I bought ANOTHER Smart Car ... this time a 2011 Smart ForTwo Night Orange edition. One of only 235 ever made!
Why? Well because my Smart 450 is getting on in its life and the colour ... well I just fell in love with it.
In this video Dad and I tackle the underbody and rear sub frame corrosion and rust - as many of you have pointed out ... this car is VERY rusty - thankfully its only surface corrosion. We decide to remove as much of the corrosion as possible, use a rust treatment and then protect with Tetroseal Wax/Oil rustproofing product - will it work / do any good? Better than nothing right?

What do you use to protect your cars?

One of the best and cheapest ways of rustproofing is too buy 5 litres of 'bar and chain oil'. It contains anti corrosive properties and is tacky. So it sticks to where its sprayed. It also has excellent creeping properties.

Messy job but well worth it, even the cheaper stuff is better than leaving it.. once it dries its a lot less glossy as you saw.. Nice work Dad you absolute Legend.. and you too Jon 😁

Absolutely! It needed cleaning off and treating. Some folks might have their own preference or view on the product used. All I can say is. Time will tell!

Jon get at that exhaust and clean it off before you run the engine what you have launched all over the rear of the car is flammable and will melt plastic if it goes up ,better than nothing is about right for tetroseal which is a bitumen based treatment gets everywhere and stick like you know what to a blanket lasts about a year before it degrades and flakes off.

The one reason for rusting at the rear was possibly due to be towed at the rear of a motor home. Maybe if it was towed on an A frame supporting the front wheels with the rear wheels on the road - at such an angle the flow of air forces all the spray into the engine compartment. Whereas the plastic undertrays guide air flow neatly around… just a thought.

I’m thinking that this thing was drunk behind an RV to the seaside for most of its life. Would be interesting to see an engine hour count vs the mileage on the car to see how much it was towed.

Nice work Jon and Pete will keep the smart on the road for years to come well done on getting a good coat of underseal on and keep checking it and topping it up when you need to we always used built hamber and it works much the same hope the inspector was happy to sign off the job 😂 all the best daniel

Merc and VAG stuff - indeed most German stuff - of that era is surprisingly rust prone - not quite the iron clad promise of quality they once had - to be fair they probably didn't get worse its just the rest caught up with them

It’s mostly down to the rubbish paint everyone started using under cars… just fails early and starts corrosion. Helps to limit the life of cars so good for business…..

It's the best you can do, really... it's a lot better Jon , should be perfectly fine , I just normally go over it on a yearly basis , but I used that Lanogaurd 🤷♂️ personally , I think the products all do the same thing tho , great stuff guys, take care 🙏

Did your tetroseal dry to a nice black colour? waiting on mine. Also do you reckon its fine to have some on the bottom of my plastic fuel tank? Cheers!

It did. It dried off absolutely lovely. No issues at all on a plastic tank. I'd just stay away from the exhaust ☺️

Does it set completely dry or does it remain wet like oil?

It dries nicely, it does feel a bit 'tacky' for a while after but so far so good. I've also used it on my 450 now and a few other projects

I remember Jenolite being the original back in the day, the default tgese days is Hammerite Kurust. Some are called Rust Converters and some are Rust Killers.

I use Bilt Hamber products personally, I've great results with them. Owning two old Fords and two "tired" old dailys, rust removal/treatment is a pretty regular thing 🤣 That Lanoguard does look a decent product too, though I've not used it myself 🤔 Something is always better than nothing!
