Reckful is known for many things. He's the original big Twitch streamer, a legendary World of Warcraft player and one of the most innovative streamers in the game.
But perhaps his greatest obstacle is overcoming his dark past.

This whole thing comes across very one-sided, painting him as this great person who's grown past all his mistakes. When you told the Mitch Jones story you completely glossed over the accusations of Reckful making sexual advances towards Mitch Jones GF Mira. They both claimed that the other lied about it, which was the main reason they hated each other so much.

There's a slight inaccuracy here. There were no subscriptions when Byron added his paypal link. There were partners, but it was so that the streamer could play ads and earn ad revenue. Byron was partnered, but he vowed not to play ads in his stream and said if people wanted to support him, they could do so via his paypal.

reckful? most don't know he used my sub rogue techniques i created.. and used them in arena to go undefeated. reckful became famous off my techniques.. and honestly. he's not very good. he used an ally character to duel me / befriend me.. and learned a few things, but for him to get famous off a few of my tricks, when i had literally over 200 secret tricks.. but my techniques took YEARS to create.. lots of theory crafting and testing.. my arsenal of tricks was beyond everyone. even confronted him in a game once.. he did not even respond because it'd ruin his "legacy".. but i win in the game.. i got my own named NPC in the game with the merciless gladiator title ((rarest arena title - that I should have had in 1st season arena, but disbanded too early..).. reckful merely got a shitty token you vendor. you get to kill my NPC in the game. basically. reckful stole my techniques and never gave me credit. many have stolen my tricks for fame. from neilyo to reckful to a bunch of others.. all got fame off my super trick techniques. respect to blizzard for giving me credit tho. i am the best rogue wow has ever witnessed. no one comes close. i was always 10 steps ahead of everyone.

I’ve never had any kind of “celebrity” death tear me up like this. I feel like I’ve grown up with reckful, watched him from day 1 being into the wow pvp community, followed him the whole way, and have personally struggled with a lot of the same issues Byron did. He Truly just felt like another one of my friends, and someone who I feel like everyone felt like they knew intimately because he put a lot of himself out there for others, and was always himself never fake or just using a streaming personality. Hell I remember being the one to tell him in mop that pet battle leveling is broken right now, and that’s how he went and leveled his Dk Aquaniqua. The crowning achievement of my world of Warcraft career was getting my ass absolutely farmed by him in mop and I absolutely loved every second of it. RIP to an absolute legend Byron “reckful” Bernstein you will be sorely missed.

What I find fascinating from a psychological standpoint is how he can read the pain his father went through, be fully aware of it and the affect it had, weep for his pain... and the do the same thing himself. Like he literally put his father through it again, fully aware of how his Dad felt the first time. It really goes to show that once you go down the mental rabbit hole, you become blind to everything else, because that makes zero sense. Its very very sad.

That excerpt he read from his fathers book is now so much more haunting knowing that reckful also killed himself, and I just hope his father still has the strength to carry on although I really doubt it. I wish I could have met reckful and been his friend. It sounds really odd but I feel like we could have had a deeper understanding cuz I have similar internal struggles that he did and I would have been a far better friend than that friend who apparently used him.

I think a lot people will watch this in the later half of 2020 after Byron's passing, and think that Slush, or someone else, should make a new version of this looking at his death as well, since this video was made 3 months before it. In my opinion, this video's timing and content will forever be the perfect culmination of Byron's story that we were allowed to see from him. Yes he passed away soon after this video, but I think this video not having his ending is how it should be. We shouldn't fixate on his death. We should discus it and learn from it, but not watch it as we watched his life. This video honor's the life he lived more than an updated video showing his death.

I had a friend of mine who killed himself. He was obviously at the lowest point of his life and felt that he had no other choice so that's what he did. He wanted to escape his own mind. The weight of his thoughts became to much for him to bear. It wore him down year after year and day after day until one day last year he had enough and he took his life in a room all by himself. The ripple effect that his death created was huge. It affected everyone who knew him. It changed people's lives forever. I often wonder if was able to have a preview of the aftermath his death created if he would have made a different choice that morning. If he could have seen how many people cared about him maybe it would have been enough to stop him from pulling that trigger. I wear a bracelet with his name on it every day. This bracelet and memories are all that myself and a lot of others have left of him. I know that the struggles of depression are real. I have experienced them myself and continue to do so, but my hope is that someone who is going through a similar struggle reads this and realizes how many people do care about you. And if they were to lose you it would destroy them in ways that you cannot imagine. It isn't worth it and there is always an alternative. Talk to someone and don't try and take it all on by yourself and bottle it all up inside because it will eat you alive. RIP Byron. I never personally met you, but you had a positive impact on thousands of people who watched you.

This shows that reckful didnt have common sense and did not have much compassion for his parents and family. He should of acknowledged the tramua his parents will have to cope for the rest of their lives because of his actions. There are so many people in a worse position than he is in this world. Also, the fact that he took trolls seriously shows that he did not have common sense. Escepically because he is a popular twitch streamer, he should have known that nobody takes trolls seriously and trolls are irrelevant people, unless you are dumb.

@@karmellammy4773 you're thinking from a logical perspective because your mind is somewhat healthy. People with overwhelming depression or other mental illness don't have this privilege. So don't talk about people like that when you have zero clue about what they were going through . Never have i really cared about a celebritys death. But this was heartbreaking.. Especially having seen this documentary a few months before. Scenes from when Reckful is reading straight out of his Fathers book, talking about Byron's brothers suicide, kept playing in my mind as I was processing Byron's passing.. Absolutely fucking sobbing when I think of all the things he's done, good and bad, and now he's just gone. The one thing that keeps me at bay is that I know that he is happy now, he is finally free from his demons. I think a lot of us who have watched Reckful for a long time felt really close to him without actually knowing him. Rest in peace, Reckful. I will re-watch this documentary in honor of you.

Fly high Byron... I’ve been battling depression for so long now. Most likely was the true reason my wife left 13 years ago and took my girls. Fast forward some years later and I’m hardly recognizable and for a short time lived on the street. There is even a man that my wife let in my children’s life who is now in prison for doing unspeakable things to them. I don’t know if I’m getting better. Fast forward to now and I’m just coming off the best year since 2007. Then Covid hits and my great job is gone. You see when you are so hurt that you actually lose your memory for periods of time just to defend yourself cause it’s own conflicts with people who care in your life. You push them away. It would be nice if at the bottom you think to call someone. But it hurts so bad to speak it out load. I didn’t know of Byron til today. I feel somehow connected to him though. This vid was a great way for me to not only get to know who he is but also to cry a little for him then for me. Also inspired me to type what I’m sure I will regret. Stay strong everyone. I'm just glad there's a video like this that really explains the kind of person he was (from an outside perspective) I hope Byron can rest easy now and his family / friends get all the support they need. A sad day for all of us!

Thank you so much for this video Slush, I had gotten on WoW and my guild was telling me to go to the Cathedral Square in StormWind. As soon as I did I tried to figure out what was going on, as soon as I heard about ReckFul I had gone to twitch, youtube, and google trying to get information and saw this video after watching a bit of twitch on ReckFul's channel. Thank you so much for this video and the history. It has helped me a lot to learn about ReckFul, I wish I had known about him sooner. R.I.P Reckful (Byron) You will be missed.. and loved.

I certainly wasn't the most active Reckful viewer, I only found him when he first picked up hearthstone, and he was definitely up there as one of the top two or three streamers I watched most on twitch, even holding that place still. I always enjoyed his stream every time I tuned in, no matter what game he was play (or lack there of). The loss of Reckful is truly, truly, saddening, he was inspiring in more ways than I could ever even list. He was one of the most relatable, truthful, open, and down to earth streamers ever. And he never lost touch with who he was or what he loved the whole time. Rest in peace, you deserve every loving thought and memory we all shared with you. I wish I could say more still, but words are still hard about this. I, and the world, will miss Byron

Feels so weird knowing ill never see one of his streams again. im empty inside right now. i hope reckful is now at peace. If you feel alone please talk to someone.. even if you think its stupid and that people will not understand you. someone will always listen. feel free to msg me if you need to.

Exactly how I feel... knowing I will never hear his goofy laugh and jokes, his game... everything... Reckful was a different kind of streamer, I could love him like a best friend irl just watching him. This is devastating, I can't even sleep.

Listening and caring are so different. Majority of the time people just don’t care. Such a fucked up feeling.

What a greatly put up documentary on a guy who inspired me to become a streamer, like a lot others out there, years ago. It is so complete, many moments I myself forgot about his development as a streamer... The up & downs of a guy who always gave himself entirly to his stream, with only few limitations. Such a likable guy who really is easy to relate to on a lot of things. Makes me want to have a beer with him and discuss about gaming, investment, or his crazy breakup stories even though it's quite public already :D FeelsGoodMan.

Thank you for this documentary. I honestly never knew of him until I heard of his death, and the more I learned of him the more it really hit home. In February 2000, I lost my best friend and go-to gaming buddy to suicide and like many other people who have experienced this was left with so many questions and scars. My heart goes out to his family, friends and community.

I watched this back when you first published it and I cried. I came back and watched it after finding out about his death and this helped me stop crying and find closure for my favorite streamer. He will forever live in our hearts and will never be forgotten... Btw love the support right now from the WoW community for Byron!! and thank you slush for creating this!! Long live Byron's legacy! I am watching this a couple of times each Year, always crying as soon as i see or hear Byron... Byrons stream was a safeplace for me. He was the reason i became i better person. What happened to byron just shows how cruel this world is. Thank you byron, for everything you did and still do even if you are not here with us anymore. i will always miss you.
