sls is still a massive waste of taxpayer money... doesn't change that. I think a lot of people want it to fail so the government spends its money on more useful things without the pork

Cool thing is SLS could have flown within 6 months to a year of sep 29 2019 with mature flight hardware when CS1 was complete, just not tested hardware which is why it’s been so long since, also COVID of course, whereas starship couldn’t even load cryogenics itself without blowing up

I don’t don’t doubt starship will maker it to orbit but I do doubt it will be as good as they say. Like 87 dollars per kg is insanely optimistic. I feel like it might be a second shuttle. Great vehicle but didn’t achieve its original goal.

Right now, SpaceX is doing for the public alot like what the Shuttle did The shuttle made people excited about space again in the 80s, and the sheer sight of seeing something from space land like a plane was awesome to them Now we have Starship, which is the same. The promise of a MASSIVE fucking booster landing itself onto the same launchpad as well as the second stage landing itself is amazing Thing is however, NASA was too optimistic about the shuttle. NASA officials at one point were even saying that the program would pay for itself at one point. It never did. The shuttle was flawed, and had obvious design defects and flaws with it which were ignored because "The public must be appeased." Starship is the same. SpaceX is too optimistic about it, ignoring the same warnings and lessons NASA learned from Columbia and Challenger. Its a miracle spacex hasnt had major failures yet, but with Starship having no launch abort system just like the Shuttle, if they dont start thinking realistically, horrible things may happen. Starship's OBF was already rushed, which lead to the pad and lots of infrastructure at Starbase damaged

Hopefully. If there is any, then they are likely a minority whose voice is completely drowned by toxic "space fans" who belittle every single aspect of SLS. I for one, am I bit skeptical of Starship, but who knows what the future holds. It would be kinda funny to see the faces of today's "space fans" if Orion were to make it to Mars before Starship the same way it did with the Moon.

@@jrc1606 To be honest I think starship will be a absolute unit of a cargo transport and vital to space exploration in that role. But NASA and most space programs are not at all comfortable safety-wise with a manned powered landing on anything with a atmosphere. Look at how Crew Dragon had to switch to chutes. Starship will be the best cargo transporter of our generation if it works but I don't think it will be human rated.

Neither will be "colonizing" anything. They will be used to lift heavy payloads into space and create crewed research outposts beyond low earth orbit. But these won't be real colonies, as they will not be self sufficient, their crew will be regularly rotated to stay within the lifetime radiation limits for human astronauts and they probably won't even be permanently occupied.

"Starship" will certainly get to orbit. It's just a massive rocket and certainly even dumb dumbs can push big rockets into space given enough funding. The real question is - will "starship" ever be a reusable rocket as promised by Elon the great Musk? History of falcon 9, after 10 years is at best a rebuildable booster taking 1-2 months between booster refurbs, says no.

Even though I’m not a big fan of Elon musk you have to respect starship. And no I am not a big fan of spacex. I love that the fact that sls launched. Sls is my favorite rocket but you need to have respect for starship man starship is one of a kind.

SLS good, Starship also good. Working together, both will carry us back to the Moon--hopefully to stay this time. Godspeed Artemis!

Actually no, the rocket costs 2 billion. That 4 billion includes Orion and EGS. So you’d need to include the Apollo spacecraft and the Lunar module as well as the launch infrastructure to get the equivalent Saturn cost
