I like that he communicates with his mom during the game. It's implied that while he's fighting with a crowd of crazy people and killing other dragons, his mother is sitting somewhere nearby, too busy to keep an eye on him, and only occasionally is like, "Time for dinner!!"

So: Smolder ages a lot slower than humans. Marinos was a kid and now is a old man, while Smolder is still a kid. Smolder is an "imperial dragon". Smolder's mother could be only a voice\spirit. He has no interaction with champions, probably he never left Camavor.

She breathes fire, it's his ult so definitely not just a voice/spirit. He seems to know the Dragons (Sol and Shyvana), either it being through his mom telling him, him and his mom roaming around Runeterra or even him by himself looking for adventures to "prove himself"!

Ah, my mistake. Went back to check and it's actually mentioned in Nilah's color story. Viper was the mother of all Camavoran dragons. And Nilah killed her, so she just offed Smolder's grandma.
