Haven’t researched the p20 that much. The M300 mk2 has worked out pretty well for me for running my 789 and CTH, except for one big problem. Every now and then the sound stops despite the unit being on. It gets resolved by switching sources or power cycling but I can’t get it to stop. It’s not clear to me if its an issue with the M300 or if it’s something with my power source. I currently have it connected to an outlet shared with my desktop and mini fridge. I’ve noticed the sound tends to turn off when the fridge starts pumping... Weird stuff. Until I figure what is up with it Im hesitant to recommend it despite the great feature set for the price.

That vibrating thing is something I noticed with most metal devices (including phones and tablets) when they are on charge.

The vibrating thing is actually electricity running through you, typically indicating a badly grounded chassis. Had the same with my laptop, changed to a grounded cable, fixed.

So... Apparently SMSL has a new revision of M300 at the same $249, with a dedicated power brick, a IR remote, and a Bluetooth 5.0. I just bought mine off on Amazon and I didn't expected all these added features for the same price. so.... SU-8 with a newer chip in a smaller box now? I'll keep it. WTH It even comes with all the cables for inputs(usb, coax, optical).

This vibrating is your power. It’s a unclean power supply. You can feel that on many laptops too. And other things.

It's a ground loop issue. If you un-ground yourself (lift your feet off the floor) the sensation will cease in most cases.

The SU-8 also has 2 DAC chips instead of just one on the M300. Not that it necessarily matters because the design of a DAC is much more important than the chips they use. I am no expert, but I do think the SU-8 is better designed, and the remote and the filter settings are great features.

The SMSL M300 is a newer and different DAC compared to the SU-8 and should be reviewed accordingly. I believe a fair audition would involve listening to both through decent loudspeakers with a variety of music. No such luck here!

to add insurance over signal qualities, go off-grid, with battery power, and you can do this only with equipment that are either powered via USB of 24V DC. The AD18 is even more dynapic when used off-grid. (even tho there is absolutely no hum detectable using the power brick)

The ESS chip used in the SU-8 has an integrated digital volume control. I don't believe AKM4497 has that function. Hence, M300 is a pure DAC, while SU-8 functions as a DAC-pre combo. For what's worth, the unit price of AKM4497 is more expensive than that of ES9038Q2M. But, the SU-8 uses two DAC chips. Depends on what you look for.

On a sidenote. The current version (II) comes with an AC adapter and remote and BT. The SU-8 doesnt have Bluetooth. and the AK4497. AK4493 is far cheaper, and some say it sounds not as good as the 4497.

so i bought the balanced tube amp, in red, you raved about, love it, was able to get the smsl m300 in red, thought the smsl su8 had a few more options, but form factor, red red, im happy with my choice, can change settings at will from air mouse, either way, you cant go wrong

Man, I really wanted to like this. It doesn't have a power cable requirement (bonus!) it looks cooler, and it has a newer chipset. But what it doesn't have is TWO chipsets, a remote control, and a usb connection type that doesn't suck. Micro-B? Come on bros! This is 2019. If not using usb B, you should use usb c.

My suspicion is that "SMSL" is actually multiple designers and manufacturers. This unit will have a niche for people who prefer AKM DAC chips (I personally don't care about this). The blue one is kind of cool. I would like to see a side by side amp to match it. Curious to see how it measures.

@@V1ralB1ack I have a Gustard dac w/dual ES9028pro chips. Sounds really good. I sold my Gungnir Multibit after a week with my Gustard. I've always liked ES clarity and detail. Never tried an AKM dac, but am curious about this new M300.

I could benefit that as well. Here's the thing though...the main benefit of XLR over RCA is the shielding is better. It's likely that with such a short run, there is no difference between using RCA's and XLR's. Just a guess. I personally trust the connection and longevity of XLR's over RCA's. I'll probably just use a 2 foot xlr cable, as it would be more convenient for my desk setup to have the dac on the right side of the desk, and the amp on the left.

So there's the M300 which has been out for over a year and then they just come out with the M200 not to long ago and from what I can see it's a little better than the M300, go figure. I'm thinking of getting the M200 to go with the SP200 because they are literally made for each other. Then the Aune X8 review comes out and I have no clue what to do now.

by the way the balanced tube amp sounded good on planar hifimans, unbalanced, balanced, not so much, the hd350 hifimans i hated, but addiction, sounds great tubed balanced, but i was able to convince my wife i needed he600, just got them, literly 10 mins ago was delivered, soooo, fun weekend, ya, what im thinking

Maybe it's a 2nd iteration - called SMSL M300 MKII but it was 1st sold on March 6th '19? There's 2 Balanced XLR, 2 RCA an optical/coaxial, USB B (mini?) & 5v power inlet for a power brick.

I dont even understand why a DAC needs a remote. This is starting to get stupid. This is very minimal I like it that way, the remote goes to the Amplifier. How many remotes do you want laying around?

@@MikeLeitner insulated cannot technically give you this feeling. It's a ground loop issue, some power adapters just leak voltage as far as I understand.

Not sure why they'd indicate something more than 44.1/16 is better, when there is a real chance it's just wasting space on overly bloated sound files. Also, I want a big beefy volume knob, and possibly a remote, but at least a proper volume knob. Also, what, micro-USB now? When there is USB-C that can move a lot more power and is better in all ways? Fail.

I've had them for a few years at this point and I'd definitely recommend them. They are a fairly airy sound and more treble-oriented so if you're into that for sure. They really are great headphones... I did recently pick up the 58x which I'm in love with but if I want more treble I always grab the SHPs. They have nice mids and a bit of a bass-rolloff. You won't be upset with them that much I can promise. Really a great sound for the price

What about the SMSL SA300? It looks as though it's supposed to be the modern replacement for the SMSL AD18 as I think it has the same IO options but with BT5.0 and some snazzy "Infineon" chip inside. Has anyone tried this yet?

When I first saw the m300 announcement I was confused as to why it exists when comparing to the su-8. Nothing has changed, why is it so expensive, where is the remote, are they planning on making a weird shaped amp (for speakers of headphones), of the same shape???? WhAt Is GoInG On?

It's just using the previous latest chip. The ak4497. Now the the ak4499 is scheduled to be released soon.

@@joylessdancer4554 It's unreleased but the akm ak4499 will be released soon. So for the time being at least in some parts of the world the ak4497 is the flagship. I just thought I'd give a heads up that a newer model is coming soon.

Do you really need balanced i/o for a desktop system. Can anyone really perceive a difference in a desktop over RCA's. I doubt it.

The difference is imperceptible at best - often the RCAs measure better than balanced...the benefit lies in ground loop isolation through the system.

Come on Z, you started obsessing about form factor because it reminded you of a loaf of bread or a stick of gourmet butter. Basically, you couldn't hear a difference from the new chipset? People the JDS el dac wasn't actually vibrating, it has a very fine texture and when you rub your finger across it goes in between the lines of your finger print and it feels like vibrating. He explained it in the video that he just cleaned it for the first time and can feel that texture. It is not dirty power or needing to be grounded it is not the same thing as a laptop which actually has a vibration because of the fans inside.

@@johnyang799 approximately 6:35 to 6:58 he literally describes what's happening and notice at that point the El Dac is powered down like at the end of the video when he does it again and said the magic is gone, it is the difference in how he is moving his hand on the surface and the pressure he is pushing down with.

To each their own. If i had to choose i would probably still go with the M300, better chip AKM4497 versus the old (and potentially inferior) ESS in the SU-8, better form factor, better screen and no power brick (i don't know if it's a positive or negative tho, if anyones want to share their opinion on this feel free). Also more color options, Black, Blue AND RED. You can match it with the Loxjie P20 Red, and for less than 3 FIDDY you get full balanced + tube, not bad. I'm still waiting for the measurement though.

The m300 is pretty but the thing is I need one for my living room and a dac with a remote is pretty handy becuase I can programme my Logitech harmony to turn it of and on. On another note the m300 only gets power from usb I could use my htpc for that but let's say I would want to use it with let's say a cd player. I need to turn the pc on. It does have a better chip but there will be better chips in the future to and in terms of which would sound better you could pick one side or the other. M300 has better chip. Su8 wall power and a toroidal transformer for the power so. I'm still thinking about which one to get but the su8 is cheaper in the Netherlands. Also the m300 is pretty difficult to get. And the su8 has a remote so yea. Only reason why I would pick the m300 is becuase it might sound better but again. I don't know that for a fact.

It vibrates the same way a violín string does when the arc rubs it, its caused by the superficial rugosity, very comonn on brushed aluminium surfaces. Ur literally fingering it until it vibrates. Now, is that an atom DAC ?????? Zeos WTFF, you tell me right f now what the hell is that knobless jds atom like black vibrating box.
