Great tutorial. I do think you could do with a finer tip for the cleanup and I'd prefer a chisel tip for the dragging part.

I solder smd chips using the widest possible "wllr" chisel tip.Wide tips means larger heat surface that better transfers the heat to the solder and pcb and drags the solder to any desired direction.

imo you did a great job however I think if you left the flux on and didn't clean with alcohol you would of been able to unbridge the solder better, the flux helps in them cases, if you get a bridge next time try adding flux to the bridge, applying the iron slightly and they'll unbridge. no expert myself but thought that could be why you struggled to unbridge it.

Do yourself a favor, ditch that conical tip as they are good for only filling my trash bin. Use a bevel or well tip if you are going to try drag soldering. Even a chisel tip is better than that conical tip

This was very useful indeed. I've seen drag soldering before, but putting down a string of flux beforehand is a very useful tip that I would not immediately have thought of. Speaking of tips, I believe that there are special soldering iron tips for this kind of work. The ones I have seen have been sort of a round chisel tip with a small dent in them to serve as a reservoir for the solder.

The round chisel tip is called bevel or hoof. With the dent in the middle, they are sometimes called a spoon. Bevel tips are ideal for drag soldering, with or without the dent/hollow in the middle.

I'm a little late, but by the sound of it you've probably done what I'm about to do (and potentially regret trying) How bad is trying to drag solder without applying flux separately? I've been hoping I could just rely on the rosin core of the solder wire, but I'm assuming (if it even affects the first pin) by the time the tip reaches the last pins there won't be much left of that rosin core flux. Not planning on doing anything extremely tiny, just 1mm pitch (although I noticed: that **sounds** like a lot... but actually seeing the pcb kind of made me realise how tiny that already is) Or would something like soldering just a few pins (3-5) like you normally would (feeding solder wire while holding the iron to the pins and such) mitigate the flux problem?

Not really a fan of solder paste, i either put to much on and have lots of jumpers going on or to little, i much prefer to flux the pads up put a bit of solder on my iron amd drag across it. Clearing shorts i use some thin solder wick in there, sometimes its hard to clear shorts on fine legged chips so solder wick works spot on for that.

The flux isn't real Amtech as you can see on the label they have called California state 'Colifornia'. It still does a good job though for cheap RMA flux. Subscribed by the way. :-)

Colifomia instead of Colofonia (Rosin). Nothing related with the State :-)

Yes it is. Not eco-friendly but much easier to work with.

If isopropanol works on your flux, most people use that. If isopropanol doesn't work, toluene probably will but has more health and safety implications and needs to be stored in a container it can't evaporate through. Both can also dissolve certain susceptible components (IDK which).
