A diesel Smart car has NO drain plug. After finding this out the hard way, I purchased a vacuum pump and made this video.

Good stuff and entertaining. Unbelievable that there's no sump drain plug. I guess it would have added three quid to the new car price!

Aww thanks Steve. It’s crazy isn’t it? Putting my cynical hat on I’m feeling it’s a thing to get servicing revenue. But you can buy an aftermarket sump pan with a drain plug. Will need a good flush at some point. Thanks for commenting.

Well for $40.00 i changed my oil pan to one with a drain plug. So much easier. As for your oil pump i did a DIY with same setup but hook it to my shopmate. I use this for my snowblower, and grass mower

How about using a 'draining / flushing oil' to flush out the sludge?

Can't you just put a bucket under the car, directly takeout the oil filter plug out and let all the oil drain out? Seems that would be the easier way and for sure all the oil will come out in a cascade anyway.

If I read your comment correctly… no! There is a) no sump plug.. b) if you just take the filter off it will not allow more than a fraction of the oil content out…. You can buy a replacement sump with a plug integrated… but sucking it out via a tube was all I knew of or remove the whole sump… but that’s messy

I am about to buy one from 2012 0.8diesel, is there any particular things I should be aware of and check??? I am not mechanic so any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Silverado GREAT CHOICE! Ok. Mileage and service records are everything. The diesel doesn’t come with. Sump plug so unless it’s had the modification and the owner has invested in an oil extraction pump poor frequency of oil changes will affect how reliable the engine is. When you start the engine upon viewing. Start it from cold and no white clouds out of the back. The most common maintenance issues are the front suspension mounts. Take it for a test drive. Take it over speed bumps. If it clunks. .... that’s not normal. Budget £300 in labour and parts to do both sides The worst is the gear selector. Again. From cold try it in reverse and forward gears... take it for a run. Then when you get back. Let it sit running to get hot and again make sure it goes into reverse smoothly. Great mpg low road tax and sturdy. It’s a great buy. Hope that helps

Smart E.R. Thank you very much for swift reply!!! The car has full service history and 69k miles looks great condition hopefully mechanically will be the same, I am hoping to pay around 2400-2500£. Thanks again!

Hi mate, I have smart CDI 0.8 2010, do these not have a drain plug, like the other smart cars?
@smarte.r.14507 жыл бұрын
Hi, no they don't.. I'm guessing its to get you to go in and have them service it. some people retro fit a sump though

How many oil you filled in? The oil pump must run while you pull the tube, otherwise the mud dirk runs back. These are real experts!

Good question. I had recently done a service the week before. Filter was changed then but felt the important bit was to demonstrate the extraction pump.

@@smarte.r.1450 im facing few issues with my smart when I bought this little dinky her turbo was gone n all engine oil shifts in intercooler finally I change the turbo also change all 3 filters oil air diesel my 1st oil change was on 60k miles driven with Delo ultra gold ( caltex ) 15w-40 now at the time of service I changed oil grade to LIQUI MOLY 5w-30 my question is is that change can harm or damage any thing ? other issue is car drops efficiency while driving because of carbon stuck in exhaust DPF also with the Smoky clouds what you suggest if i remove DPF from exhaust box what problem can be faced ? will really appreciate if you can reply on my WhatsApp +92 321 5143481 so I discuss further & will get more advice on my car issues regards ZeeDara Sheikh 😊
@zeedara5 жыл бұрын
one more question to ask I added LIQUI MOLY additive 200ml in 27litres Diesel but that was recommended up to 75 litres Now car sounds horrible from injectors not every time but while running on 3rd gear so far not driving because of multi issues all needs to FIX by senior advice from you !😊
@smarte.r.14505 жыл бұрын
Ok. Soo much there. So, you bought a car that already had problems and no turbo? You will need to run a diagnostics session first of all before you go chasing problems. These engine problems sound quite serious my friend. I would: Run a diagnostics session Flush the engine (I never use additives. Ever.) Only use recommended fluids That’s the only thing I can suggest that is practical

Is there no filter?
@smarte.r.14509 жыл бұрын
Carlos Speranza yes..there is an oil filter on both petrol & Diesel versions. the Petrol one has a conventional "canister" type. This Diesel one had NO drain plug and the oil filter was a cartridge element affair... the bottom of the engine block has a dedicated slot for the oil filter element..

Since this video is now more than a year old: did the engine fail quickly after that oilchange? :) Filling it to the max will kill any Smart-engine pretty quickly. Atleast for the 450, 451 and the 452 ones.

+DelphiTheDolphin nope... she still runs 100%.. as does my petrol version.

Just don't fill it to the max, just saying. 4/5 is enough.

No drain plug = sump full of tar like sediment eventually. Probably won't take long in a diesel!. Built in obsolesense. ; )
@smarte.r.14504 жыл бұрын
I guess that makes a lot of sense but if you change the oil regularly (or even more regularly) that should reduce build up. Or buy the sump pan with a drain plug 🤷♂️
@Maddie-Girl Жыл бұрын
You change oil filter that’s your drain
@smarte.r.14509 ай бұрын
I would'nt rely on that as the oil filter isn't lower than the sump leave dirty oil residue in the bottom.. MCC Smart left the sump plug off these as a prom[pt to get it serviced in house.. 1) buy a good oil pump to suck out the old oil or 2) buy a new sump with a sump plug conversion added.
