A team of biomedical engineers in Australia has developed a smart textile that incorporates artificial “muscles”, in hopes that it will revolutionise the future of soft robotics and wearable exoskeletons. The team demonstrated the shape-morphing flexibility of the material with models of a butterfly and flower made from the smart textile, performing complex motions in the lab. Team leader Thanh Nho Do has bigger plans and believes that his team will eventually develop a human smart suit similar to the Iron Man and Spider-Man suits from the Marvel Universe.

Fantastic, one potential use could be a sort of massaging stocking to repeatedly squeeze the legs, this could help reduce the risk of clots and the like for those at risk of them. Potentially this technology could maybe even lead to a fully synthetic heart, it would obviously have a limited lifespan but it could buy time for folks waiting for transplants. What a fantastic step forward in technology!

So... just to be clear, we are talking about pressure fluid injection through flexible tubing controlled through an external pressure pump. (sigh) I can see that the pump is NOW small enough to be worn, but if THAT is what you are calling new... This is the same technology that resides in your blood pressure cuff that the doctor puts on your arm. The very fact is that you can already do this in large scale with your garden hose and a couple of tarps but the problem is scale; the larger the construct, the higher the pressure & pump required.
