I use to be a hot shot transporter and 5 year's ago they had a engine that went bad in the middle of a huge wildfire and I got the job to transport it from Carson City, NV to Redding CA and I got a police escort from pick up to drop off. After that I was so proud to be able to help them with what I could and everyone there was the coolest people I have ever met in my life.

Have you read the book Smoke Jumper, by Jason Ramos? I couldn't put it down, it is a nail biting page turner. I also recommend The Perfect Storm, by Sebastain Junger (very different than the Hollywood movie.)

@@mariefc8504 thanks it was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I'm glad I got to do it. My Cousin was supposed to come ride with me and he decided he didn't want to go and he was so mad that he didn't go with me. Smoke Jumpers are a completely different from everyone else in the world.

In order to be a type 2 Wildland Firefighter here in Alaska u must first pass a ‘Strenuous’ 3 mile hike with 45lbs “piss bags” on ur back within 45 minutes. It’s not for everybody, but my grandpa could pass it.

WH ROBY, the Type 2 pack test is the US federal minimum standard to fight wildland fire in the American west, it’s carrying 45 pounds of gear on your back in a mile in less than 45 minutes. Type 1 is a step above like hotshots and smokejumpers. Basically he’s saying that people disliked this because they couldn’t even do the bare minimum to do this job. Thats the joke. Sorry to explain it, because that kills the punchline-but thats what it means.

Smokejumpers are the parachuting pioneers- they were jumping before the military was. In fact the Army Airborne School was based off of the smokejumpers jumping TTP and they are know for being recruited by the CIA for their parachuting prowess. That being said, I think the USFS should ask the smokies what they think before they just switch their parachutes!

@joeallen2286
@joeallen2286 6 жыл бұрын
Aaron Wallis way cheaper to operate and maintain fixed wing. Less things to go wrong and would require boots already on the ground unless it was a known LZ. if it's unknown then you need a crew on the ground to guide the heli in (pathfinders.) it gets complex with helicopters. Trust me (5 years airborne infantry)

Good point but with heli, there's a ton of inherent risk, such as tree branches you overlook etc.

I'd imagine helos are more susceptible to the heat pockets and turbulence associated with wildfires, and that can only get worse the closer they get to ground level.
@joshr7781
@joshr7781 6 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. The LZ more than likely hasn't been cleared of hazards, you also need to look at how much they can carry, and other things can go wrong.

The whole world is set up to show consequences for doing wrong. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. We must be willing to turn from sin to receive Jesus forgiveness , and to know and live out his teachings. He who does the will of God abides for eternity 1 John 2:17 NKJV
