I love learning that such a thing as finger tapping exists and that Glenn Gould was its ambassador. Quite fascinating!

Gould said it took him 32 hours to tap out the entire Goldberg Variations when he was learning them. I find this so tedious. But truly, if it worked for Gould, I will try anything.

Oh my gosh, that is so fascinating! Thanks for sharing! I had no idea. And yes, I have done it for so many pieces in it truly does work.

Thanks for this - I'm headed to the piano now. Ive always admired Glenn Gould's crisp, articulate sound. It can really make a passage shine. Im always disappointed with how my Bach sounds but I bet this will help 👍🏽.

You’re welcome! He does have a crisp sound!! I agree :) this will definitely help! Also practicing in rhythms if you haven’t done that. Lmk if you need a link explaining if you don’t know what rhythms are.

I am not sure if this is a technique I would ever adopt. Sorry...) I practice and learned not to force-round fingers, but leave them naturally rounded, and not the wrist is rotating, but the forearm even though in a subtle way. Glenn Gould, an exceptional guy, often played in a way that looks unhealthy to me, and he had problems later on with strong pain. Also his chair !!! was unhealthy. He used his childhoid chair everywhere. I think, any forcing whatsoever, and especially finger lifting, is no good for piano students. But everyone should find out and try ...We are all not Glenn Gould. My admiration to him nevertheless.

No apologies necessary! The technique should only be used sparingly for sure… Definitely not a way to play constantly :-) it is particularly helpful for Bach, I have found, but I have probably only used it four or five times in the last 10 years.

@RolandHuettmann: I totally agree with you. It creates tension. Glad I wasn’t the only one. Gould had such severe dystonia that when he recorded the Goldberg variations it had to keep being spliced. His arms got so tired, he couldn’t play more than 2-3 bars at a time…. The chair is a major culprit….!
