A small plane crashed into a mobile home park in the Colorado mountain town of Steamboat Springs.

The aircraft (N245T) was a Cessna 421C registered to Dan Dunn 67 who was flying with Jessica Melton 42 on board. The flight abruptly diverted from its filed flight plan between Longmont, CO and Ogden, UT (flying south of Steamboat Springs) toward the airport. It overflew the airport at Steamboat Springs made several reversing circles north of the airport, never entering into a standard pattern for approach or landing but did line up for a short straight-in landing on Runway 14, and then crashed about 1000 feet south of the end of Runway 32.

I don't think you probably need to wait to get a report on the condition of anybody in the plane - the thing didn't land....it obviously plowed into the ground and exploded.

No one inside that aircraft could survive that inferno. With the weather heating up, and these heat domes popping up everywhere, I anticipate there will probably be other crashes involving density altitude and pilots either not understanding or thinking they have the distance and power to take off and climb.

In summer the weather heats up. Always has, always will
@megarth18 күн бұрын
A lot of pilots underestimated the thinness of the summer air at high altitudes. Perhaps a cause.
@henryrodgers17528 күн бұрын
Excellent point. Take-offs at that altitude and higher summer temperatures require pilots to calculate lift and speed requirements, as they have been taught.

My buddy J said it was actually on approach to the airport when he saw it go down. They literally missed it by a mile 1/2 if that. sad.
@phillipzx37547 күн бұрын
A Cessna 421 shouldn't have a problem with the density altitude. But if it lost an engine, it could be game over. Those geared Continentals don't have the best reputation.

I am not surprised by the sheer volume of private aircraft crashes that occur within the USA. Absolutely ridiculous amount of incompetence and sub standard pilotage skills. The lack of common sense and failure to observe standard pre flight planning, inspection and weather observations are inherently the precursors to disaster. Your methods and duties as pilots require a high level of professionalism. Don't make your mark in the world as a smoking hole in the ground!!!

There should be designated areas where these planes can fly, and designated routes, so that people who don't want to live under the noise or risk of other injury can choose to live there. Currently they can fly pretty much anywhere.

That’s called “don’t live near an airport” which is similar to “don’t live at the base of an active volcano” or “don’t live immediately next to train tracks if you prefer a quiet evening”. There doesn’t need to be new laws so you can absolve yourself of common sense or accountability.

What an ignorant comment. Do you think people are going to ask if their house or office happens to be under a 10-mile wide air corridor, just in case a plane might crash on top of it someday? Really sir.
