Ein Film von Katja Becker und Jonathan Happ (2016) in Zusammenarbeit mit dem vom BMBF-geförderten Forschungsprojekt AFRASO -"Afrika's Asiatische Optionen" (www.afraso.org). Wissenschaftliches Konzept: Diderot Nguepjouo und Jürgen Runge
Over the last decade, Cameroon’s artisanal and small-scale mining sector has gone through several mutations thanks to the new policy which has attracted various international investors from Asia, Africa, Europe, and America. As from 2012 on, the involvement of Chinese entrepreneurs has dramatically accelerated the pace of progress in the sector. Some of them switched from other economic activities they were already pursuing in the country whilst the others, mostly mining professionals, moved from the Ghanaian gold mining business to Cameroon.
Chinese entrepreneurs have gradually become main players in the gold mining operations, recording successes, while other actors, e.g. Koreans, went bankrupt and in many cases have sold their business capital to Chinese without any competition.
Through taking over those projects coupled with their greenfield mining initiatives, Chinese investors has gained the image of successful businessmen in the sector. As a result, their working style and techniques are gradually being adopted by almost all local and foreign investors.
This is the context that spurred AFRASO researcher Diderot NGUEPJOUO together with the filmmaking crew UJUZI travel to Cameroon and shoot the 3rd AFRASO documentary. The film follows several active players in the major segments of the Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) in Cameroon: a Chinese investor; local entrepreneurs (member of Parliament, businessman, and middleman); workers, small operators in “Nguéré”, civil servants as well as the affected communities on their working sites.
The film reveals that political elite and administrative authorities appear to favour the involvement of Chinese operators because they consider it beneficial to the State and local entrepreneurs (service providers, middlemen…), while traditional rulers and business people who did not partner with Chinese are less supportive of this presence.
Furthermore, the positive impacts resulting from gold mining are reported to be enjoyed by Chinese investors and some local entrepreneurs while the communities are left with the impact of these activities such as land disturbance, water pollution, diseases...
All in all, the movie tries to put forward the ongoing dynamics and contradictions that are taking place in the Cameroon's gold mining.

the state should take 50% and foreign company's must rehabilitate the land. as there is no use of Mercury, why not plant seeds?

You have never lived in Africa obviously. Give the state 50% and 50% will vanish into Swiss bank accounts!!!!!! Trust me I know!!! I was once Treasury officer of ANGLO AMERICAN GOLD. The officials had us transfer the money of shore and after the mining was over they all left the country and lived happily ever after. The Army and police also got a payoff to play the roll of enforcer. Africa is SO CORRUPT IT IS ROTTEN TO THE DEEPEST CORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It may never change as it is so deeply ingrained in the people's psyche

Well i'm only sticking up for common sense and the sake of African development but the Chinese didnt come there to develop a community they came there to mine gold. The Chinese SEEM to be working class trying to provide for family. So why should we expect them to develop the community if we havent made it a condition in their contracts. If you had a choice to 'fund another nations governments projects with your ''hard'' earned capital or provide for your family generations to come? Which one will you chose? Isn't development the main reason we tax these foreign companies. Where does the tax money go? The money spent on licenses, permits and other documents they pay gov for them to operate. So we can put some money back in to infrstructure etc.... so if leadership arent enforcing or amending regulations to benefit the immediate community an environment there's need to be a change in leadership. Our problem is leadership and community. Our problem is social. They will deal with whom ever represents us as government. So if

The Cameronians must learn from the Chinese how to be a hard worker. Some Chinese are good and some are arrogant but they all have one thing in common, they are hard working people!
@Ali9718

They don't need to learn working hard doing a labourer job. The job has to offer some motivational incentives, as fair salaries. Anyway they don't need to have the Chinese exploiting gold in their villages because the Chinese would not permit them to do same in China.

Slavery is not legal anymore if there getting paid then its not slavery. If there not getting paid then there's a problem. The key word is paid or not paid.

We have done exactly that, watching and learning until we've been able to acquire an old excavator. Alas, we just don't have the financing necessary to run even a rudimentary operation. So for now, we wait while trying to raise funds (a fruitless task here in Cameroon)

You have 2 options. You either concentrate on artisanal mining to raise needed capita, and secondly to stop your corrupt politicians through all means possible from mortgaging your gold to the Chinese while depriving you and the future generation from prosperity.

Mr Ali from Alfa mining whines on about the Chinese not building his country for him, complaining that the Chinese just build shacks, take the gold and then leave. He conveniently seems to have forgotten that these Chinese operators are having to pay Mr. Ali's own government, (Cameroonians) 30% of their gold! The reality of course is not quite how Mr. Ali sees things. However, that is often the case with the Africans, they seem to expect everything for nothing.

What, Small-Scale! with 2,3 or 4 Excavators, are you Crazy! Chinese NEVER go to exploit anywhere for anyone other than the Chinese,so don't expect ANYTHING different, Wont happen. What you will end up with is the worst environmental degradation and no resources left, oh yeah watch out for the timber, they like that too, best to give em the flick, piss em off home! Its a pity the Mr Yang doesn't know anything about how to operate responsibly or to rehabilitate or that HE SHOULDN'T work in the river. On the good side they pay the state 30 %, but No Chinese will NEVER bring any development, they will just such it dry and leave.
