In this video, I show a bus monitor that I built to work with the RC2014 Z80 retrocomputer. The bus monitor uses TIL311 hexadecimal displays to display the current state of the address and data buses, and LEDs to show the state of important control signals. For more electronics projects, see my blog at www.smbaker.com/

The upper 8 bits on the address bus is for 16 bit in instructions I believe it goed like this: LD BC,0x55AA ; < 16 bits io address IN A(C) ; put B on the high 8 bits address bus, C on the lower 8 Bits. ---------------- LD A,0x55 IN A,(0xAA) is the same as above.

Scott, A great board, please will you put the capacitor and resistor values on your schematic?

I thought the TIL311 inputs we're power hungry, it was the led supply voltage that gobbled the current?

Hi, do youn have a Eagle Library for the TIL311? The actual Lib is not correct, the pads are to big.

Why are there 2 displays for the databus? 8 bits is 1 byte, shouldn't that give one HEX value?

Hi. very interesting video. Do you know any modern replacement equivalent to the TIL311?

hackaday.io/project/8270-pictil is working but not an available product... For 16-bits I designed dypled.com :-)

You should not need any modern day replacement. They are still available on eBay @ a reasonable price.

The TIL311's can be replaced with DIS1417's.

Not a bad re-design Scott but you may really want to explain that the TIL311 is not only obsolete for many, many years but if you can find them they are very expensive, so your design may not be practical other than sharing it on a youtube as an example and one I enjoyed... for old times sake.

I picked them up a couple weeks ago from an ebay seller, that sells them for $4.25 each in single quantity, with discounts for larger quantities (I purchased 16 of them at $4 each). That added up to $26 for the six displays in this board, easily making the displays more expensive than all the other components and the PCB combined. Of course, eBay supply can vary greatly, and someone coming across this video weeks, months, or years from now might not be able to source the displays for a reasonable cost, or even find them at all. I think I might stock up on some more of them for future projects. It feels like they could find a home in a (hex) calculator project...

Wow so true, but I have found an awesome device that replaces it and if many are made now that PICs are getting cheaper, it really looks like a very cool pin for pin copy. Im sure China could offer these if they find it for just a couple bucks, unless we do it with a small margin. blog.oshpark.com/2016/05/12/pictil-remake-of-the-til311-display/ I built an 1802 computer called the Cosmac 2000 by sparetimegizmos with the original 311's a few years ago and was gonna pay 10 bucks for them but a friend graciously gave me 6 for free. Now we may be able to do it cheaper with this cool pic remake because they are awesome for hex as you know. Thanks for sharing Scott.

Wow, that is a cool replacement, thanks for posting this. I'm tempted to grab a few of the pc boards and build them up, just to be able to compare to the original.

I have always loved that display for so many years!! I think I actually dream in hex as well... (haha) but I dont think Mr Guidon has them for sale yet, but he has offered the schematic and files for free, Check the link to Hackaday as well. If it can be made with red leds, it would almost be exact, even the 3 pin holes are very close and the processor is less than a buck. All cool stuff!!!
