Hard work and peace, amazing to survive on 3 acres them days let alone now, nothing wrong with thrift, no waste. Such a beautiful calm and eloquent voice, looking after the soil - thank you for finding this gem. We tried for several small-holdings, maybe we were spared as not strong enough to endure such hardships. A simple life - you think?

Hmmm..well As a Lincolnshire yellow belly I reckon not burning thorn brash in the open when it could be burned in the range might warm the house some. Then replant that hedge & break the wind. Our place is fully hedged

Interesting and very valid points. I did scratch my head at the complete removal of the hedge. I always remember Adrian Bell writing in The Green Bond about the waste seen every autumn as hedge trimmings that could easily be turned into faggots were burned in the fields.

@@exmoortrapper1187 It does seem very odd, but they seemed happy enough -although they acknowledged themselves to be inexpert farmers

@Shaun Verrall Hard yes, but an inspirational man to many. I'm really not sure about organics....

It sounds nice in some ways, but it's also a return to a subsistance peasant economy. Small holdings of this nature render a high percentage of the land unproductive, because a greater fraction of the land is taken up with house, tracks, sheds etc. Plus we've not yet seen an organic system of farming that produces as much as the standard farming systems. Again, it may sound nice, but it doesn't feed billions of people. Everything is a compromise.
