Im just getting back into the hobby after a long hiatus and watching as many videos as I can for research/tips and found this most instructive. Im very impressed by the way you put the superstructure together, it looks very tricky. My first model will be the Varyag as I love the old warships and after watching this video I think the Szent Istvan will be on my wish list as it is a very nice looking ship, thank you for posting and I shall subscibe and enjoy watching more of your work.

Peter awesome build and video as always. I really liked the green hull and how you weathered it. Always a superb job on those tricky and pesky PE parts. How are you doing? Well I sincerely hope. Did you get your vaccination yet? I'm still working on the Hasegawa Hikawa Maru. Its a fun kit and a beautiful ship. Have a great week and stay safe my friend. As always my very best to you, your family and friends. God bless. 👍👍🇦🇹🤝🇺🇸

Szent Istvan and Viribus Unitis are the same dreadnought battleship class built for Austro-Hungarian empire. 4 ships belonged to the same class: Tegetthoff, Viribus Unitis, Szent Istvan and Prinz Eugen. Those were only Austro-Hungarin dreadnoughts. That's why they looked similar to you while you built them. BTW, great job!!!
@funinscale28923 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the info. I wasn't just aware how much difference or similarity between the two ships was there in this class, but it seems the most predominant feature on st istvan that is not present in VU is the platform around the funnels
@berlin128g2 жыл бұрын
@@funinscale2892 The diffenece were relatevly minor but Szent István had only two shafts becuse had better steam engines, different conning tower, and it didn't recived the torpedo protection net holders.

Szent István (St. Stephen) was the first Hungarian Christian king, the founder of the Hungarian kingdom. Kaiser Franz Josef personally decided to name the ship after the first Hungarian king. Szent István set sail for her only combat deployment on the evening of June 9, 1918, when together with her sister ships and most of the fleet, they planned to carry out a raid on the Otranto sea lock on the 11th. Two torpedo-equipped motor boats (MAS) of the Royal Italian Navy (Regia Marina) detected near Premuda at dawn on June 10 the convoy in which the Szent István and the Tegetthoff sailed towards the assembly point. The MASs, which were just returning from their night mission off the Dalmatian coast, managed to sneak in unnoticed among the escort ships and fire their torpedoes at the battleships, two of which MAS 15's torpedoes hit the Szent István at the height of the boiler rooms - in a critical place from the point of view of torpedo protection. The battleship fought for nearly three hours with the water seeping into its body, which rendered more and more boilers unusable, and because of which the pumps could no longer operate. Finally, after the bulkheads between the boiler rooms were breached, the ship capsized and sank. 89 people lost their lives in the tragedy, mainly those who worked to prevent water intrusion inside the ship. The Szent István was the only battleship in the First World War whose loss was recorded on video. The remains of the battleship, also considered the largest Hungarian-built ship, were found in 1974 at a depth of 60-70 meters. The Croatian Ministry of Culture has declared the shipwreck a war grave, and divers can only dive with a permit. (Wikipedia)

Good work! Dose anybody know how the rigging on the masts looked like? I'm currently working on the same kit and I originally intended to use the 3d model of Viribus Unitis from World of Warships as reference but some of it's parts are different. If anybody knows any good references please let me know.

What green did you use for the hull? Also was the photo etch about the same as her sister ship you built a little while ago?
@funinscale28923 жыл бұрын
Hi Glen! I used Nato Green from Tamiya as a base colour, then i have added some Flat Earth and Sky Grey to the paint for the lighter colour around the waterline and the bottom of the hull - to be honest, i dont know which paint is required exactly, but it looks fitting in my opinion. The photoetch parts are the exact same as in Viribus Unitis, as far as i remember, with an exception being the railing above the platform around the funnels, but i think it was already included in VU, but just not used. It is a rich photoetch set in my opinion
@glenchapman38993 жыл бұрын
@@funinscale2892 Thanks, every green I have tried, or mixed myself ended up being to bright, ends up making the ships look more like carnival rides than weapons of war lol

Servus, mein Lieber!
@funinscale28923 жыл бұрын

I was under the impression that unlike her 3 "Austrian" sisters, Szent Istvan was not equipped with torpedo nets and booms.
@funinscale28923 жыл бұрын
Hi Jean-Paul, i just looked at some photos of her, and you are absolutely right, there are never torpedo nets or poles attached on the side of the ship! I just followed instructions there without too much bothering checking references. So it seems Trumpeter would have had to have made another hull and they probably wanted to recycle this one. Or one had to fill all the holes and risk sanding detail away
@jpbweb20233 жыл бұрын
@@funinscale2892 I do not think it is the case. Szent Istvan had a different propulsion system that her 3 sisters, with only 2 propellers and shafts, which the kit portrays accurately. So the hull is specific to that ship (unless the kit of Viribus Unitis would be wrong and have a hull with only 2 shafts instead of the 4 it shoudl have). The rest of the kit also seems to portray quite accurately Szent istvan as built. Sad that Trumpeter does not show more care than that, really.

"The kit itself seems to be very similar to Viribus Unitis which I have built some months ago" Duh... Both ships were Tegetthoff class dreadnoughts. They are all the same apart from some minor details, I'd say they are 95% identical. The Tegetthoff class had four ships: SMS Tegetthoff, SMS Prinz Eugen, SMS Viribus Unitis and SMS Szent István. So if you get a kit of each, it's like getting 4 kits of just one of them. The biggest difference will be the name tag. It's like saying that Bismarck and Tirpitz look similar. :D
@funinscale28923 жыл бұрын
I know, it was a reference to the kit design. sometimes, they change parts, eg make a two part hull, or one part hull, in this case it is the same base kit with minor changes. The ships in reality, it is obvious that they are of the same class and therefore similar
