Thank you for getting back to me. I really do appreciate it. On the bar itself the flat bit broke. I’m having it welded back together but I didn’t know if the flat bit was closest to the bar will come out or it was on the opposite side, I’m sorry about the wording, but I’m not quite sure how to explain it, thank you again, Gary

I am really enjoyed this as this is the size and type of engines we work on and as such the information you are providing is like gold. It is interesting that the piston looked clean but the valves not, it suggests someone might have had it apart recently, especially with that part upside down. It does make you wonder what else they did, I think for the sake of a gasket, I would be tempted to take the side off to check the rod, crank, etc. I am looking forward to part 2

Those old K series were just about bullet proof. I haven't had one on the bench for several years. Waiting on #2.

I think someone had rebuilt that motor, and you are finding their mistakes. What about checking for balance gears? You could remove the cam cover and take a look. I just rebuilt my K301 (it had a standard Mahle piston) and left out the old style balance gears that were inside, and it seems to run smooth, even at idle. The piston had little wear, and I reused it, but at some point the motor was underwater (I think Hurricane Irene) and the rings corroded, so new rings were used.

Definitely chucking the grenade gears. Have to dial bore the cylinder to see where it’s at. The crank was at -0.003 in the thrust direction so it’s out being ground, I have a minus 0.010 rod ready to go

Not all K321 blocks had the number cast in, a lot of K301's did

A K321 uses a Carter Model N Carb, size 30(mm bore). The aftermarket clones seem to work fine, just make sure you buy one with the correct choke linkage
