Smaller Games need a Resurgence

I love the GBA and SNES eras of gaming because of how many fantastic, smaller games that were constantly being put out. On the GBA we had 3 Castlevania games that came out over the course of 3 years. Smaller titles are easy to digest, don't take as much time to create, and typically cost less than the AAA and AA games in the space. I miss this era a lot and want big publishers to supplement their big releases with small, well-crafted experiences.

I agree, but I think the biggest roadblock to a return to this mindset is the consolidation of the big three's priorities. Instead of Nintendo having both the Wii and the DS, they just have the Switch. Instead of Sony having a PS3 and the Vita, there's just the PS5. It made sense to devote bigger games to the more powerful home consoles and smaller games to the weaker, portable ones. So without the main companies doing this, all we really have are independent developers to pick up the slack. You could argue with the advent of the Steam Deck and the apparent coming collapse of the AAA gaming industry, we have been experiencing an indie renaissance for years, now. That's why I love reviewers like Nerrel, who do great jobs shedding light on these types of games.

You're absolutely right. I love the Steam deck for that reason. Having a strong portable platform for indie developers is so exceptional. I've heard rumors of Microsoft planning a mobile console, which I think would be great for the market. I'd love Sony to start again too, but I really doubt it.
