I don't believe that the Toyota Yaris earned a MARGINAL. The head barely touched the airbag, and the head struck the left air vent! How is that a MARGINAL?!?!?!?!?!?

I mean, the result of the crash test, not the style. To me, it looks a lot like what you mentioned about the driver´s head and the airbag.

True. For 2012 to many 2014s excluding the Camry and a few more vehicles, the Toyotas did not do well in that test. Now, Toyota is revamping the structures of their already poor rated vehicles, improving their result.

If these cars score so low , why are they allowed on the road? Why don't the insurance companies tell the car manufacturers, that we are not insuring them until they make improvements? I'm sure they get paid off.

these tests were conducted by IIHS (not EuroNCAP), the main difference is that they evaluate the integrity of the structure of the car after the impact and then they estimate the consequence that such an impact could have on the driver using "poor, marginal, acceptable, good"..at Euroncap they use percentages to evaluate the exact damages caused to each limb or head of each passenger..half of these cars got 5 stars out of 5 (Fiat 500, Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta) , the Chevrolet Spark got 4

This test is a Small Overlap, Euro NCAP does moderate overlap. And NCAP does not do a small overlap. Lol even the honda fit in this test got a 2014 Top safety pick lol

What I take away from this video (as a small car owner) is if I must hit something, really hit it - don't try to catch it with the headlight. Also, Haha, all the big high-quality names got beat out by a rebadged Daewoo.

this is the "small overlap" test which just a few years ago was not a standard test. these cars are not designed with this test in mind.

None of these cars looked as if the dummy hit the airbag straight on. Seems they went to the left side of the bag, and if it was a real person they would have some real bad airbag rash on their face. As for the music I would've rather hear the music of the cars hitting the barrier. That's much more pleasing to my ears. Thanks

The experiment compares differing crash results caused by a single/common fixed point of contact... change the fixed point and the results may all totally differ again. Nonetheless, seems the left front tire/wheel assembly absorbs a lot of the force in all of these hits... hmmm. And the forward movement of the driver is redirected to an open space between the steering wheel and left side window airbags (actually the driver continues going forward but the vehicle shifts to the right upon contact)... double hmmm. Crash differences don't appear as result of any design intentions... such as placement of engine, transmission, steering assembly and metal/plastic components.

Not really. They're frame is so high up that it will overshoot the other car and get almost none of the impact. The real danger is for the car you hit.

mundotaku The only point tgey have is offroading wich is fun, but i dont understand the point in burning gas and killing the enviroment on your daily cummute when you could use that gas money for other stuff. Even if you want to look cool you can buy a mustang as a cummuter the ecoboost will give you 30+ mpg and you look cool

SirensOfCincinnati Actually it has not enough crumble zone to resist an impact and it has a huuuge chance of getting roll over. Also, since most of the lift is done in 80% of cases by people who don't know what they are doing, it is quite common to have terrible results.

The Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent are on similar platforms (being that Hyundai owns Kia), so how does the Kia Rio (Marginal) do better than the Hyundai Accent (Poor)?

The 2nd generation Kia Rio and 3rd generation Hyundai Accent (sold from 2005-2011) are on an identical platform. The same applies models of the 3rd generation Kia Rio and 4th generation of the Hyundai Accent (Sold since 2012). Only the difference in body styles separate the two models (The Accent had a smoother, premium look. The Rio had a sharper, sportier look). They both have the same wheelbase, but the difference in shape makes the illusion of one being smaller than the other (The Kia Rio was only 0.1in shorter and 0.6in wider than the Accent) even though they are technically the same. Only the first generation model of the Kia Rio was not based on the Hyundai Accent. The 2nd-gen Accent was already in production since 1999 and was sold until early 2005. Meanwhile, Kia sold it's own subcompact car, the 1st generation Rio, from 2000 to 2005. Hyundai and Kia officially merged in 2000 to form the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group, 2 years after Hyundai bought 51% of the shares in Kia (which filed for bankruptcy in 1997). Since 2005, all Kia and Hyundai cars shared similar platforms. Examples of Hyundai/Kia's shared platforms ----------------------------------------------- Supermini: Kia Picanto / Hyundai i10 Subcompact: Hyundai Accent / Kia Rio Compact (before 2009): Hyundai Elantra / Kia Spectra Compact (after 2009): Hyundai Elantra / Kia Forte Midsize SUV: Kia Sorento / Hyundai Santa Fe Midsize Sedan: Kia Optima / Hyundai Sonata Compact SUV: Hyundai Tucson / Kia Sportage Full-size FWD Sedan: Hyundai Azera / Kia Cadenza Full-size RWD Sedan: Hyundai Equus / Kia K900

+VoltTackle11 Well, I'm a car enthusiast who also researches about cars frequently aswell! As far as I know, Hyundai never bought Kia at its entirety, it's just an alliance. Like the PSA Citroen-Peugeot one. Besides, being logical, the difference of results may be simply due to the different shape of the bodywork of both cars.

+BestDucky “BestDuckyRBLX” RBLX I know and agree with you that it's more like an alliance compared to a complete merger. Also, it is true that the difference in design can contribute in different safety measures. However, Hyundai still has around 34% of Kia's Shares to this date, and is still is the majority shares holder of Kia Motors. Kia has 32%, and various global investors control around 3-6% each. When they first formed in 2000, they were a combined company selling 2 brands. Yet since 2007, both brands are not as much merged as they used to be but still share automotive technology for both brands (Engines, Car Platforms, etc.). Their cars don't appear similar, but they both have similar equipment due to the still-existing alliance. Though both brands now classify themselves as a separate entity by brand (Hyundai Motors and Kia Motors) in Europe, South America, and North America, the alliance that formed the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group still exists to this date in South Korea (now known simply as Hyundai Motor Group). This test is still an extremely hard test to pass. The most important thing to remember is that the front end needs to be designed to absorb all that crash energy. Also, dummy movement needs to be well controlled. As you saw some of those dummies unfortunately don't make contact with all the air bags.

I would rather say that the body structure of the car should guide the barrier away from the vehicle, so that the car sort of sweeps past the barrier. This way, the structure of the vehicle has to endure significantly less stress and the occupants would not experience such a sudden deceleration.
