Lianfang looks down on Shiyi because she's an illegitimate daughter so she assumes Shiyi isn't smart. However, Shiyi is very wise and strategic in her actions. Lianfang doesn't stand a chance against a brilliant woman like Shiyi.

I think his character actually likes her direct manner. She treats him like a man, not a "Lord". Makes him think, he gets to spar with her and sharpen ideas. Must be like oxygen in a house full of smoke.
