The results of our experiment with making silage from Sorghum stalks (and a few corn stalks) are in, and we're pretty happy with it.
We took a little longer than we planned to test it out, and were a little worried it might have gone sour, but it didn't go sour on us. It had that nice sweet smell, and the chickens seemed to like it. Wish we would have tried it sooner, but it was around 20 below zero when I was about to try it out and I figured it was froze, and the next thing you know it was warm and the snow was gone...but our small scale silage test was a success.
Sorry about the wind in the video.
If you haven't seen it, be sure to look at our video of how we made the silage here: • Small Scale Silage fro...

Very cool to know this works! It would be great to have a coop tour video, as it looks like your set up is pretty unique.

When you collect cut grass for silage is it real dry? I tried to silage my grass clippings from my pasture in 5 gallon buckets with lids and all of it went moldy. 😞

I have never tried grass. However, making silage is an anaerobic process and you need moisture or it won't work. Since it's anaerobic I don't think the lids would work. You need to seal it and remove as much air as possible. Mold is not anaerobic, and results when it's not sealed. Part of what made the sorghum work was it wasn't dry. If it was dry, it wouldn't be able to ferment. I would try putting the grass in a heavy duty garbage bag, squish it down as tight as you can make it (stand and kneel on it...grass will take a lot to compress and remove or), twist it super tight and tie it off, then put it upside down to help reduce air and see if that works. Again, it needs some moisture to ferment, perhaps freshly cut grass has enough (I honestly don't know). No promises, but since it's pasture grass you don't have a lot of investment so you could experiment with straight grass, and maybe do another one where you lightly spray it with water before you add it to the bag (just a thought). I would be thrilled to know if it works...in fact, if I get some time I just might try it myself. Sorry I don't have experience doing this with grass and can't help more, but I hope that helps! 🙂

@@foxcanfarms Well, I think you must be right about the buckets and the lids because I began mowing in the spring when the grass was very green and wet enough that it stained my hands. I silaged everytime I mowed so as time moved forward I was stuffing dry grasses into the buckets. So, I had wet and dry silage. They all molded. Thirty -one 5 gallon buckets with lids! What a mess that was to clean up. I will try again in the spring when mowing season starts and just use bags. Would you add anything into it such as molasses?

Ick, that does sound like a mess. No, I wouldn't add anything to i. It might even cause a problem if you add molasses. Sounds like you had enough moisture, so the grass with no air should be able to ferment. Farmers used to make silage in silos, and now they use the long plastic bag 'tunnels' to seal it and ferment. Silos were dangerous when they plugged up and they would end up with some mold. The bags seal easier and they don't have to have the expense/maintenance of silos, etc Hope it works!

@@foxcanfarms: Thanks so much. I can't wait to try again using the bags and I understand the process a bit more now. I really appreciate your video and the advice :)

Very cool, loved seeing this. Curious how the chickens liked it long term, and if you have continued, or plan on making more silage?

@John Harris thank you for your feedback! The chickens picked through what we had left that year. For chickens, it's important to have chunks, and minimize the strands since they really don't eat the more fibrous pieces. I wouldn't say they were crazy excited about it, and yet it was enough that I wanted to make use of the stalks and try it again that fall. Unfortunately for two years in a row for some odd reason I was VERY sick in the fall (perhaps you saw my health update videos on last fall & this spring) so we have not made silage since this video. I did cut the grain off each year and we feed some of that to the chickens, keep some for seed, and some for our family to eat (we have a threshing video). I would not use silage as a replacement for feed. I think of it as a good supplement or treat in the winter and it's a great distraction/something for to do in the winter time. If you don't want to keep the seeds for personal use, including them in the silage would be a significant nutritional improvement for the chickens and I believe it would make them more interested in it. We like to hang the seed in the run in the winter as another thing for them to do when they are all cooped up in the winter. We will try again this fall!! Thanks again, and I hope you like and Subscribe!

@@foxcanfarms thanks for the explanation! Great use of the small chipper. Now curious about the nutritional content of all the "unplanned vegetation" (aka weeds) that grow well on my property and could be free fodder. giant ragweed comes to mind as having some decent nutrition. Wishing you the best with your health and job. Sounds like you're on a good path. You have some great content on issues I've either dealt, or thought of dealing with. Subscribed.

@John Harris Thank you for your kind comments. Yes I think my health is going on the right direction. I dont know about the nutritional content of weeds, but that would be an interesting thing to look at (and we too have plenty of them 😀). We give the weeds we pull to the chickens and they seem to know which ones to eat, and which to leave. Thank you for subscribing!
