Meet Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms and learn about some of the issues small farms face when trying to get their healthier foods to the public.
Check out Joel’s KZfaq Channel: / @farmlikealunatic
0:00 Welcome, Joel Salatin!
5:50 Rogue Food Conference
7:18 How do farmers circumvent strict regulations?
15:40 Selling food from Joel’s farm
20:12 How can you find small, local farmers?
Please join me in welcoming Joel Salatin! Joel explains how all food is carefully sanctioned. With so many government, food, and zoning regulations, it’s very difficult for small farmers to enter the market.
To solve this problem, Joel started the Rogue Food Conference with John Moody in the spring of 2020 with the theme “Circumvention, Not Compliance.” When laws inhibit competition with larger producers, it’s more efficient to circumvent rather than comply with the rigorous regulations.
The upcoming Rogue Food Conference will be held at Joel’s farm, Polyface Farms, in Virginia. It showcases the unique ideas that people use to get their products to the masses. Many small farmers favor the private membership association model, which will be debated at the conference!
Another creative way that people are able to sell their food or products is by selling them as a component of a course. Some farmers might sell a butchering course online for $300 that also comes with 50 pounds of meat.
There are two Rogue Food Conferences each year. This year, it’ll be held in Virginia in the spring and Dallas in the fall.
Farmers’ markets are a great place to find local farmers and healthier food that’s not produced by large corporations. Look for boutiques or privately owned food stores and ask if you’re looking for a specific food, even if they aren’t selling it. Farmers know other farmers!
The key to our health is REAL food, so looking for great farmers is worth the hunt.

@@Drberg Doc a family member had stomach cancer. They were born in 1901. The doctor said that the stomach cancer was caused by raw milk (unpasteurized). This doctor said that his generation have high stomach cancer rates due to the unpasteurized milk. I have search for this info & cant find if unpasteurized milk caused cancer or not. Can you search & find out if this doctor was telling the truth or if it was just part of the government brain washing of doctors to prevent people from drinking unpasteurized milk). My thinking is that there could have been a parasite/virus/bacteria in the milk that indeed does cause cancer. The reason being I have searched out "is cancer caused by parasites" after reading Mereck phrama states in their manual that "all disease is caused parasites" and if you search "is cancer caused by parasites" you do find out that many cancers are caused by parasites. Which leaders to why evil JD Rockerfeller when hijacking ALL medical school curriculum 100+ years go took out parasite cleanse in medical school curriculum so he could sell his Rx drugs which ended causing all types of cancer. When this happened evil JD Rockerfeller started the American Cancer Society to hide the truth and to make millions & millions off of donations!!! Pls make more vds on parasite cleansing too. thank you for all that you do. When I used to live in Central Pa, I'd go directly to a small Amish farmer. Everything he did was real organic. Twice he was raided by Feds with full auto rifles pointed at him and his family. He asked them to show him proof of their jurisdiction over his farm. They had none and were forced by law to leave. Many of these Amish are experts at property rights and jurisdiction.

In Oregon recently, they have made it ILLEGAL for farmers to have small populations of livestock on pasture eating grass. At the time I read about this it was said it was because the large corporation feedlots had got to the legislators in Oregon and claimed it was unfair competition because the small farmers had an unfair advantage because they were not required to have containment ponds for animal waste and other facilities that large commercial feedlots are required to have. That is as un-american as it gets.

Will this trickle down to the individual homeowner that wants to grow home Vegetables. I’ve heard something about using too much water and bad for the environment. We have 53 Earth Boxes on stands and every year for the past 10 years I have grown peppers, jalapeño peppers, cabbage, broccoli cauliflower Eggplant, carrots, lettuce, red leaf, lettuce, green leaf, lettuce, Romain, lettuce, tomatoes, beef, steak, Romas, early girl, green beans, the pole beans, and four containers and bush beans, and four containers and pineapple. We have an abundance that we can’t eat it all. I do it as a hobby this is my hobby and it, thrills every neighbor and friend when I show up with a basket full of natures bounty and I love doing it. No charge. I loved giving it, especially with the prices of produce. Earth Boxes produced more than you could ever imagine beans and tomatoes. It’s just fabulous and I would just be lost if we were told to shut it down, especially after doing it for 10 years. The name of my garden is: THE GARDEN OF EATEN.

That's the problem. The big box stores lobby to cut out the small producer, forcing you to buy from them. They do it under the guise of safety, but every year we see more and more produce and meat recalls for listeria and e coli. They produce in such vast quantities the quality is compromised. I prefer to grow my own or buy from the local farmer's market when possible. Support your local small farmers.

Joel Salatin has been one of my hero's for a long time. My sister moved to VA and when my mom and dad went to visit her I asked them to go visit his farm (Polyface Farm), they weren't able to but they did order a bunch of product from him which they shipped to Nebraska and she gave me quite a bit. I used bones from his cows to make bone broth (never made it before so I was pretty nervous I was going to mess it up) oh my gosh it was GLORIOUS!!!!! Thank you SO much Dr Berg for having him on your show! So many people can now look into the type of farming he does and hopefully we can all make a difference in our own areas!

I can attest personally to the changes, as my dad and his dad were produce farmers for over 60 years and they had an open air market for 50 plus years. I worked in a grocery store in the midwest in the late 80's and 90's and the chain always bought my dad's excess produce all over the Iowa and Illinois Quad Cities area. Once the whole dock situation came into play, he was shut out.

Yes That's legal loophole that small local farmers go through when they label the raw milk for example, "not for human consumption" Now that I moved to NC from dumpster state of CA, this was officially the first time I've ever had raw milk. Excellent 👌😎

Great insights Dr. Eric! Below are the key points summarized using ChatWithPDF: 🌱 - Small farmers face challenges due to government regulations and industry barriers. 🚜 - Regulations and policies make it difficult for small farmers to sell their products in mainstream markets. 🌽 - Access to local, artisanal food is limited due to regulations and restrictions on small-scale producers. 🛒 - Large retailers like Walmart and Costco have strict requirements that hinder small farmers from selling their products. 👩‍🌾 - The Rogue Food Conference showcases creative solutions for small farmers to navigate regulatory challenges. 🍴 - Examples include creating pet food licenses for dairy products and using private membership associations to sell food legally. 🚚 - Innovative solutions like mobile kitchens and creative courses offer alternative ways to distribute food without traditional barriers. 🧀 - Finding and supporting local farmers requires effort and research, but the benefits of real, authentic food are worth it. 💡 - Encouraging collaboration and sharing ideas can empower small farmers to overcome regulatory obstacles and provide access to quality food.

Thank you so much for talking about this! I have turned to your videos time and again to help heal my issues with insulin resistance and hormonal imbalance. I’m a micro poultry farmer in southeast Virginia. We are facing a battle at the county level, and at the state level to keep our farmland. Even though we have one of the largest nuclear power plants on the East Coast, an hour away, They are trying to buy up all our land for solar farms. I’m very concerned with the way farmers are being treated and the consumers don’t seem to understand! The consumers think that we just aren’t explaining it right to the politicians - but the fact is the politicians don’t care about the long-term impacts of these decisions that they’re making. They don’t care that this farmland will be destroyed permanently.
