Smart 451 panoramic roof and windshield replacement

Needed to replace the broken roof panel on my 2011 smart 451. The windshield also needed replacement so I decided to make a video showing people how to get both pieces out and reinstall them. I apologize for the shaky camera work and the bad angles I am learning as I go.

In August of 2015 I replaced the solid roof in my 2011 Pure with a panoramic one just as you did. I did it by myself out under a shade tree in the driveway in 90 degree heat. I didn't have any specialty tools like you did so removing the roof took me much longer with some trial and error. I actually started out with just a hacksaw blade and some WD40 for lubricant. But I discovered I was scratching the paint off the tridion. So I had a long knife made from an old file and it sliced through the glue very nicely. Mercedes made a special sealer kit for replacing the Makrolon roof. It was called the E55 seal kit which I found on Amazon at the time. I practiced setting it down in place by myself before actually gluing it back in place. I found that the rear passenger corner wanted to not lay down flat as it should so I ended up laying a rag over the corner and stacking several concrete blocks on it to flatten it properly. I too recorded it with a camera on a tripod. But I didn't realize just as I was carrying the roof to place it on the car the battery died in the camera. There was no removing the roof to re-shoot the shot. I was so mad. I never uploaded any of the videos of the dozens of things I have done to my Fortwo over the past 7 years. I lost part of the videos when my hard drive died in my laptop. I guess it's just not meant for me to post videos of my Smart car. Great video and a fantastic job ! It's taken a while to turn a Pure into a loaded Passion but I have sure loved doing it. Everything from a lift and bigger tires to stereo, lot's of LED's, 4 cameras and a turbo and I'm not done yet. I've been eyeing a small nitrous system for my play toy. Lol

I’m hoping to start another Smart build next year. I have a crazy idea in my head but need to get a few things together first. I’m picking up a few vehicles this coming year that will help with the build.

My 09 Brabus has horrible frosting (that's what I call it) on the sunroof. I'm wondering if that can be buffed out like they do with clouded headlights?

I have seen it done. The frosting you see is the clear coat starting to come off. It didn’t offer very good UV protection from the factory. If you go on Facebook to the smart car owners group there are multiple people who have buffed and re cleared their roofs.

I don’t have a video of that unfortunately. I’m looking for another Smart to do videos on as I no longer own this car. The latches for the tailgate and glass are very easy to change out. Forgot to make a video when I did them on my other car.

Do you think the polycarbonate roof could be drilled and cut? I'm wanting to try to put an old school pop-up sunroof in my project battle smart.

I’m not sure. I know these roofs can get brittle with age and sun exposure. I have the standard roof here in my barn that has been drilled and I mounted a spoiler to as it is a thicker material. Haven’t had any issues with it. But I haven’t tried to cut it out.

Do you by chance have instructions for removing the interior panels around the seatbelts mount? I see that you have removed yours. I cannot locate instructions anywhere, thank you.

This car was actually used for parts before I purchased it. So I did not remove those panels. Unfortunately I have never removed them so I’m not sure exactly how they come off. From what I could remember they were underneath the lower panel, the lower ones had to be partially pulled in order to get them out.

hi, after you installed the windshield, didn't you put the rubber seal? not needed? tanks...

The windshield is a free floating window. It is only glued to the vehicle and doesn’t have the trim around it. Most manufacturers are going to that style for appearance and cost savings.

On the 450 you will need the gasket. The 451 is a completely different glass.
