Small car crash test compilation - The Nissan Sentra, Toyota Corolla sedan, Toyota Corolla hatchback, Honda Civic sedan and Honda Civic hatchback are rated acceptable.
The Kia Forte, Subaru Crosstrek and the Subaru Impreza sedan and wagon are rated poor.
IIHS developed the updated side crash test after research showed that many of the real-world side impacts that still account for nearly a quarter of passenger vehicle occupant fatalities are more severe than the original evaluation.
The updated side crash test uses a heavier barrier traveling at a higher speed to simulate the striking vehicle. The new barrier weighs 4,200 pounds - close to the weight of today’s midsize SUVs - and strikes the test vehicle at 37 mph, compared with a 3,300-pound barrier traveling at 31 mph in the original evaluation.

The Outback and Legacy did incredibly well in this crash tests. The Crosstrek and Impreza are the oldest vehicles Subaru is still selling so it’s not surprising the Crosstrek did poorly. I’d like to see the new Impreza and Crosstrek in this new crash test.

Achieving an acceptable rank in the side impact test where an SUV sized test car ramming into you, is actually good result. It goes without saying, SUV's have a higher height profile compared to a sedan. Therefore, sedans will tend to do badly against a SUV. I understand the need to use such a test car because the plague that is the SUVs, are too prevalent on the roads.

how come so many car makers leave out backseat side airbags that are in the seats along with curtains. And some leave out knee airbags. and i wonder if they test with a full tank of gas or would that matter

Its all about forces on the dummy. The car can withstand the forces, but in doing so, it transfers more to the dummy. Its a delicate balance of the car absorbing enough of the impact to make it survivable, but not absorbing so much that it crushes you.

Question: If the car's fuel tank was drained and the fuel replaced with a safer liquid, how was the car able to be driven (1:34) to the crash site?

Did they clarify it was a safer fluid? I believe it was just fuel. Fuel tanks typically don't ignite in crashes, and they also likely have fire safety equipment on-site.

These tests are stupid. People that run red lights are doing 50-60+ mph. They need to bring the test up to those speeds so these car companies are forced to improve.
