Күн бұрынThis is my in-depth review on the Smart Pianist app from Yamaha. This is a fantastic app (and it's free!) - it adds a ton of functionality to my Yamaha P-125. Note that my demo uses the iOS version, and also that the newly released P-125A (which is a downgrade from the P-125) will not have all the same functionality as the P-125 does.

Thanks for this. I have learned some more things about Yamaha Smart Pianist, and even about my P-121 travel piano. But I run the app on a tablet with Android, and from my perspective there is something which you missed. As you must know, there's a certain drawback on the P-121/125: Although the recorder (sequencer?) has two tracks, you can't record/sequence bass and then another instrument, because bass is only available as a split, and split turns the two tracks into one track. That has been a curse for me, particularly since I absolutely do not want to hook up to a computer. But Smart Pianist comes to the rescue because it offers multiple layers instead of separate tracks - well that's I call them. So far, I've only recorded three-layer tracks to generate audio files, but I guess it might work with more layers and for generating layered MIDI files as well. Anyway, making playalongs on the fly has suddenly got much easier! This has saved me from buying a DAW app and wasting a lot of time. The only shame is that there aren't more voices on the P-121/125/225 (or on the app) with which to take fuller advantage of the layering feature.

Funny you should mention this - I'm currently editing my review on the Chord Tracker app from Yamaha (part of which is built into Smart Pianist); the standalone app allows you to record ON TOP of an imported audio file into a new audio file as you play along with the generated chord chart which is super cool. Excellent, very nice review. As a music loving 75+ senior (Whoa! What did he say?), with no previous music training or piano experience whatsoever, now I have a Yamaha DGX-670, and have begun taking basic piano & am learning music theory. Of course there are manuals, but I very much appreciate that your sensible reviews bring my new keyboard to life with your videos and recommendations regarding the DGX-670. (along with your other videos as well) Will you be reviewing the use of Yamaha's Smart Pianist being used with the DGX-670, in particular. Or, maybe you've already done so, but I've missed it. Thanks again for the insight, thoughtful, and quite well presented reviews. T

Hey thanks so much for the kind words it’s really appreciated! Smart Pianist isn’t compatible with the DGX-670 (which is ok, the user interface on the DGX is so good you really don’t need an app). does the Yamaha smart pianist up have a background recording function like the Roland piano every day app does? On the Roland Piano Every day App, there's a feature that automatically records everything you play on the piano even if you don't hit record, as long as you have your piano connected to the app. Does the Yamaha Smart Pianist App have this function?

Great tutorial. Thank you. I use a P125 and I noticed that the app does not provide the option for ‘Styles’ as per the online manual. I thought the app would add more musical style options than currently available on the P125. 🤔

Is there a way to connect the P125 to both a smartphone and computer (e.g splitter) in order to use the Smart Pianist App while the keyboard is hooked up to a computer? I would be grateful for any tips you have on making this work

Thanks so much! To be honest, I have no idea! I looked online and there are USB splitters, but they never seem to be type B (printer port plug that goes into the keyboard) - maybe something like this combined with a splitter might work? www.amazon.ca/dp/B0BPCY7GV6?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details But I really don't know if that would work or not. @@PianoTone thanks for the quick reply Tony! I subscribe indeed as I finished that video and look over a few more. I do piano tutorials …the keyboard being connected to the computer allows me to use software that displays chords (such as ChordieApp) and play VSTs for the lesson My goal with using the Smart Pianist is to use the sounds onboard the P-125 more and its features in my piano tutorial. As you correctly alluded to, that app unlocks more features, and it’s way harder to access those same features using the multi-button functions on the P-125 itself!

@@AcoustikGasy Ok sounds cool - there is a great alternative to Chordie for an iPad called "MIDICulous"; it actually does a crazy amount of stuff (if you buy it) but the free version does the light up keys, the staff and chords etc like Chordie (and it has MIDI sounds built in). Not sure if that might work for you or not. Good luck!

Yes - I use both (I like Midiculous keyboard interface (I find ChordieApp’s chords naming convention a bit more accurate for now) The only reason I’m trying to connect the smart phone is to change the setting of the P-125 from the Smart Piano app…..I might try that combination you suggested Hopefully Amazon has both so that this doesn’t require a trip to Long & McQuade!

Enjoy your in depth videos. Is there any way to get additional voices such as more synthesizer sounds, brass etc using another app with the P125. Id like to be able to add additional sounds and would be connecting to a pa for jamming with friends.

Hey thanks a bunch! Actually there is (I have plans for a video on that :) If you connect your P-125 with a USB cable to a device with MIDI sounds on it (pc, iPad etc) then since the P-125 has an audio interface built into the USB port, those MIDI sounds will come back through the piano speakers. In order to ONLY hear those sounds though (and not the built in piano sounds) you will need to turn "local control" to off. The key map is on page 31 of the manual, but it's hold down metronome & rhythm and press C5 to toggle on and off. Hope that helps! Thanks for checking out the channel, feel free to subscribe

To be honest I haven’t used many; when I need one I use iGrand piano (it comes with 1 free voice then they want you to buy more). I’ve heard Ravenscroft 275 is awesome, it’s about $50 I think (haven’t tried it myself).

Hi. I have a Yamaha p515 - the best portable piano Yamaha makes. But I cannot get "Guide" button on the app to play "Lesson" section in teacher mode for Czerny , Hanon and Burgmueller books. I can only see the sheet music but not use built in teaching mechanisms. How can I do this? Do I need to upgrade somehow? I really would like to, similar to FlowKey app I have, also from Yamaha, so that it monitors my performance and corrects it, one or both hands at a time. How can this be done? Thank you.

I use this app since 1 year now. I saw videos from over 5 years of that app and it was so much more detailed and more options. Why is it now so less options with that app ?

Brilliant video. I have a Yamaha P515 and still got a lot of useful information from it. Let me ask you a quick question. At 24:14 into the video when you pull up a song from your Apple Music -- you can pull up the backing track, but I noticed some of your songs have a line underneath them that reads "...this data can not be selected..." I get the same line on my songs in Apple Music as well...do you know the reason for that?

Where is the 50 POP songs? I interested in that feature. It is on their Smart Pianist Yamaha website. Other KZfaq chanel also mentioned that, but didn't review the function.

Can you save a recording to another app or device in order to not refuted over it? My P150 has the ability to record 3 songs with 2 tracks each & I can copy them to a usb on a port which appears to be the only function of that port.

Thank you for the overview, I was wondering if you could help me with an issue im encountering. When im trying to choose a song from my library I can’t do it because it says “This data cannot be selected”. im not sure why its giving me this error.

I've never seen that error, is that from one of the built in songs or a song of your own on your device? If it's the latter it could be the format of the file not being supported (if that's it you could try converting your file to .wav which I know the app definitely supports). @@asal1326 Instead of pointing Smart Pianist at your music app, you can also import song files into Smart Pianist from a Dropbox account (you can create a free dropbox if you don't have one) - then you copy your music file to the Smart Pianist subfolder in your dropbox, then download it from Dropbox into Smart Pianist Hope that helps!

@@PianoTone I do not own an iPad. My realme 7 android just would not connect to my P225, tried 3 cables! It connected once after i spent hours reconnecting and now that i disconnected the cable it doesn't work anymore. Shows " target instrument not found " I bought the P225 after watching your review on it , and definitely felt it was a worthy successor of the P125 but it seems that the newer piano has more connectivity problems on android devices.

Most piano reviews don't mention app functionality at all, and I feel this is a big deficiency. I like my Roland FP60x more and more for many reasons, but the Roland app is terrible. All rhythms are accessed through the app on the FP60x and the app crashes all the time. Also, the sheet music functionality is severely limited compared to Yamaha. There is no waiting feature, and most songs are locked behind a subscription based paywall. As much as I like the FP60x, I probably would have shelled out a few hundred more for the P515 if I knew about everything related to the app.

I agree (about reviews not mentioning apps); in the case of the P125 it adds so much - even just registrations alone is huge. I wasn’t a huge fan of Roland’s app (the Bluetooth always lost its connection) but it’s still better than the Casio apps. My local store has started renting 515’s so I’m hoping to do a review soon on one. Thanks for checking out the channel feel free to subscribe

@@PianoTone I’ve subscribed for a while, it will be interesting to see your thoughts on the P515. That said, it’s four years old so I imagine Yamaha will update it sooner rather than later.
