fence are you using inside or outside leg with that outside rein?

My Problem is in the canter not the trot .. when the horse gets much faster i always lose my balance and can't keep my back straight and the horse opens from me for around two or three laps without being able to stop him ?! I fell out of the horse two times from that ! .. how can i deal with that case ?!

I've been having a lot of trouble with knowing the difference between squeezing and holding my leg against the horse. The horse I ride likes to rush at the canter and when jumping and I am having a hard time because right now, I am only squeezimg, but I can't figure out how to hold him with leg. Whenever I get in the saddle she instantly starts training it’s always a fight when I’m in the saddle she never goes slow so I have to be pulling the reins the whole time I want to be able to ride her to where the rains are loose and it’s easy not a fight the whole time how do I do that

My horse always has his head high. I think it is because he has a gait and he always wants to run and I can't keep him in a walk for a long time. I have to keep my reins really tight. And I can't use my legs or he will bolt or buck. How can I teach my horse to side step and pivot without my legs? I got the ground work done but I can't do it when I am on him. Should I get a tie down or leave him be with his head high?

What about if the horse is bred as a trotter, and trots too fast, would you or do you do the same technique?

What do you recommend for a horse that tends to want to speed up before being given cues. I have only certain places on my land that are safe to canter or gallop so that's where I tend to pick up speed when I want. However, lately my mare has been trying to take off in those places without my cues first
