Director Adam McKay's new social satire "Don't Look Up" is a complex film about big issues, and how lots of people would rather ignore the catastrophes that await them. In the film, two astronomers played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence discover a comet that's on a collision course with Earth. And when they try to warn the world about it, the people in power make it clear they'd rather go on about their business than do something.
Observant viewers will surely pick up on lots of hints and sly jokes in the movie, but even the most eagle eyed may not catch them all. Here are some of the details you missed in "Don't Look Up."

I honestly didn't think I would like this movie, so I held off on it. I can't remember what made me want to try it out, but I'm glad I did. Not only was it fun to watch, but it was also terrifying to see how close we are to something like this being reality. I really liked how the movie wasn't just one thing. It showed absurdity that we could laugh at, the super polite behavior that makes you cringe, and sadness from watching these people struggle because no one listens until it's too late. I loved it and highly recommend

Same! I got bothered by the trailer and was like "What? They're making this movie with these famous people and they're trying to be all scientific? Please." I tend to get super picky and critique-y when it comes to science accuracy and believability in movies, so I also held off a bit. But one day I was like "Hmm maybe I'll see it just to be mad" and I was well, well surprised. It was really a good movie and I'd recommend it as well! The uncanny accuracy of how it's like in reality, despite how the movie purposefully is over-exaggerated in some ways, is so good.

It’s too heavy handed for that I think. I clearly see the intent the film was going for but it felt like McKay and Co. were constantly out to prove how much smarter they are than everyone else. And I agree with the sentiments the scientists and others are making in this movie. It was void of subtlety. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@paulwillard81 "Too heavy-handed". Exactly what the entertainment news anchors in the movie would say. It's high time for everyone to be less subtle about these issues. To replace the shit-box news for real news. To call out the corrupt and self-serving politicians and corporate hacks (fossil fuel, pharma, military, banks, gun-lobby, etc.) for what they truly are. It's time to get in your face. Wake up and smell the coffee, Willard.

@@Yanni75 I'm already awake enough, thank you very much. And I had plenty of coffee this morning. Like I said, I agree with McKay's position on these topics. I just didn't think the film was very clever about how it went about putting the message out there. I'm allowed an opinion, Yanni. I want this to be an eye-opener for people, but if ONE MILLION COVID CASES in a single day, polar ice caps melting and attempts to overthrow the government aren't going to wake people up, I don't think this movie will do that. Coming off as "I'm smarter than all of you, let's all point and laugh at the vapid stupid people for being vapid and stupid" isn't going to change hearts and minds. IF the goal of this film was to change people's hearts and minds towards these topics, going with a less heavy-handed approach and not pointing and laughing at the people we disagree with would've been the way to go.

Reflecting Rip 🪦 and the talk show Morning Joe, what got me was Captain America saying he was a centrist. He didn’t look 👀 up or down he just looked straight ahead. Everyone got jabbed at. The fact that the reality was we let our fear be our distraction to our reality. I think most people at the end of the day would have chosen acceptance and community. The dark thing was the final flashes of fleeting how some people at the end went to desperate means while animals were just trying to seek shelter. It was unsettling and humbling all at the same time regardless of whatever spectrum you fall on idealogies or politics.

My interpretation of the dinner scene at the end is an allegory of us sitting at the table, discussing trivial matters, while Climate Change is killing us all. I felt that scene's weight is much more than interpreted here. We're literally eating mashed potatoes while the planet burns. To me, that scene reinforced the greater allegory of the entire, brilliant film.

A poignant moment for me that I've not seen in any commentary was when the earth starts rumbling at their dinner table and Dr. Mindy reaches his hand out to squeeze his son's shoulder. His son looks at him in surprise, and you can see in that moment Mindy's need for comforting connection with his son as well as his instinct as a father to reassure, to be protective in a moment that has an unavoidable fate. Everyone has to go. Your children's dreams and your dreams OF them and FOR them are over. All you can do, as the end draws near, is be comforted in your togetherness and love as a family. You don't see their bond in the movie, but you feel the lifetime of it in a single shoulder squeeze. Well done.

Dr. Mindy’s fate shows how a human being can alter its own course even if their trajectory is aimed at a certain point: PEOPLE CHANGE. It’s the hope that probably each cast, especially Adam McKay wishes for everyone who watched the movie. It’s not too late to change for the betterment of our species and also of our planet and its inhabitants.

It's getting close, Kevin and others. And yeah, asteroids aren't the only thing on the table. How many species went extinct today? The food chain says eventually it will reach us all. Like the death of bees. Any ideas how many plants depend on them? How about almost everything humans and animals eat. Predictions are out there saying sea level can rise more than 8 feet. Is your home safe? Yet our attention is on what some star said. Where they ate. My point is there are a lot of things that need more attention and are far more important to human survival right now. We choose to ignore them. Like the ostrich, we choose to hide our heads in the sand. This picture called some things out. I can't object.

I think you missed on the last scene at the table a little. The characters talking about coffee beans and other things that at the time are totally weightless compared to what is about to happen to all of them to me is actually a more chilling situation. It seemed to me like they want to try as hard as they can to keep calm and spend their last waking moments in comfortable conversation with loved ones. That being said I don't necessarily think its more so an allusion to the fact that everyone else was pretending as if everything was fine throughout the whole movie, rather simply trying to keep everyone else calm. Chilling scene.

I watched this movie around Christmas I believe, maybe a few days after it came out on Netflix and I really did enjoy it, the ending was a bit questionable but it was still a good movie. I love Ariana's performance of "Just Look Up" it makes the climax of the movie so much better. It gets really emotional after that.

In the movie the algorithm predicts a person's death. In real life social media (FB, KZfaq, etc.) it drives profitability, drives advertising placement, thus revenue. And you noticed that greed was a prevalent theme - killed the planet really: "you're going to mine the comet?" Kudos to the producers who worked in all that societal dysfunctionality. Best movie since the 1999 "The Matrix" IMO!

Isherwell's algotithm didn't misfire when predicting Mindy's death; it was accurate based on data available to it (that is, past data). Having been confronted with the information, Mindy changed his direction, and therefore the outcome. Were the algorithm to redo the prediction after Mindy stops supporting the money-grabbing plan, it would very likely allowed for the possibility that Mindy would reach out to Kate and try to reconcile with his wife. What is great about the algorithm is that it decided to name whatever dangerous animal the president would encounter on the next planet. ;)

I disagree with the concept that Kate switched up her clothing style in order to be taken more seriously. I was under the impression that the yellow outfit was provided for her by the stylist before she went on live TV. Maybe I'll have to watch it again, but she seems to switch back to her nerdy sweaters pretty much for the rest of the movie.

It seemed to me that Kate switched up her clothes once she told the president she was all in with her support. I think she was trying to be taken more seriously. Especially with they way Jason, (Jonah Hill), was treating her, and all the social media bashing. Once she was ditched like trash… she returned to her natural style.

"Satire of the complications that can arise at the end of the world." What a ridiculous description of this film. This movie is a huge wakeup call!! I laughed throughout. If you're not seeing the parallels to what's going on in the world right now, ie, people walking around masked and oblivious, you're missing the point! This movie outs the government, so-called science, the media and Hollywood. Many layered and briliantly done!!

There's more most missed but the one that hit me most is when DiCaprio stops his car to look at the comet then calls Jenn Lawrence. When he gets out of the car, his phone is on a dash mounted holder. Then when he calls Lawrence, he pulls his phone out of his pocket. Not a biggie, but I like to pick those up.

The whole premise of the "don't look up" campaign in the movie doesn't make sense to me. What exactly do they believe or stand for? The president announced a comet was coming to hit the earth in an emergency broadcast; i.e. the comet exists. The president aborts the first mission last minute for the BASH plan. People become divided on whether the BASH plan is good or bad; i.e. the comet exists but the effectiveness of the plan is a devisive topic. So when the comet becomes visible, why does "just look up" = the comet is real? When did people stop thinking the comet is real? The president never says or implies that the comet isn’t real after the emergency broadcast. The president’s office puts out the message that the BASH plan will save everyone and create wealth for all. If people don’t believe the comet is real, why would they follow the president who is saying it is real? Furthermore, Dr Randall seems to use his “just look up” campaign to convince people that the BASH plan will not work. How does looking up to see the comet in the sky convince people that the BASH plan will not work? All answers / explanations / interpretations are greatly appreciated.

I agree with the previous comment. 'Don't look up' represents the irrational opposition based on politics, that people foolishly latch on to even though it makes no sense. Like the anti-vax movement that people cling to even though it goes against their own interests, literally to the point where they could die.
