Small colony of California rabbits

This is a small colony of some of our California rabbits. These are the bunnies, kits and a couple of younger unbred females "frolicking about". We just made the new outdoor space to get them in their own enviro and out of the cages. We're working on a bigger set up but that will come in due time. The expanded version will hold about 100 or more rabbits with sections to segregate different rabbits. Only tricky part is fighting the Texas summer heat. Maybe we'll enclose it in a large tent with roll up flaps and install a window unit a/c to keep the heat to a minimal. So many options! I'd love to hear suggestions, too.

My brother had a dog kennel (chain link, 6X6X10 with a door) left behind from renters that he gave me. I put a roof on it, added small chicken wire to the bottom 2 feet to prevent babies from escaping and set it all on a cement floor for easy cleanout, I put in 1 buck and 1 doe. They have produced babies like clockwork ever since. I remove the buck at times so she can have a break. I have lost very few babies and have enough meat to share with my aging parents. I added plenty of boxes for the buck, doe, and babies to hide in. Also lots of straw that they hide in and poo on that goes straight to the garden.

LOL the first thing I thought when it started to play was, yeah he's gonna love that when the new wears off and they begin to tunnel out. I'm in the process of building a big outside pen like that so mine aren't always in pens, but I picked up a bunch of junk chain link fence for free off Craigslist and am laying it down on the ground, and hooking the sides of the pens to it. We'll shovel dirt on top of that and sod it, then they can't dig out.

The cool things about rabbits is that they CAN inbreed without feer of a fifth leg growing out of thier forehead. If you're concerned about show quality then there is a small diference. In Californians, if a bro. and sis. mate then they can have a slight silvery tinge to their fur and that's not show quality. Other than that it's no biggie. We breed them for meat so we don't worry about it.

i hear people saying you dont want to raise rabbits too close to chickens because they share a lot of the same disease. i havent had that issue(my birds free range and like to hang around the bunny hutches(they scratch around under them to eat the bugs living in the poo) still, something to keep in mind. Some people put wire on the ground to prevent digging. worked for me at one time when i had a colony set up.

So I'm a vegan and I'm highly against eating meat in any way and I am a hardcore rabbit lover too but I want to say even though you are raising them to be eaten your doing way better than most others. Many people will keep half of those rabbit in not much more than a 2x2 and call the people who keep rabbits as pets dumb when we say things like they need more space, wire bottoms are bad, they should be kept inside (this is true I want to say but your doing a better job than most people so if you don't have a room you can just straight up give to the rabbits as they aren't spayed or neutered and may spray or make other messes if kept in a "human room), and also when we say things about their diet. I saw someone who just threw in vegetables and no hay (I wasn't able to see any hay in yours, grass can work partially as an alternative but grass hay is really what's essential, as your probably not attached enough to pay 20-30 dollars weekly on Oxbow or small pet select hay I would say go to a feed store if you have a choice. It's about 2-4 dollars more for a large bale and is much better quality than like cattle hay) I'll give you a 5%, much better than everyone else but at the same time, your still killing them.

My chickens and rabbits tend to get along fine. I have a small door opening the coop into the chicken run but I never close it. The chix go in to roost and come out when they're ready. They practically take care of themselves. The bunnies on the other hand need to be closely monitored in this TX heat.

i tried this, and while its neat in the short term, it doesn't work in the long term. the rabbit will soon eat all of the grass and cover the entire floor with poop,which you will have to continuously add mulch to cover up, which will collect water like a sponge when it rains. Then because of the ground being continuously wet the rabbit will start to develop fungal and bacterial problems and start to die off.
@reivenne
@reivenne 7 жыл бұрын
It's perfectly doable, just throw some straw down and they'll poop/pee on it, then sweep it up. Easy enough and it makes amazing fertiliser.

This is such a great pen! I love to see the rabbits in a more natural setting. Do you leave all the rabbits in the pen over night? How do you deal with predators? I'm sure a wire top would help with hawks and such but what about raccoons and fishers digging under or through the fence? Also do you let your does kindle in the pen? Once again great video!!!!

I am a new SE TX breeder, Hollow Kingdom Rabbitry and Reds. I wish we could get our rabbits off the wire for some playtime once in awhile, but we are afraid of them getting parasites. Also, they need to keep clean for shows, and I've heard baths aren't good for them. I will ask the Premier One company which electric fence net they make that could work for rabbits. We could set it up only on nice days for the rabbits to play, and think of some portable "hobbit holes" to make.

If you want to you can se my pen/cage. It's still under construction but thanks for lots of ideas you gave me! :) I can't make mine too big since we have too many predators that will kill them (and I'm not rich enough to buy tons of net and materials) but I hope it will work for 3 does + kits when it's done :)

Yeah it's just plastic netting. I have dirt piled on both sides of the net about 3-4 inches high now. They don't seem to interested in digging out. They burrow around the little yard but thats it. I don't water the colony's ground much. Only if we go too long with no water. I usually just go with the rain cycle.

Anybody interested in building an enclosed "Bunny Barn" let me share a hard earned lesson with you. Unless you want to be chasing rabbits at 2AM because they burrowed out of the barn do this: scoop out 2-3 inches of dirt from inside the enclosure, lay down welded wire fencing (real cheap at Lowes..$36 - 50' long 4' high (2x3" squares)) flat on ground then cover back up. NO ESCAPES!! I should rename it Alcatraz! =)

Great to see someone trying this. I did as well. I had issues with long term management of waste - it becomes a time requirement to remove excess amounts with that many rabbits in a defined space. As well, it works much better raising your own colony with only your rabbits. NEVER mix someone else's rabbits in yours. Can obtain devastating results for disease control and fighting between does. How do you manage these two issues?

UPDATE to this video: We've since done away with this set up due to the real killer of rabbits here in TX. The heat. These californians can't really tolerate much more than about 90 degrees. We've actually watched them seize up and die. So what I've done is built what we call "The Bunny Barn", complete with A/C. Now we have about 50 rabbits breeding all crazy like whenever and whereever they please. Some die, most survive, just like in the wild.
