Part I covers the discovery of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin and the gradual transition away from good old black powder to so-called smokeless powders.

When I burned black powder as a kid I was totally unimpressed with the results. I guess the major insight with both black powder and smokeless powder is understanding how much gas is produced in a short time when confined in a shell.

Nq is also used in some powders but most modern powder is mostly Nc and Ng with some graphite powder or carbon black. That is why double and triple base smokeless powder is shock sensitive ( if you pour some out on a anvil and hit it with a hammer it can go bang). In my reloading room i am fairly sure i only have one tripple base powder and the rest are all single and double base.

I'd smartened up the logo and so forth for Patreon and because of KZfaq's rather inconsistent treatment of shooting content, was initially thinking of having these videos on Patreon alone. Then I changed my mind and decided to do both. In other words I was pre-empting a problem that hadn't yet arisen.
