Here is a short video showing how I put together my small belt grinder, I have ground a lot of straight razors on this little grinder. I use an xy vise an electric motor in conjunction with some pulleys and contact wheels to put together a versatile machine.

No doubt it's super clever! I have a mobile sharpening business, www.premiersharpening.com, and although my 1x30 harbour freight belt sander kicks but grinding metal it has very limited tension and tracking ability. Your machine is awesome! I will be building one tomorrow.

I have the standard veil belt sander from Lee valley tools and it is great but not in the same league as this beauty. I had to bore out the drive wheel as 5/8 is a standard size motor shaft in AustraliaI, I also had a friend crest the wheel with aprox 1/2 degree of bevel on each side of a 1/4 " flat that was then scrapped to a smooth curve. that ensured the 5/8 hole was concentric and dramatically improved the rough casting. I have considered making a veil style grinder from scratch with a little more refinemen particularly on the floppy tension system veil use. After seeing the cross slide vise Idea i am rethinking my options. Thanks and all the best to you.

The bearings on the idler wheel are two 1/2 wide bearings that are next to each other on a bolt. They are OD 1.375, ID .5, width .5 , just regular sealed bearings. I bought all of the bearings and bushing form Enco tool supply. I made the little axles my self, you could use bolts or have them made.I also made some of the smaller contact wheels, the aluminum ones. The bigger wheels came form Sunray. I made some of the drive wheels, I scavenged the big drive wheel off of an old belt sander.

I am unfamiliar with the kind of bearings you used on your idler wheel. Would you send me a sketch of the complete idler assembly? Or, post it so others can see it too? Where would I get this style of bearing? I've only bought and used much bigger ones in pillow blocks. Also, where would I get the little axles you used? Would I have to buy a lathe and make them or have a machine shop make them? Did you get the drive wheels at the same place as the contact wheels?

Do you use this one or you "New Grinder" more. I recently watched the razor making overview video you made and I don't think I ever saw this one in use. Maybe I did but didn't spot it. But it looked like most of the work was with the big 72" grinder. Is any particular one your default go to grinder now, or do you still use them all?

Hi Lewis Razors, i really enjoy your videos and i think your razors are outstanding. I make knives myself but haven't tried a razor yet. Can i ask what you use that attachement for at 5.40 in the video? Is it a rest that allows you to roll the work across or something? I use a Radius Master which is Australian made (sold as Jancy in some countries) and sometimes the flat rest means i can't get a good angle at the tip, so maybe a rest like your's would help. thanks adam
@lewisrazors
@lewisrazors 9 жыл бұрын
***** It is a home made rest made from mostly bolts with long threads. I like this rest because the height and distance from the wheel is adjustable. There is a little round button on the front that the blade rest on, it allows for grinding curved blades. Here are a couple links of the rest in action. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l9aap7yg0ODLm2Q.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r5unrKZm1tnLhqOH.htmlhanks for you comments.

About how much did you spend on this grinder without the wheels
@lewisrazors
@lewisrazors 10 жыл бұрын
That is a hard question for me to answer. I bought the cross vise at Harbor Freight when it was on sell, I also bought the rubber coated wheels from Sunray. The rest of the parts were scrounged and scavenged from my own shop. I am not sure what it would cost buying all the parts.
@geedubb2005
@geedubb2005 10 жыл бұрын
Alvin, I bounced some numbers around because this is such a great little machine and I want to make one. Depending on your access to some freeby parts and creative building skills, a basic machine could be built for 3-400$ excluding the xy base. I can get a good used motor and I figured basic wheels from Sunray. The xy and additional wheels is what will make the price go up quick, but you can slowly add to your collection. I also have most if not all the material laying around as well as a welder. I'll call a favor in from a machine shop friend if needed. There's no top limit on what you can spend. I hope this helps. Thank You Mr. Lewis for sharing your videos!
