Three years later: Have put over 23,000 miles, 5 oil changes, on my smart and your video was helpful from the start, especially the long drain plug with screen. I change my oil every 5,000 mile and also update my smart maintenance schedules to show oil change. As far as oil changes go, this is probably the easiest change in the industry. Oil filter and drain plug are easy to access, as shown in video. Thank you for posting! P

JoeyTai11 The worst thing to happen to my smart is the starter motor died. The car was under warranty otherwise it would have cost over $900! My smart isn't the smoothest ride on the road, but it's fun as hell to drive and I love cruising around town or zipping down the highway. BTW - I just made a new video showing how to fix a broken tailgate latch.

It's a fun car to drive around. Enjoy it while you can. Mine is turning 11 years old this year and suddenly everything is breaking down all at once. The A/C stopped working a year ago, not the ABS stopped working, check engine light came on, brake light came on yesterday and the heater fan suddenly quit working in the middle of winter. My next car will hopefully be an Elio.

Wanted to thank you again for posting the smart car oil change. I have now changed oil 3 times! I change at every 5k even though smart says it is a 10k interval. I drive hard and by doing this job myself, I am happy and save money vs having someone that calls themselves pros at and oil change shop. Note: Smart has a great downloadable maintenance schedule (10k/20k....etc). I have used these forms and added to my vehicle documentation history. Cheers, P

Just wow man, you ran your car without oil. How could you think that was a good idea? I'd love to see your next oil analysis and the lead in there from your bearings. You think all that noise was a sign? That would be metal on metal contact from having no hydrodynamic wedge of oil separating the moving parts!
@Denb7
@Denb7 9 жыл бұрын
Draining the oil pan doesn't remove 100% of the oil. When you pour oil from the bottle, does every trace of oil flow out and into the engine? No! Not even leaving it inverted for an hour would drain the oil out. Internal parts are still coated. Please read what I wrote in my reply to judge dredd below.
@justinv3080
@justinv3080 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah you're right about that, it's impossible to drain all the oil from the engine. You're right about many things in the video, however you will likely never admit to your one huge mistake. Draining the oil pan removes all the oil from the oil pickup which means you have zero oil pressure. Yes there is a film of oil on the parts in the engine, but you destroyed it as soon as you started the engine and the metal began to make contact. Why not share the video with your dealership and see what they think.
@Denb7
@Denb7 9 жыл бұрын
justin Miller The video is public. If my dealer wants to watch it, I don't care. I've changed my own oil this way for 40 years and never had a problem related to metal-on-metal wear or excessive oil consumption related to worn rings or scored cylinders. You don't give today's high-performance lubricants enough credit. Next you'll get on my case for only changing oil once a year after around 8 or 9,000 miles. Geez!

Thank you for posting your video. Here in England Smart are sold and maintained by Mercedes Benz and the servicing can be very expensive. I am gathering the info and parts to service my wife's 2009 MHD convertible. There are no workshop books available in Europe for ordinary home mechanics and you guys in the USA seem to have strength to walk away from dealerships. Thanks again Paul Ipswich UK

Paul Billingham Thanks for commenting on my video. I catch a lot of flak for running the engine before topping off the oil, but I don't care. I avoid dealerships, not out of strength, but rather necessity. In the USA, smarts are sold and maintained by Mercedes dealerships as well. I'm lucky to be only 30 miles from a dealer, but some people are 300+ miles from their nearest dealer. An oil change alone is outrageously expensive. That,s why I do it myself.

Never start the car without oil & never over fill your car with oil. There are several things that might happen if a significant amount of excess oil is added to your engine. Your engine relies on consistent oil pressure to keep the moving parts running smoothly. Changes in the oil pressure and overall lubrication of the engine can lead to: Engine damage such as bent rods in the engine or collapsed valve pipes. Catastrophic engine failure where the engine sustains enough damage that it cannot be repaired, but must instead be replaced. Excess engine wear from inconsistent oil pressure over time. Spark plug fouling, resulting in the need to replace spark plugs more frequently. Excess oil deposits in the catalytic converter.
@Denb7
@Denb7 4 жыл бұрын
Your 'no oil' remark has been discussed at length in other comments. The fact is that even after draining the oil pan, all engine parts susceptible to friction are still coated with oil. Operating the engine for 33 seconds at idle rpm, wasn't enough to remove that oil coating. So there was oil, just no oil pressure. Most affected parts might be hydraulic lifters, You hedged second concern by stating, "a significant amount of excess oil..." As you saw, the excess oil was marginal at worst. Perhaps enough to fill the empty oil filter that others have complained about. You failed in your list of potential engine damages because you didn't categorize them with respect to whether they would result from either operating without oil or with too much oil.

I push mine back when I pull to far ahead at the gas station positive you can roll it down the ramp with out starting it.
@Denb7
@Denb7 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I could easily push my car off the ramps. And because of the slope of my driveway it would quickly roll directly across the street and into my neighbor's yard. What is your recommendation to prevent this from happening? As stated many times before, after draining the oil pan, there is a coating of oil lubricating all friction points of the engine. There is just no oil pressure while running it at an idle speed for those 33 seconds. Please advise which parts will be most affected by the lack of oil pressure during this process so I may keep an eye on them.

Good day Sir. Very good video I am about to buy a smart and your oil change video has reassured me that I will be able to change the oil myself. I have to say the some of the rude comments about your running the engine with out oil are not needed. I do agree that the engine should not be run with out oil but I would not be rude about it. I wonder if you put a block or chock at the bottom of your ramps could you roll the car down or maybe have and assistant sit in the car to apply the brakes as needed. I like the way you marked the oil container to get quantity of oil. I actually do something similar . I have a large jug which is almost clear. Marked on the side of that jug are 2 or 3 marks which correspond to my motor bike van and car. I pour oil from the original container into the jug and then into the vehicle. This means when a container is not full I can use oil from 2 different containers and still have an easy way to measure it. I was a little concerned that having the car on ramps may leave old oil pooled in the sump but as the sump plug it towards the from of the car that will not be a problem. thanks for this fine video . Also I can't believe he got out just to move the ramps while it was running with no oil. Also Fram is well known as one of the shittiest oil filter brands. Also if its the diesel model NEVER overfill the oil its a good way to blow out your turbo seals.

I've stated over & over that there is still oil coating the parts after draining the pan, but people will believe what they want. While the car is on ramps, accessing the oil filler by reaching over the tailgate is a pain in the ass so I run the engine a few seconds with only that film of lubricant to protect it. I would just roll it forward, shut it down and fill it, but my driveway is just too short for that. I'm no mechanic and I don't recommend people do what I do, but I'm sure enjoying the mileage from the shock value built into this video. Thanks for watching!

Holy crap man. I garentee if you cut open your oil filter, there will be metal in it. NEVER run a motor with no oil. You should NEVER even put an oil filter on dry, always fill the filter up with oil to minimize dry start time. also, change the filter first, so the dirty oil in the oil passages drain back to the pan, so you get more out when you drain the oil. and no, never over fill the oil. there's a reason for the air space in the cranckcase. too much oil, and it will blow out seals, and cause oil leaks. And before anyone says anything, im ASE certified, and been building engines/ transmissions since I was 13.

+MVP11489 Holy crap man. Do you think I really give a sh**? Are there not enough disclaimers to get through to you that I'm not really concerned about those 33 seconds with no oil pressure? How do you fill a filter that mounts sideways? I've had cars with side mounted filters. You want me to drain more oil out, but then freak out if I start the engine. Maybe the old oil I left in was just for that purpose. The extra dash of oil I put in was to compensate for the empty filter. I didn't top off the crankcase! Certified, schmertified... I don't care! Thanks for watching!
@MVP11489
@MVP11489 8 жыл бұрын
+Denb7 OMG, where to begin XD. First off, that rough tapping noise you are hearing are your soft babbit/ lead coated bearings slamming against a surface induction hardened steel crank journal. Do you know what oil even does? Do you know what oil pressure is even for? Obviously not. Oil PRESSURE keeps the parts floating over each other SO THEY DONT TOUCH, EVER. Ever pull apart a motor after running it 30 seconds without oil? Obviously not, because you'd know that the bearings are now scored up. Is this a problem? Nope. It will still run fine. Won't knock, won't really cause any issues. Only that you've greatly shortened the life of the motor. Why put 20-30k miles worth of wear on a motor, in a few seconds over pure laziness? I don't really care if you want to do it, but telling others to potentially ruin their car is a dick move. What if a guy with 200k miles on his car sees this shit, and ends up with a rod knock? I'm sure you won't give a shit. If you really believe you are not causing any sort of damage at all, then you have obviously never built a motor or know what's going on here. and telling other people to damage their cars is pretty messed up. If you want to ruin your own car, then by all means, go for it. but don't tell other people that its not causing any damage, when it clearly is. I know damn well that you have never put your theory to the test and taken a pan off after doing some retarded shit like that, or even cut open an oil filter after that, because if you have, that glittery puddle of metal ridden oil would have changed your mind quick. I've accidentally started motors without oil before, and found bits of metal in the oil pan from less run time then this. Hell, I once ran a straight 6 ford without oil down the highway (shitty fram filter case exploded), and it siezed on me. started right up the next day. did the motor knock, or sieze up from that? of course not. But there was a fuckton of metal in the pan. Uhh, what to do with sideways filters? Wow, how about fill the filter up most of the way, then get it close, then angle it in there quickly, the second you start to screw it on, the threads on the shaft will keep the oil from coming out of the hole as you screw it down, as the only place the oil can leak out of is the center hole. it certainly won't come out of the anti-drainback valve holes around it. The filter on my galant is like that. Really not hard to do without so much as a drip coming from it -_- man, you really have no clue XD I'm not saying all of this to flame you, or tell you to not do this. Its a free country, do what you want, how ever you want. But don't tell someone else to do something that could ruin their own car. Times are hard, cars are expensive.
@Denb7

+MVP11489 Well for someone who already knows far more than poor little old me, you certainly have an awful lot to say. As a mechanic I suppose you make money fixing cars. I would think you'd appreciate a video like this as it would certainly drum up more business for folks like yourself. Could that mysterious tapping sound possibly be coming the sound of hydraulic lifters operating without pressure? Be honest! This video is how I change my oil. I never tell people to do what I do. I have disclaimers in the description and within the video to warn people. If half the people who watch KZfaq videos did half the stupid things that other people have uploaded to KZfaq, then a quarter of the world's population should technically be dead by now. Tell me something... aside from the mortal sin of that particular 33 seconds during my video, was the rest of the video acceptable? Surely, oil does enter the filter even without pre-filling it, so I consider that point of your complaint to be moot. Assuming that starting the engine to circulate oil throughout the system, then rechecking the proper fill level would mitigate the issue of not filling the filter. Is there a considerable amount of damage done by not filling the filter, or is that just your particular SOP? I still can't understand why an ASE certified mechanic would be interested in watching a video of an old fat guy doing an oil change in his driveway? As a part time janitor, I know I have no interest in watching some other dofus dry mopping a floor or refilling a paper towel dispenser. So what attracted you to this video?
@MVP11489
@MVP11489 8 жыл бұрын
+Denb7 You answered my posts backwards, so it prolly would have made more sense the other way around but its not important I guess lol. Is it possible? maybe, most likely not. the lifters are sealed. they do not have a constant flow of oil going through them (unless they are bad). the oil passages only open once the valve closes completely, but they won't leak out since there's no air in the system for the oil to leak out of. The moment the cam engages the lifter, the oil passage closes. That noise is your rod bearings as a solid flat cam motor will make that same noise without oil. Even though I would not do it the way you did, there wasn't much wrong else with the video. Of course the engine would fill up the filter, but that's not really the point. the point is to minimize run time without oil. Of course, there will always be a second or 2 it will run without oil. That can't be helped, but 2 or 3 seconds, is no where near an issue as 30 straight seconds of no oil. My point wasn't to flame you, or bash you. My point was to inform you of the damage you are causing. These motors aren't known for lasting much past 100k miles. That's what happens in a 1 litre motor, pushing over 90hp with 11:1 CR. Most cars are making the same power with almost double the size of the engine, so its already pushed pretty hard for its size.

That's the easiest location I have ever seen for a drain plug and oil filter. What I would so in your case is to buy what's called a Japanese Oil Plug. It's basically a bolt with a safety valve on it. You push, the turn the valve with your finger, drain and then pull and twist the valve back into place. No tools needed to change your oil. It is NO DRIP ! I've had one on my Chrysler for 150,000 miles without a single drip. With the valve, you could just reach under the car. No need to lift it.

Denb7 For Denny and his friends. It's NOT only that the Fumoto oil plug value is easy to use, it's also the fact that many engines DO NOT have an oil pan and THUS IF you strip the part that the traditional plug screws into? You have basically stripped a part of the engine case. THAT could mean leaks forever unless you have a GREAT mechanic who is willing to re-drill the engine case simply to attempt to be able to put a bigger plug into the engine to be able to stop the oil leak. It's MUCH safer to put a Fumoto into the Aluminum engine of a Lamborghini ONE TIME, rather than to keep on tightening the plug into the engine simply to change the oil?

+Denb7 Let me give you a couple tips to be fair, Let all oil drain, you probably left 1/2- 1 qt behind, also let all the oil in the filter and then put it back in the box and then the bag so it doesnt leak out. and An adjustable wrench can strip the plug. Also never let a smart car 3cyl run without oil. It has very small parts that have 0 tolerance for that kind of running. Even cold starts have some oil to pump. Let the e brake up, neutral and let it roll. Use common sense sir. I may be young but I`ve never seen so much wrong in my life.
@Denb7
@Denb7 8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Kaplan Thanks for playing fair. The video is edited for expediency, the oil is drained and there is nothing close to a ½ qt left in the pan. Though it's off camera, the video does show me draining the filter before bagging it and I double bag as well, but not on camera. The adjustable wrench was not my 1st choice, but it became necessary because the drain plug is larger than my largest metric wrench. The drain plug is 10mm larger than the 15mm lug nuts that hold the wheels on. It may not be an ideal choice, but when used properly, the adjustable wrench is sufficient. Running without oil isn't recommended, but I do it and I don't care how other people feel, I had hoped the disclaimers plus my commentary would be enough to fend off critics, but apparently not. Why don't people make similar comments when someone makes a video of themselves deliberately destroying an engine by running it without oil? I have also discussed rolling off the ramps which, in my case, can't be safely done by me alone. Had I started the engine only long enough to begin rolling off the ramps (4 seconds) I'm certain that I would have aroused just as much ire as I do running it for 33 seconds. To be honest, I ran without oil just to get a reaction... and it seems to be working. I've defended my position on this to death, so I won't entertain it any longer here. This video is for entertainment purposes only, so people should just cool their jets. Thanks for your feedback!
