This long video is a close up look at the SmallRig Rotatable Horizontal-to-Vertical Mount Plate Kit for Sony α7R V, α7 IV, α7S III and α7R IV. The model number is SmallRig 4148. It’s designed to switch between horizontal and vertical shooting modes when on a tripod or monopod. It also can be used to bring the camera closer to the center of gravity when using a heavy lens on a tripod. Not all lenses however as you’ll see. The kit comes with a baseplate that attaches to the bottom of the camera. And it comes with A rotatable Lens Ring Mounting Plate for Vertical to Horizontal switching.
It can be a great option for photographers and videographers who want a quick and easy way to switch between horizontal and vertical shooting modes. The kit seems Sturdy, well-made and seems like it’s built to last, and it is lightweight and compact enough to carry with you on photoshoots.
Here are some of the pros and cons of this SmallRig Mount Plate Kit, I could think of.

It could be a versatile and lightweight alternative to using a conventional L-bracket to mount select Sony mirrorless cameras to a tripod head
Cons:
- To me, it’s be a bit pricy
- Although it’s easy to use, the quick-release plate can be a bit of a fuss when you have remove from the mounting plate
Overall, the SmallRig Rotatable Horizontal-to-Vertical Mount Plate Kit for Sony α7R V, … is a great option for photographers and videographers who want a quick and easy way to switch between horizontal and vertical shooting modes.

I really like your video, I think it is the best about unboxing this rig. One small suggestion: Please consider using a smaller aperture when filming this kind of close up videos, so we can better appreciate de details of the product. Thank you.

Thank you for your comment. And thanks for this suggestion. Yes, I will test out with a smaller aperture for product review and see how it would turn out. Outdoor should be perfectly fine. Indoor, I have to test that out.

Great video, thank you. Does the quick release plate fit into the plate that comes with a Ronin gimbal? Specifically the RSC-2. Looks like it would fit i.e. take the place of the "riser" usually attached to the camera.

Thank you for your comment. About the plate fit on a Ronin, I wouldn’t know for sure. But I did examine the pictures of the Model RSC-2. Looks like if it’s going to replace the riser, it’s going to be parallel to the arm. If it’s possible, it would be interesting! But balancing it together, I don’t know. :)

Thank you for your comment. Yes, it should be able to. The neck (just before the metal contact) of that lens is the same size as any other Sony lenses.

Do you think the first plate can also attach to other smallrig cages that has mounting screws in front? I was thinking if this is aligned to other smallrig cages.

Thank you for your comment. It’s very possible, but I have no way of testing that. It could be an independent plate. Surely it’s possible. I’m certain about the bottom of the plate, once rotated, it’s very expandable. If you purchase it, let me know how it works out.

how i wish they will make 1 version with adjustable height for plate, as for rhinoceros cage users cant use this, removing the cage take time

I would want this to use it with the laowa periprobe, but unfortunately the E mount version of this product doesn't have a large enough diameter to fit that lens🤷‍♀.

The Laowa Periprobe is such a fascinating lens. Yes, I’m a bit disappointed myself with the ring size. Certain lenses I have would not fit. I’m hoping there would be a newer version in the future.

Thanks for your comment. I think to should work fine, since it has no port around the bottom. Pretty much any lens will, as long as it has no hindrance/port around the bottom.

With all that it did not cross Your mind to adress if it is apt to adress the upside-down user-case ?? (It does look like. But some other same type solutions restrict to exactly 90 degrees even unmounted.)

Hi, thanks for your comment. I wouldn’t know if it could be used upside down, or if it was limited to rotating exactly 90 degrees when I got it, and You’re right. For most things I buy that are new on the market, I just want to show what I got. Often, I couldn’t predict what to come.

Hi, thanks for your comment. The a7iii is not listed. I don’t know for sure, but since the iii is a little smaller, the lens mount may not be centered within the ring plate.

Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately in the description for this product, it doesn’t include the a7iii. But it might still work. However someone would have to test it out. For example the anti-twist hole may not fit. Hope that’s helpful. Thanks again.

Could this potentially damage any lens or camera body if used with the wrong tri pod?

Hi, thanks for your comment. When a lens is mounted, there’s a gap between the ring and the lens (all around the ring). The only places where where potentially metal touches metal are when the rubbers are worn out, but I don’t see that could happen anytime soon. Also I read on Amazon review, someone mentioning that the lens button on the plate (when mounted) presses down on the lens button too closely, and the lens may accidentally be turned and fall out-but for me testing it, I don’t see how that could happen.

Oh, about the tripod, you’ll need one that you can trust it to be stable. And I don’t see how it would affect it using the plate system.

Can you mount it on Sony A7s mark 2 with a sony to canon lens adapter ?

Hi, thanks for your comment. The lens adapter will prevent it from mounting for sure. However the baseplate can possibly work for the sii, but I can’t prove that. Siii is compatible (on the list). If I had the sii, I wouldn’t get the system. Hope that helps. Thanks again.

Hi, have you looked into “Benro QRB95 Quick Rotating Bracket”? It’s full adjustable and adaptable. It’s what I intend to buy. It’s very unique looking. It may not be as smooth in operation as this one in the video, but love all of its functionality.

Hi, thanks for your comment. Once off the tripod, using 1/4” -20 screws, you could attach all sorts of accessories like a handle. The baseplate itself could be used as a standard alone plate. However, a cage on top of it is likely not possible. But hole configuration on the bottom of the neck can be very versatile. I think you could do a lot with that.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I don’t know for sure, it’s not on the compatibility list. I’m sure there are some who tested it, and documented online. I’ll search around and see. I’ll report it here if I find anything.

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately not. According to their description, it’s for the a7rv, a7siii, a7riv & a7iv. But it’s possible, someone would have to test it.

I wondered if it's compatible with Tamron 35-150. Now I know :P The only ring I came across so far that works with this lens is the one from ATOLL. But they claim there may be an issue with pressing the lens release button. I like the idea of a ring, but I have to wait for the one compatible with T 35-150 as it's the lens I use the most

Thank you for your comment. I also checked the ATOLL website and their compatibility list. I saw that “ATOLL S is compatible with 35-150” but “will reduce the space of the lens release button.” I was thinking maybe the ATOLL C/D with larger inner diameter (75mm) would work better, but of course I have no way of confirming that. If I purchased one, I would definitely make a video about it.

@@TossSong I asked them directly if they have any photo with the lens. I wanted to check what a “reduced space” means and if it’s really an issue for me. But they didn’t have any unfortunately.

Does this smallrig mount not fit the Tamron 35-150? I just ordered this for that lens..it’s in transit..please tell me it fits!!

No it doesn’t, unfortunately. The USB-C port hump is in the way. It’s in somewhere in the middle of the video that it shows.

My SmallRig rotating collar was disappointing. Two of the main bolts couldn't be tightened with the supplied hex key. What's not being said about products like these is the sheer amount of bulk added to the bottom of the camera, so using them just seems awkward. I've returned mine and gone back to the L bracket. Simpler, more practical and cheaper.

Thank you for sharing. I’m happy to have open opinions on my videos. And I do understand you point. For me, as you see in the video I wanted to be able to use it with my telephoto lens but couldn’t because of the port. However, if I could, I would need the bulk added to the bottom to help stabilize the whole setup, since my lens didn’t come with a collar. So I think it would be different for each user-in my opinion. But I appreciate for yours.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I think it should be able to fit any gimbal, as long as it can handle the load. The baseplate has the ¼”-20 screw holes. So, my believe is yes.

Hi, thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately this one is not compatible with the A7C which I also have. Only for Sony Alpha 7R V/Alpha 7 IV/Alpha 7S III/Alpha 7R IV. There is a Canon one. My guess that it is possible they may eventually make one for the C as long as they sell more/well.
