He was stressed because he wanted to protect Clark but he was completely outside the realm of being able to protect him from most things. He wanted to balance Clark's life so he could become a good man and understand the struggles humans have. He also insisted on doing farm work like his father and grandfather did as tradition. We can see in the early seasons that Clark could do all the work in the farm but Jonathan doesn't allow it. Clark could just tell him he's not perfect and Jonathan was a very hard worker who overdid himself sometimes. Rosenbaum was right about the lines though. Clark just says one line or two and it's his response to a minute or two of Lex being right.

mthakore Not really, Clark had good points to. Lex at this point has been driven by power and control to the point where he manipulated and murdered anyone to satisfy his own quest to be a savior.
@d.j.24086 жыл бұрын
TheMegaUzumaki Yeah, I mean, he killed a clone of his brother for wanting to have a normal life, and he murdered Tess out of some twisted sense of "heroism." I mean, let's face it, the name Luthor may not necessarily be evil, but the people associated with it are rather twisted.
@ethrsag7354 жыл бұрын
Micheal Mah'moud Problem is that Clark assumes that everyone should trust him and not trust anyone else. These two were brothers in all but blood, their main issue was that neither trusted each other enough to keep each others’ secrets. If the both of them had been straight even after Clark saved lex from the mob boss and asked Lex NOT to reveal his secret, do you really think he wouldn’t? All Lex wanted to do was understand Clark and have the true brother he never had, Clark just never had enough faith in people to reveal his secret beyond any accidental encounters where he was forced to them, i.e. Chloe, Pete, Swann, etc.
@mayfriend29594 жыл бұрын
@@ethrsag735 I get what you're saying, but Clark never pretended to be Lex's friend. He was his friend, the first one Lex ever had, and that's what makes how they end up so much more tragic.

He wanted to be the hero of the story. He thought he was the hero of the story. Then he found out the person he thought was his best friend had an incredible secret that diminished Lex. Something broke. Possibly the best characterization of Lex Luthor as an incredibly gifted but incredibly wounded person in all of the Superman mythos.
@KentPetersonmoney2 ай бұрын
@@johnmcgreevey7795 It dose suck when your friend doesn't share a secret like that with you. I wouldn't pressure him. I mean Clark could have told Lex then Lex could have gotten beaten up or killed trying to protect Clark secret. Clark would have felt guilty then. He felt he needed to tell Pete because he was about to expose his ship that he found. Guess he figured if Pete knew who he was he wouldn't want to expose the spaceship anymore. Chole found out about his powers so he figured he might as well tell her he's an alien. He was in a serious relationship with Lana so he needed to tell her especially if they got married. I mean imagine if Clark had kids with her then their 5 year old kid punch a grown man into the ribs breaking them, or if they threw and other kid several feet on the playground. Lana would wonder how their kid so strong. So the reason he never told Lex secret because he didn't really feel he needed to. Now if they would have stayed friends for a couple more seasons I think Clark would have told him his secret. Lex did have a lot of resources so he would have been a big help to Clark.

"I tried to be your friend, Lex. But all you cared about was power and control". And all YOU cared about was keeping your secret, Clark. Lex isn't the only one to blame for their friendship falling apart. I hope other people realize that. If the both of them had just been honest with each other from the beginning, their friendship wouldn't have failed. You cannot build a friendship on lies and secrets. I know this is a TV show, but seriously, anybody with half a brain can figure this out. I blame both of them for their failed friendship

+Taylor Lange Lex gave Clark many reasons not to trust him (Lex). Not the other way around..for the most part. If Clark had told Lex his secret from the start, Lex probably would have destroyed the world by season 5. Sometimes we need to turn away from the people we know because the negatives outweigh the good. That's one of the harsh realities of life. In any case, do you tell your friends everything about you? I'm talking about your deep dark secrets. I don't.
@sirlunacy80668 жыл бұрын
+Taylor Lange I agree with you but from the beginning Lex is destined to be a bad guy, so eventually their friendship would become twisted and mangled, to the point where Lex's unstable personality, and Clark's character flaws would collide.

@nagatouzumaki34922 жыл бұрын
Well, Lex was right for wrong reasons (or at least he was partially right about reasons). All evidence points to Clark as major factor in death of his father in so many ways. Well, obviously having to hide Clark secret and deal with all the crazy things in Smallville that Clark dealt with would be stressful on it's own. However, it was Clarks decision to run away while wearing red kryptonite ring that prompted Jonathan to make a deal with Jor El that appeared to strain his heart to the point he suffered heart attack. Even further it was Klark deal with Jor El that lead to final nail in the coffin (mind you Clark at this point was aware of life for life rule) and lead to Jonathan death. Three his final heart attack was suffered because Lionel appeared to control Clark and know about his secret, which got Jonathan worked up to protect Clark leading to his heart attack. So in a lot of ways not only Clark presence In Jonathan put a lot of stress on him and strain on his heart (naturally and not) but also Clarks decision to alter course of event lead to his father death.
@Khaos7686 жыл бұрын
Lex was a good kid who had terrible upbringing, no one loved him and no one trusted him just because of his name, despite his good intentions, his constant effort to help others and even his cries for help towards Clark when he felt that he was crossing over to the dark side that Clark thoroughly ignored. It is common for people who don't have love to substitute it with hunger for power and Lex was no exception. Seeing for years just how indifferent everyone was to his best efforts, he finally gave up on them. Clark was a mean character, destined to be a tyrant on earth but had love and good upbringing that quieted his dark side. By season 2 Lex trusted pretty much every secret he had to Clark. Had Clark done the same, their friendship would have changed the face of the earth!
@d.j.24086 жыл бұрын
Khaos768 Yeah, he did try to help others on several occasions, such as helping Jonathan and Martha keep the farm. But you have to admit, a lot of his methods were questionable at best, immoral at worse. I mean, experimenting on human beings, coercing public officials, polluting the water supply....he had good ideas, but very bad execution. Clark gave him multiple chances to do the right thing, but his unhealthy curiosity and his inferiority complex just made him sink deeper and deeper until there was no way out. Yes, Clark had a big hand in Lex's downfall, but Lex was just as equally responsible if not more so.

I know it would have drastically altered the storyline but it legit makes me mad every time clark lies to lex. EVERY SINGLE TIME he lies to lex. It makes me so mad. They could have been good friends but clark built their relationship on lies and that's why lex lies to clark. Clark was supposed to be lex's first smallville friend. I'm rewatching smallville because I loved it when I was younger but most things Clark does actually make me mad as an adult. Clark does nothing but lie. Still my favorite actor for superman but wow.

@@parkerboy795 I'm not sure if I just didnt see a notification or its because I wasn't tagged so sorry this is two months late. The most annoying part about this show is that clark constantly thinks its wrong for other people to lie but he is constantly lying as well. When I was younger and first watched Smallville I never noticed a lot of these things like drinking, one night stands, lying, etc but now as an adult I can't rewatch a single episode without seeing someone drinking or lying lol. I still like this show but its not as great as I remember. I was more annoyed about how often clark lies to people. Also there are parts of this show that don't make sense. Like when clark decided to not be honest with lana after, "going back in time to before he told her and gave her the ring he made".. then eventually he told her anyway and the show made it seem like the reason he didnt tell her was because he still didnt think shed accept him. The script writers jumped around and forgot what they formerly wrote I guess.

@@DaWorldOwner Clark didn't always practice what he preached, but neither did Lex. Especially bad in Lex's case considering the evil things he did. “THIS IS *SMALLVILLE!* ” I think that’s one of Micheal’s best lines of the show, possibly one of the greatest in the show itself. The way he delivers it too like that’s a taste of the Lex Luthor that Superman will face off against in the near future. Even the line about Clark’s dad was so dark, you could see Lex tear up about it, like he envied Jonathan Kent’s love for Clark, he looked up to him more than his his own father. He tried so desperately to make The Kent’s see he wasn’t his dad and he was genuinely just a good man seeking the truth. It hurt him so much that Clark lied to him for years and kept lying even though he knew Lex was too smart not to know. It’s hard to keep secrets but it hurts even more when it’s your friends who are the ones lying straight to your face In my honest opinion Micheal Rosenbaum is the best live action portrayal of Lex Luthor so far. He’s unmatched, he gave such an incredible and different origin for one of the greatest supervillains of all time
@celticwelsh4 жыл бұрын
They really did make Lex too "right" by accident I think. Lex always knew there was more going on (because he had fucking eyes) and Clark was always so obviously lying about it. And we know from earlier seasons that Lex would keep Clark's secret if he knew - he got his literal brain fried keeping Clark's secret, and Clark LET HIM get his brain fried, and then a few eps later was mad at Lex for trying to get his memories back - like wtf, how are were we supposed to see Clark as in the right there?
@parkerboy7954 жыл бұрын
Except they didn't. Lex did start with good intentions, but eventually it changed to his wants and needs before everyone else. Yes, but Lex could have just appreciated Clark's friendship. He didn't and kept crossing lines to get the truth. Clark didn't let him get his mind wiped. He broke in to Belle Reve to stop it, but failed. As for Lex trying to get Lex memory back, yeah, Clark was being selfish there.

The man is on the brink of fully turning evil here. If Clark had told him everything, if Clark hadn't pushed him away...who knows what woud've happened.

It's hard to tell if things could have been different if Clark have trusted Lex with the secret. On one hand, it was Clark friendship that helped heals part of the traumas Lex had because his relationship with his father; on other hand, it was mistrust of Clark on not telling him that makes Lex obssess about the meteor showers and symbols. He felt betrayed and abandoned by the one he saw as his true brother. Someone who could even helped him with that mysteries he was so eager to find out more about.

Clark was one selfish prick. "so caught up in your own delusion you have lost track of reality". Except he was right about everything he said. Only clark being the prick he was tried to make it like lex was insane for whatever reason. This was his tactic with everyone. And then getting angry when lex points out clarks responsibility in his fathers death. Lex was right about that to. It was his fault. I know its a show, but i just gets so mad his dumb ass. And then when lex pointed out how he pleaded with lionel for years to show him some kindness, but instead he turns to clark, he makes it seem like it was because he was this angel, and lex could not be trusted. The only reason was because clark had power. The truth is that for some of his faults, lex started out as trustworthy, but lionel and also clark both pushed him away, making him what he became. Lex wanted to be normal, thats why he loved the kents, but only martha treated him like a human. Jonathan was almost as cruel as lionel towards lex. Lex in my mind is the victim.

tysswe1 true that. No matter how hard he tried no one trusted him or gave him a real chance, they're always half-hearted. so what's the point, no surprise when he was like fuck it i'll be evil like you all want me to be

Wizardwiwizard That's exactly what makes this Lex such a compelling villain. He wasn't a bad person starting out, and he made every effort he could to be a good person and strive to gain acceptance and love from others, but no one ever truly gave him a chance so he finally said "screw it" and succumbed to his demons. Lex was relentlessly bombarded with scrutiny, prejudice, distrust, and hatred which molded him into the monster we all know. In my opinion Clark played a major contributing factor to Lex's descent. Had he simply been straight forward instead of frequently stonewalling him, maybe things would have turned out differently.

@TheMegaUzumaki. You're wrong about many things. Lex didn't kill Julian as an infant, it was revealed many seasons prior in the series, before Lionel became Jor-El's emissary (and after Lex reveals this, Lionel tells him that things would've turned out differently between them had he known). He was only protecting his mother and had surpressed these memories many years prior as a result of this. And regarding Tess, he only used her after he succumbed to his demons, as was pointed out earlier. The first version of Lex (especially seasons 1 through 3 or 4), when he and Clark are friends, would never have done such thing.

tysswe1 Not really, Some of his friends have shown not to be able to handle his secret (Pete in season 3), not to mention be afraid or use him or other superpowers beings, so it's not like his fear was unfounded. Clark was right about Lex being lost in his quest for power and control

Does anyone know what music track that is used towards the end. I can't find it for some reason (they used it again in S9 in the scene with Jor-El, Zod and the ruling council.)

This Lex Luthor shits all over every other version to appear in television or movie form. FFS the problem with the DCU isn't the tone, the problem is the bad inconsistently written characters, and when you fuck up the characters there's not a thing that can save your movie. Nothing, you can load it with the best effects, you can claim that the dark, serious tone makes it good (it doesn't), it won't change anything. People can complain about the cookie cutter Marvel movies with forgettable villains all they like, at least they understand the characters. I question whether anyone at WB, including Snyder have a fucking clue about who these characters are.

You really can understand Lexs point of view in this argument.. I mean his actions are inexcusable, but you really can understand how jaded he is. Rosenbaum was really the best Lex Luther by far

No Clark, you were never friends with him. He loved you more than anything you just were unable to see who he really is. Friends don't hide their true nature.
