A smiling face made from living human skin could one day be attached to a humanoid robot, allowing machines to emote and communicate in a more life-like way, say researchers. Its wrinkles could also prove useful for the cosmetics industry.

As a scientist and as a roboticist, this feels like the kind of project a grad student would make up as a "Wouldn't it be horrifying if this existed" and then a bunch of his mentors and peers laughed about, but then they decided to throw actual money and development towards.

For medical applications it is good. But far cheaper to grow human babies in incubators with Neuro Link trans plants to make cheap slave labor don't you think. You could program those humans to be anything you want, and they take care of themselves for the most part. just give them enough credits and hope and they will do anything for you.

Oh, brilliant! Because nothing says "cutting-edge technology" quite like a robot wearing a fleshy skin mask that looks like it just escaped from a low-budget horror flick. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be greeted by a clammy, blinking synthetic face every morning? Just imagine the joy of explaining to your kids that, no, it's not a monster under the bed-it’s just Dad’s new colleague. Truly, the future we all dreamed of! Bravo, scientists. Just bravo. Won't this thing require a steady supply of red blood cells (or some substitute source of nutrients) in order to last more than a few hours? Also, does the skin have nerve cells incorporated? Now _that_ would be a huge deal if someone could figure out how to sustainably maintain a robot with human skin resolution sense of touch.

And welcome to the heart of the uncanny valley.. Many years ago I did a workup on building robotic interface bodies for Strong AI. I came to the conclusion that by far the best solution was using living flesh and muscles. The only real 'insurmountable' problem with it was the considerable 'ick' factor. It would almost have been literally building Frankenstein's monster after all..
