Smashing ice from roof drain

3 жыл бұрынThis pipe is a roof drain. Once it fills with ice, water pools on the roof. Then it gets a bit warmer and the roof leaks. The only solution is to open up the pipe by smashing the ice, but without smashing the pipe.

Today is December 27 2023. My friend DeAndre, who I worked with for 5 years, the man that shot this video and who you can hear saying “damn!” A few times…… Today he was taken away from us. He will be missed. Watched him walk out the door to his car yesterday. Today he’s gone. He will be missed. Rest in Power, my man.

That’s why I was swinging so carefully. So I didn’t hit the pipe and hopefully strategically disassemble the icicle. I got lucky - it worked! Thank you for watching!

No question the algorithm made this happen. But it is natural and organic (totally unplanned) and I think that’s why people keep watching. The algorithm can only help so much, phony slick content people won’t respond to. Satisfying, and even more so, as this is an easy DIY fix, instead of having to pay someone to do it. It was also something that REALLY needed to be done to prevent water and ice damage. Left undone, the weight of the water and ice could easily collapse the roof, and maybe even the whole building. If someone was inside when that happened, they could be hurt or killed. Instead, a few good whacks with a hammer or mallet, and a chisel or pick fixed the problem before it could turn into a disaster.🏔️👷🏻♀️⚒️🔨⛏️🤗

Most people lack the self confidence to attempt the most simple manual tasks requiring basic life skills like using hand tools and risking possibly getting a little bit wet. It's a real issue. Lack of father figures? (I would also encourage mothers to take on these duties).

The majority of the pipe is inside the building, so it should not be frozen.

Awesome job!!! In Alaska is where I realized just how important it is to make sure your roof has a working drain in the winter as well as the summer. Heck, we even shovel the roof! I was laughing first time I saw this guy up on his roof shoveling the snow and my brother quickly told me that enough snow on the roof can cause the roof to collapse and it could happen with anyone inside. 😳

That's why smaller buildings up North simply use extreme inclination roof - sure, it eats a lot of volume, but there is only so much snow that fit before gravity does it's thing. Unfortunately, many countries add height limitations disregarding the NEED for such roofs, especially in short-staffed places. As a result, people's lives are exposed to unnecessary dangers, energy waste (Snow is actually decent insulation/wind barrier, removal of all snow reduces heat efficiency, plus some places actually use active exterior heating to keep icicles in check) and extra work hours.

I’m sure he was freezing but loved it so much he wanted to do it more. Only two jobs like that and I miss them everyday. There wasn’t a day I didn’t want to be a work. Satisfying like he said.

Wow you nailed it! Yes this is my workplace. And no, this is not my responsibility. The building is leased. So we can call the landlord and tell them to take care of it. But I knew what the problem was and figured I’d take a crack at it (literally) and guess what - took 90 seconds of “work” and it was fun! People don’t own what they do, they want to demand a raise to do anything outside of their normal scope of work. That’s nonsense. Man up! Thanks for commenting!

@@onesixfive dude calm down unfortunately certain things need to be paid for if it's out of their work or pay grade I'm sorry but that's how it goes I'm not going to be doing heavy lifting for someone for example if I'm doing programming from the same goes with fixing people's pipes if I'm not a plumber unless I get paid and I have the knowledge I'm doing it That's just how it is My time is precious my time is important because time is something that doesn't regenerate you don't get that back so it's better to have it spent worthwhile so if I can get a little extra money for doing something that's not thing I would do and I know how to do it then I will because that's just how it is I love my work and I own up to it but I'm not going to do it for free

How familiar it is!)) A month ago I worked in the Arctic Circle. All the workers lived in trailers. And if you do not spill one kettle of boiling water at least once every two days, then the water drain turns into one solid piece of ice (fortunately, technically it was made as a piece of hose coming out of the trailer, so it could be pulled out, gouged with a crowbar, and melt the remains)
