Succeed with your second plantings in summer, this is at solstice time. Temperate oceanic climate, 51st parallel, Somerset UK.
Ideas for all the vegetables you can replant after harvests finish of early-spring time plantings such as spinach, spring onions, broccoli, and potatoes.
I show you a harvest of no dig potatoes and then you see me transplant some leeks immediately afterwards. This makes full use of sunlight and growing time.
I share methods to suffer fewer weed and slug problems. No dig helps, as it does with reducing the need to water.

Charles you leave such an impact on people. You would be so proud of me! I’m trying to sell my house and have a small garden for the next homeowner. But I needed to create something that I could load up in the truck when the house is sold. I quit drinking diet soda but had about 30 2-liter bottles. Chopped them up and ran some nylon string through them, connecting two together. Then built a 3 bar brace and hung the bottles. I have tomatoes, various lettuces, Swiss char, beets for beet tops, asparagus and cucumbers. I go and collect my dinner everyday. Where there is a will, there is a way. Thanks for being such an inspirational gardener!

Pleasant video as always Charles. Badgers can kill Hedgehogs but rarely do, as they have little opportunity to do so. A female Hedgehog will avoid an area with high density of Badgers. The fact that you are seeing hedgehogs (again?) is likely the result of a reduction in badger density. There was a 5yr study by Nottingham University a couple of years back, that demonstrated that 51% of hedgehog deaths were due to fatality on roads and that in that same period there was only evidence of one death attributable to badger.

Charles, thank you so much for sharing your extensive knowledge and wisdom with us. I purchased a signed copy of your book and sowing dates calendar earlier this year, and both are wonderfully useful; it's clear that you put a lot of effort into them. I bought them, in part, because I was in a quandary over issues I had last year with crop yields from my then-newly constructed raised veg beds, but I would still really appreciate your advice if possible. In a nutshell, I wanted to create a potager-style veg patch (more attractive!) as part of my suburban Greater London garden (5-10m wide, ~30m long, landscaped + large patio, SE-facing), so I bought kits and built 9 wooden raised beds. Each bed is 80x80x40cm; I have a bad back so need raised beds. I sealed the exposed wood of the beds with outdoor wood paint, laid them out on top of black waterproof weed sheeting in a 3x3 grid with 40cm path space around each bed (to be topped with gravel in due course), lined the beds with the sheeting to prevent the wood rotting, and cut away most of the sheeting at the bottom of each bed, to expose the garden soil. I then laid a decent layer of cardboard over the soil, and on top of that the beds were filled with compost apparently designed for growing veg. I grew a variety of crops in the beds but had very mixed results: brassicas, sweetcorn and cucumber grew well, legumes weren't great (but I put that down to errors in how I planted them), however root crops were a total failure - I tried three varieties of beetroot, two of carrot and four of radish, but all failed. The leaves grew but the root never swelled or lengthened much more than an inch, even after two months in the soil. I thought this could be down to insufficient phosphorus in the compost; the beds have been empty since early winter, so last month I ran NPK tests on samples from three beds, each of which had different crop types in them last year. On a 0-4 scale of depleted to excess, P levels were consistently lowest (0-2), however K levels weren't much better either (1-3). Could this be the reason for my root crop failures, in your opinion? Should I fertilise the beds, and if so, what with? I do have Carbon Gold's Biology Blend biochar, which I was planning to add to the compost to increase its microbial content. I also have superphosphate inorganic fertiliser and sulphate of potash, however after reading your book, I'm concerned that inorganic fertilisers might kill or damage the soil microbes. Is this likely? The problem is, I have several chronic and often debilitating health conditions, including severe chronic fatigue syndrome (my mother and uncle did the bed building work, not me!), which forces me to be homebound most of the time. My memory is affected too, so all this combined meant that I forgot to mulch the beds in winter, and they've still not been done. They need to be topped up before anything can be planted in them anyway, because the compost level has dropped significantly (~25% in some beds). I'm aware that it's far too late now to use an organic fertiliser and still be able to sow/plant anything in that soil for the next month at least. I just don't know which, if any, modifications to make to the compost. If you've read this far, thank you so much, and I apologise for the essay! Any advice you'd be kind enough to offer me would be extremely gratefully received 🙏 P.S: cheeky final question! 🙈 Why do you multisow beetroot seeds when they are often multigerm anyway? Would each 'cluster seed' not produce multiple seedlings on its own?
@CharlesDowding1nodig
@CharlesDowding1nodig Жыл бұрын
Wow. I suspect the compost being not mature and that regulates the flow of nutrients more than what is actually there. I really don't believe in soil tests and also it does not make sense that you need extra phosphorus so-called for root vegetables because all plants need to grow roots. If you can get some mushroom compost this could be a solution for this year to bring your beds to full level again. Even if it's fresh it works, oddly enough. Then water, and sow or transplant, there's still loads you can grow starting now. I multisow beetroot because some seeds don't germinate and some do indeed grow three. It's a way of having four in a clump. Do have another go with them!

@@CharlesDowding1nodig Thank you so much for the advice! I had a feeling that the issue wouldn't be down to just one or two elements/minerals - things are rarely as straightforward as they may seem! My background is in chemistry (I was in the last year of my PhD before I got ill and had to drop out) so I've been fascinated to read about the science of soil and the no-dig method in your book. I'm determined to keep experimenting until I solve the problem! Given that I'm still new to this (I hadn't even grown veg before last year!) your input is invaluable. I'll get hold of some mushroom compost, and in the meantime I'll be module sowing like there's no tomorrow 😁

As always Charles , loved the video. I doubt that you'll remember, but, I mentioned beer slug traps, and that a hen blackbird was getting legless drinking the beer from the traps. Update. We, Gretna Green area SW Scotland, have been in a drought, hence slugs have been nil problemo. The traps had filled with debris and the blackie was never seen. Today we had a really heavy couple of showers, so I washed out the two main slug traps and refilled with new beer. Within ten minutes the alcoholic bird was down. Honestly she's a piss head. I left a leaflet about drug and alcohol awareness next to the trap, just in case she can read, but I doubt she'll take heed. I also got an email from an eighteen year old California cheerleader who wanted a date with me. She wanted my bank account details so she could send me money, and she'd be over next week she said. I never got any money I don't think I'll check tomorrow, and she never turned up. Bloody women.

For outdoor tomatoes, I can recommend the Swedish determinate variety called Glacier. It's actually frost tolerant, but most importantly it produces a very early crop and keeps on bearing fruit well into autumn. Tasty small tomatoes. I'm also trying Grushovka this year, another tasty cold-tolerant determinate variety that's from Siberia, said to be suitable for canning.

Aww… I wish we had hedgehogs 🦔 in the U.S. ! I look forward to your video on gambling with tomatoes outside a greenhouse. It is a huge gamble here . We have extreme temps that fluctuate by 40 + degrees daytime / nighttime often , throughout the Spring . Judging when to plant them out is my biggest challenge. That , and watching the nighttime lows for when to cover . Out of 24 plants , only 6 remain this year , due to our cold , lingering nighttime drops . And those are small and rather sad looking. I will keep persevering, year after year . Last year , we had an abundant harvest ! This year we will see

I grew borage last year after reading it tasted like cucumber. It does but the stems are fibrous even when peeled and the leaves was quite abrasive to eat. Thank you for these small garden segments, Charles! My 11 year old grandson and I just began a raised bed at their house - they hadn't grown veggies for several years, I had his dad mow the cover cover crop so we could lay down newspaper and compost. Had to start my garden plot over from scratch this year sadly. After miscommunication someonone went on to till my whole garden area after I specifically asked not to do so. I just started to get the plants into the ground yesterday! I do not know what kind of a harvest I will get but I can guarantee you that each plant will be tended too delicately! As always thank you Charles for the continued inspiration.

Wow, that must be so so frustrating! It shows how we are still going against the grain and in a working minority. It amazes me how difficult it is to change peoples' mindsets, even when they can see clear benefits to a change of approach. Good luck with your plantings this year.

😬 Don’t tell anyone, but we’ve had an unquashable hankering for new potatoes and successfully scraped the now extremely healthy permanent B2Eden potato patch for fresh produce. Absolutely no scab now and eating large new Charlottes for second day in a row. We were spurred on to do this after purchasing store bought new potatoes that were most definitely last year’s batch! Love your small garden updates. Thank you SOOOOO much. ❤️

New Zealand cordyline-cabbage tree I have found to be one of the greatest water robbers of all Time, I could not water enough once it got under a raised bed. Water and food was removed as fast as I added it to the soil so we had to take it out.

Hi Charles thanks for the update on the small garden your a inspirational guy showing us just how much food can be grown in a small space so much so my small veg garden 18ft x26ft is busting at the seems following your multi sow methods the amount of food I’ve had out of my little veg garden is unbelievable using the no dig method I’ve even got 3 laying hens there run is a 12 ft by 7 ft deep litter compost system everything goes through there before ending up in the compost bins to finish decomposing to make my own compost for the beds
