From my experience with fig trees, figs get better every year and they continue improving in flavor qualiy until the tree is like 15 years old. Probably the first years your smith didn´t taste so well... For that reason you can't really judge a fig until the tree is fully grown. Specially when the weather is sunny and dry, the figs are incredible. That´s why they work so well in the Mediterranean.

Agree! Even out here in SoCal where we are lucky to pretty much be able to grow any of the top varieties, Smith consistently is one of the best. Caprified or un-caprified. A must have.

Thanks to your recommendations I have one of these growing in ground this year. It is really taking off now. Should get a dozen figs or so. It sees full sun from sunrise until sunset. The only two other trees I put into the ground were Italian 258 and Peters Honey. My other 25 trees are in large containers on drip but deeply mulched so I rarely water

I think the flavor of smith resembles star apple, not the texture but the flavor. 🤤

Is it possible to buy this fig in Europe? I live in the Netherlands and have never seen Smith at any of the nursery's.

That's the problem. There's 3 figs commonly found in the US that are incredible and almost impossible to find anywhere else. Smith, black Celeste, hative d'argenteuil.

Smith is available in Europe. I have it. Best bet is to get on the European Figs Facebook page, plenty of sellers there.
