this actually made me so anxious. we all know what happened after this clip was taken and it was absolutely tragic. I am aware that no one died, but poor communication cause this tragic accident to happen. I really wish that someone could've at least tried to tell the staff in the shop about the valleyed car. i dont know if they would've been able to do anything about it but it may have helped. (anyone who's worked on a coaster feel free to tell me)
@denaamisdaan4 жыл бұрын
Megs I share the same opinion. But I think that when a ride is valleyed like this the staff knows they miss a car and won’t sent another car crashing into it. I think most bystanders were trusting the ride operators and safety back-ups and did not expect the ride operators were stupid enough to sent a car away.
@chonka43294 жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s what I thought but then I did some research and it turned out the other train already took off from the lift hill and went into the drop’ if that happens there is no possible way to stop the ride so they were not able to do anything however after the crash they were extremely unprofessional and took more then an hour to dispatch the ride so if they took all of the riders if faster they could have saved all of them injuries
@denaamisdaan4 жыл бұрын
I like Dankeys I’m not really understanding your story but I think you’ve got some details mixed up. The safety mechanism prevented to send the ride away, but the ride operators overruled that warning and send the train anyway. There was a long time between the first car that valleyed and the car that came crashing into it. In that time the mistakes were made. Rollercoasters have a safety mechanism and shut themselves down when a train hasn’t passed a checkpoint, the second train was thereby stopped on the lifthill. If the ride operators had looked and inspected the ride instead of ‘thinking’ it’s okay they would’ve noticed the valleyed train and all this wouldn’t have happened.

Just in case anyone is interested, the accident happened because it was a busy day at the park so the ride operators added an extra train but didn't tell the mechanics. The ride was also operating in winds that were higher than the manafacturer deemed safe. So the empty test car valleyed and the second train filled with people started the first lift hill but stopped at the top because it correctly detected the test car. However the mechanics manually overided the safety system because the ride operators hadn't told them about the extra train. The full train continued ... and crashed. The crash was therefore both the ride operators fault for not telling the mechanics about the extra train, and the mechanics fault for not visually verifying the whereabouts of ALL trains. You also have to remember the fact that because of the high winds on that day, The Smiler shouldn't have been operating AT ALL in the first place.

I see a lot of comments confused on what actually happened in the accident.....this video is showing the empty car that was sent out to test the ride, but it failed to complete the circle, as shown here. The full car was sent out and stopped on top of a hill. It stopped because the system detected that another car was on the track. The engineers who were checking out the ride overrode the system to let the full car go because they thought all the cars were accounted for and it was an error. They had plenty of time to stop the ride, they didn’t need to use ESTOP. The car the riders were in was already stopped at the top of an incline. If the operators had listened to the warning, they would have realized the empty car was still on the tracks and shut down the ride. But instead they overrode the system and allowed the ride to continue. Posting this because I see a lot of people in the comments asking why they didn’t use ESTOP or saying they didn’t have enough time to fix this.

They didn’t “not listen” to the warning,the mechanics didn’t tell the operator that they put a 5th cart on so the operator thought it was a ghost cart and it was some glitch or smth in the system so they released the full cart from the lift and it went round as Normal until it caught up to the empty one,it went through the first inversion of the batwing element whipped round the bend on the bottom of the element and slammed into the back of the empty cart.now I watched a cctv footage with sound and i was shaking from the bang bc u could hear it from the top of x-sector and it crashed at the bottom of the area.now if u don’t like hearing about awful things that have happened to ppl don’t read this part, as they collided into the back of the other cart, on every row on the cart they have a metal bar fence thingy and bc coaster carts aren’t designed to do something like what happened on that day,the bar in front of the riders on the front row got crushed and grinded up and pushed back into the riders and crushed their knees and the bar was literally touching the seat,joe was one of the riders on the front and his finger was hanging off and he said he could literally bite it off and he was on the edge seat next to the fence surrounding the ride so he could see everyone standing there filming it so he was screaming to the “put your f*****ing phone down and help”and”stop this f****ing ride” he was on a date witth a girl called Leah who was next to another couple called vicky and Daniel,vicky and Leah were in the middle of the front so they got the worsed of it so they had to get their legs amputated.and that’s all I’m getting to

It’s honestly stupid how the staff thought that a ‘ghost train’ triggered the safety mechanism and decided to override it, not even clearing the tracks first. That’s a 5 million dollar mistake, also cost 2 young girls their legs. They also should of put water dummies in the empty cart to build momentum, but they didn’t, causing volleyed coasters. Also, they were not meant to run the ride when wind speeds bypassed 34mph. There were gusts of up to 46mph. Poor communication between the two teams (the team who sent out the test cart never told the other team) and those seemingly harmless mistakes were downright stupid. There was only meant to be 4 carts, not 5. The worst thing is when the crash happened, all they could hear was maniacal laughter.

@stuartolding48523 жыл бұрын
Anyway this is uhm scary. I've never personally been on the smiler. But if I did everything correctly. The maintenance sent out a 5th cart due to the amount of people in the park. Yet the ride shouldn't have been running because it only runs at a certain wins speed and if it's over that it should not operate. The fifth train was not filled with water dummies. So it didnt make the loop and valley. The next train went off about 10 minutes later. But maintenance had not been informed about this "5th train" so the cart stopped at the peak of the lift hill. Maintenance then override the safety mechanism stopping trains going into the same block unaware of a 5th train valleyed. The train went off and smashed into the back of the valleyed cart. This was a horrible accident that I hope will never happen on the smiler or any other coaster. (Edit. I hope my research is correct this took like 5 minutes to write. I hope its correct)

can youtube stop reminding my intrusive-thought-riddled ass that this crash happened when im going to a theme park in a few weeks

For anyone who is not fully sure of what happened: So, I’m pretty sure there was a cart with a red flashing light on (warning sign) so they took it off the track. But they needed to make their money so they added a fifth cart onto the ride. They did a quick tester and then they saw that the tester cart was on the track as it got stuck as they let the next group go, and that group got stuck at the top of the ride,so they called the engineers who weren’t aware of the fifth cart stuck on the track, so they thought everything was fine, so they made the group of people carry on their ride. This is when the tragic crash happens. They go down the part where the fifth cart was stuck and just like that, in 2 seconds everyone with broken fingers, scars, people wishing they never went on the smiler. I pray for them today and hope they are okay. Hope this helped!

Bits of this is accurate however not all of it. They were already running 4 trains but the ride had closed for technical difficulties, during that time the operators decided to add a 5th train
@thorneisdrawn2 жыл бұрын
honestly, it's surprising how people react to it before the actual incident, as it seems people are laughing at the ride operator being a dingus, and are expecting them to notice the train and take the coaster out of service

Because it was impossible to guess that people would get seriously injured from this test train valleying? Wouldn't you assume that everything was under control and that the ride operator would remove the train

This ride had suffered multiple rollbacks prior to the crash. What evidence is there that this is the one preceding the infamous accident?
@nomi77434 жыл бұрын
wdym rollbacks??? isnt that for launch coasters???
@reecehaw22434 жыл бұрын
Megs all rollercoaster can experience roll backs the main reason being high winds however newer models of rollercoasters take this into consideration and make layouts so they are less likely to happen
@ST6-Music4 жыл бұрын
it's not the day of the crash. The ride requires water/sand filled dummies to give the empty car enough speed to make that certain part of track on a windy day, otherwise it can get stuck. When the ride gets stuck it automatically stops the entire ride and the only people who can start it is mechanics after a inspection of the track for any stalled cars is complete. The reason the crash happened was due to a communication fault and a lazy mechanic who didnt check for stalled cars.

You can actually see some rus on the track. Particularly on the Cobra-Roll. Therefore this can't be 2013 since the track was essentially rust-free that year. Thusly it means that must be 2015

Oh wait it does do that back and fourth thing at least that’s what I think I’m actually not sure and I can’t assume that it’s true
@joshuahicks45744 жыл бұрын
It's not normal for it to go back and forth
@TheCycloneHunter3 жыл бұрын
When a train valleys, it doesn’t have enough momentum to make it through the element. The momentum switches back and forth causing the train to rock back and forth. Valleying can be caused by disproportionate elements, high winds, a problem with the wheel assembly, not enough weight on the train, ect.

ST6 it was actually because the lady operator thought that there was a ‘ghost train’ if you know what that means (you will if you’re an enthusiast)

@@ST6-Music This is the third comment I've seen you spreading false information on. At the time, The Smiler's computer wasn't designed to detect a stalled train. And the only thing that stopped the ride was the block-safety-system. But I'm pretty sure you don't even know what that is
@ST6-Music3 жыл бұрын
@@bulletnotloaded3586 the computer was always designed to detect stalled cars. The reason the crash happend was because a worker sent another car out to handle the long lines and didnt tell the mechanic who was working on the ride at the time. The mechanic then counted the amount of cars he though was on the ride and overrided the safety system causing the crash.
